    Often, ld wives' tales take the frm f warnings and are a way t prevent pr behavir in children. Fr example, "Eating candy befre bedtime brings yu bad dreams" is a cmmn ld wives' tale that was prbably thught up t stp children frm eating t many unhealthy snacks. Similarly, "If yu've been lying, yur nse will be lnger" is a trick trying t get naughty children t tell the truth.
    Other ld wives' tales want t give advice abut hw t keep away frm illnesses. "If yu g utside with wet hair, yu'll catch a cld" is an ld wives' tale that's still cmmnly heard tday. Hwever, clds are nt caused by cld weather r wet hair. Instead, they are caused by viruses (病毒).
    "Feed a cld, starve a fever" means that yu shuld eat plenty f fd when yu have a cld, but nt eat when yu have a fever. This piece prbably cmes frm the fact that peple with a fever usually lse their appetite (胃口) anyway. Medical science has fund that the bdy stps eating much when yu have a fever because little fd makes yur immune system (免疫系统) fight bacterial infectins (细菌感染), while eating a little mre makes yur immune system fight against viruses, like clds.

Hwever, a study by scientists at University Cllege Lndn has challenged this idea. Accrding t an article, scientists are beginning t think that ur IQ is a changing scre.
