一、阅读理解
Lng befre I culd read n my wn, my mther ften read t me frm the bk Blueberries fr Sal by Rbert McClskey. My mther’s vice
changed my wrld. And many years after that, the read alud made me a reader.
All these years later, I was in a classrm reading alud a picture bk t a small by wh was trubled by pverty and lneliness. In that mment,
in the jy f the read alud, this by had an idea that started smething big. He said. “Mrs Allyn, let’s make sure everyne knws hw gd this feels.
Let’s have a hliday fr the read alud.”
That led t my creatin f Wrld Read Alud Day six years ag t hnr this yung by’s wish fr everyne t be able t have a read alud every
day. Since then, Wrld Read Alud Day has becme a wrldwide event reaching ver ne millin peple in mre than 65 cuntries arund the wrld, a
number that is grwing every day.
In the 21st century, the message that every child shuld have the right t read is urgent. There are 57 millin children wh are nt in schl and
hundreds f millins mre wh are in schl but are nt learning. By age fur, children frm lw-incme families read far less than thse in high-incme
families.
And yet, the gd news is this: A six-year study f children’s reading habits fund that reading alud t kids every day will put them a year ahead
f kids wh are nt read alud t daily, n matter what kind f family kids are frm.
The message is pwerfully clear: Reading al ud t children can clse the wrd gap. Children wh grw up as readers becme better citizens, and
every child shuld have that right t read. S let’s just pay attentin t the right t read until all children can d it. And yes, in this way, we can, we will,
change the wrld tgether.

Early explrers were attracted there by the secret f Terra Australis. Others sught mney frm catching whales. Still thers wanted t understand
Earth’s ple in rder t better sail the seas. I am a gelgist (地质学家) wh studies the timing and extent f past ice ages. I’ve been very lucky t
cnduct five seasn f research there under the prtectin f the Antarctic Treaty (条约), an internatinal agreement that encurages scientific
cperatin (合作) and envirnmental prtectin.
Antarctica is the nly cntinent that was actually discvered, because it has n native human ppulatin. British explrer Sir James Ck sailed
arund the cntinent in 1772-1775, but saw nly sme utlying islands (离岛). Ck said that if there were any land, it wuld be “never t give way t
the warmth f the sun.” But Ck als reprted that Antarctic waters were rich with wildlife.
Tday parts f the West Antarctica Ice Sheet are particularly clse t cllapse (坍塌). Recent research shw sea level culd rise by 1 meter by 2100
and 15 meters by 2500 if the greenhuse effect cntinues and the ice sheet experiences a rapid cllapse, as it has in the past. Despite the envirnmental
disaster in Antarctica, the cntinent als shws that natins can cperate t find slutins. “I believe the Antarctic Treaty System is the wrld’s mst
imprtant example f peaceful and scientific internatinal cperatin. Thanks t it, 10% f Earth’s land surface is prtected fr wildlife.”
Yet in these bad envirnments, life finds a way t survive—shwing that there are slutins t even the mst difficult challenges. If Antarctica has
taught me anything in 200 years, it’s that we can wrk tgether t deal with prblems. As Ernest Shackletn nce said, “Difficulties are just things t
slve, after all.”

Mre than half f the wrld’s ceans have changed greatly in clr ver the past 20 years, with human-caused climate change as the likely cause,
accrding t the study published in the jurnal Nature. Oceans arund the equatr (赤道), in particular, have becme greener, a trend that cannt be
explained by natural, year-t-year variability (变化性) alne, reflecting changes in their ecsystems.
The cean’s clr changes based n what’s fund in its upper layers. Bluer ceans tend t have little life, while greener ceans have mre
phytplanktn (浮游植物). Phytplanktn are the base f the cean fd web. In a balanced ecsystem, they serve as fuel fr zplanktn and fish, which
are eaten by larger fish, seabirds and marine mammals.
Nevertheless, the change in clr has indicated a change in the ecsystem. While sme areas are likely t have less phytplanktn, thers will have
mre. These kinds f shifts culd have ripple effects thrughut the entire cean ecsystem.
T determine whether this trend was related t climate change, researchers cmpared tw cean-clr mdels which simulated hw the ceans
wuld respnd under tw cnditins: ne with added greenhuse gases and ne withut. The results predicted in the greenhuse gas mdel aligned (一
致) almst exactly with what the researchers fund frm real-wrld data---within 20 years, abut half f the ceans bviusly shifted in clr.
Dutkiewicz said she was nt surprised at this finding. “But still I fund the results verwhelmingly alarming; and there is anther wake-up call that
human-caused climate change has significantly impacted the earth system,” she said. “All changes are causing an imbalance in natural ecsystems.
Such imbalances will nly get wrse ver time if ur ceans keep heating.” she added.

A.T ffer slutins t cean heating.
B.T shw the changes in natural ecsystems.
