    Searching the OED
Hw t use the quick search
The quick search bar can be fund n the OED (Oxfrd English Dictinary) hmepage and at the tp f every entry page, and finds main dictinary
entries, such as alphabet, break, xylphne. It als finds phrases and cmpunds listed within main entries, such as t lk up r alphabet bk, and
different frms f spellings such as dictinaries.
    Wildcard searches
A wildcard is a symbl which stands fr any character. The questin mark? represents the ccurrence f any ne single character, and the asterisk*
represents the ccurrence f any number f characters (r n character at all). Wildeards are useful if yu d nt knw hw t spell a wrd, r if yu
want t find several terms beginning with the same rt.
Hw t use the advanced search
An advanced search is a full search f the entire dictinary text which is fr readers wh have lgged in r subscribed t the dictinary. Advanced
search can be especially useful fr very specific searches. Yu can use the search area functinality t search by each sectin f an entry. Yu can als use
filters t narrw yur search t match certain criteria.
    Brwsing by categries
Categries allw yu t explre the dictinary thrugh grupings f wrds in, fr instance. a subject r frm a particular rigin. If yu want t find
all the Caribbean brrwings in English, r find the first wrd related t friend t enter the dictinary, this is the functin fr yu.
Further explre yur search by using the ptins that appear n the right-hand side f the results page.

I started playing the pian when I was arund fur years ld—that was 15 years ag!—and since then, the lngest I haven’t tuched pian keys
was prbably tw mnths. This was an enrmus amunt f devtin t smething that I wasn’t even planning t make mney ff f—s there must
have been smething wrth hlding n t, right?
The easy guess is that I was always s purely in lve with music and pian that I culdn’t bear t let them g. Hwever, it’s a bit mre cmplicated
than that. I struggled a lt with pian. I felt pressure t imprve, innvate, and be the best in rder t prve smething t thers. The seed f my musical
interest was grwn with cmpetitin and dubt.
It’s difficult t learn t lve smething that yu didn’t chse in the first place. But smehw, smetime, lve grew. And by high schl, it was
strng enugh that I fund the strength t hld n tighter, dig further, and find smething f my wn t grw. In a way, I had t start ver.
And s, I tk a pause. I switched teachers, and gt incredibly lucky with ne wh encuraged me and helped me tunnel int what I lved, nt what
I was tld I shuld learn. Anything I had was gd enugh t be lved.
This summer, I started learning the guitar. I deliberately wanted t learn n my wn—this was just fr me, t frm a new relatinship t music. Even
thugh my guitar skills are miles lwer than my pian skills, I feel I can express myself even mre whlly thrugh strings than keys. There’s just
smething abut ding it all fr myself that has helped me heal the damages t my relatinship t music.
The lve and hate I’ve had fr the pian were bth planted and grwn. If yu t have learned t hate smething yu nce lved—r smething
yu never chse—remember that with dedicatin, it can be uprted, and lve can make a hme in its place. There is always time. There is always rm.

Mst air cnditiners and fridges rely n cntracting and expanding a liquid t either absrb r release large quantities f heat. While these systems
are relatively cheap and simple t prduce, they aren’t very efficient and require lts f energy. Besides, many f the clants used are envirnmentally
    harmful.
Nw, Emmanuel Defay at the Luxemburg Institute f Science and Technlgy and his clleagues have develped a clant-free refrigeratin device
made frm the metals lead, scandium (钪) and tantalum (钼). It can reach maximum efficiencies f mre than 60%, almst duble that f typical single-
rm air cnditining units. The technlgy is based n a principle called electrcalric cling, in which an electric field applied acrss a material
changes the directin f electric charges, causing a temprary increase in temperature and a succeeding decrease when the electric field is remved.
T make their cling system, Defay and his clleagues piled up eight strips f the material knwn as lead scandium tantalate, which is electrcalric,
n tp f ne anther and dipped them in a heat-carrying liquid, silicne il. When an electric field is switched n and the strips heat up, the liquid
mves t the right, and when it cls dwn, it mves t the left, creating permanent regins f ht and cld f abut 20℃difference. These regins can
be used as ht and cld reservirs frm which the il can be circulated thrugh pipes t cl r heat rms r bjects as desired.
“Althugh the efficiency f the device is theretically 67%, the efficiency f the current design is arund 12%. This culd be imprved if a better
cnductr f heat than the lead scandium tantalate were fund,” said Defay.
“A highest perfrmance has been achieved by cmbining knwn elements,” said NeilMathur at the University f Cambridge. Hwever, he added,
the team nly lked at the cling pwer f the pile f metal strips themselves, while it wuld be interesting t see hw the entire device perfrms
    tgether.
【小题1】What des the authr think f the system f traditinal air cnditiners?
    A.Efficient.
    B.Expensive.
    C.Highly energy-cnsuming.
    D.Envirnmentally-friendly.
【小题2】What is the third paragraph mainly abut?
A.The aim f Defay and his clleagues.

B.The material f the new cling system.
D.The wrking principle f the new cling system.
【小题3】What matters in the current efficiency f the device researched by Defay’s team?
    A.The extensive experiments.
    B.The prper equipment.
    C.The ideal temperature.
    D.The apprpriate materials.
【小题4】What’s the authr likely t talk abut next?

Mthers wh eat apples in early pregnancy culd be prtecting the brain health f their children and grandchildren. The discvery is part f a
prject that fund a mther’s diet can affect nt just her child’s brain but als thse f her grandchildren. Published in Nature Cell Bilgy, the study

fund that certain fds culd help prtect against the deteriratin (退化) f brain functin. Mre specifically, the study used rundwrms as the
genetic mdel because many f their genes are als fund cnserved in humans, allwing insights int human cells.
The researchers fund that a mlecule (分子) present in apples helped reduce the breakdwn f cmmunicatin cables needed fr the brain t wrk
prperly. Senir authr Prfessr Rger Pcck and his team investigated nerve cells in the brain that cnnect and cmmunicate with each ther
thrugh abut 850, 000 kilmeters f cables called axns. Prfessr Pcck explained that a breakdwn that caused the axns t becme weak led t
brain dysfunctin. He said his team used a genetic mdel with fragile (脆弱的) axns that break as animals age.
“We asked whether natural prducts fund in the diet can stabilize these axns and prevent breakage,” he said. “We identified a mlecule fund
in apples(urslic acid) that reduces axn fragility. Hw? We fund that urslic acid causes a gene t turn n that and makes a specific type f fat. This
particular fat als prevented axn fragility as animals age.”
Prfessr Pcck said this type f fat, knwn as a sphinglipid, had t travel frm the mther’s intestine, where fd is digested, t eggs in the
uterus fr it t prtect axns in the next generatin. “This is the first time that a fat has been shwn t be inherited,” he said. “Further, feeding the
mther the sphinglipid prtects the axns f tw subsequent generatins. This means a mther’s diet can affect nt just their ffspring’s brain but
ptentially subsequent generatins.” He said while the results were prmising, they still need t be cnfirmed in humans.
【小题1】What is the finding f the study?
    A.Rundwrms help understand human cells.
