Curage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I cnstantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The rt f “curage” is “cr,” the Latin wrd fr heart. Originally, curage meant “t speak ne’s mind by telling all ne’s heart.” While curage is ften assciated with herism nwadays, I believe true curage lies in being pen and hnest abut wh we are and hw we feel.
I recently witnessed an example f true curage. During a muntain-climbing trip with my15-year-ld daughter and sme cllege students, I nticed her struggling t keep up with the grup. Despite my suggestins t rest, she persisted until she culdn’t breathe prperly.
Panicked, I called ut t the frnt fr help, but there was n respnse, and we had n cellphne signal. Frtunately, tw students just came back t check ut n us. They ffered assistance and calmed us dwn. As we cntinued at a slwer pace, they shared their wn experiences, frm starting ut as beginners like my daughter t becming cnsistently amng the first t reach the peak.
“Yu knw,” ne f them said, lking at my daughter, “I was just like yu when I started. But with practice and prper pace, yu’ll get there t.”

A China plane struck a bird after taking ff in Chengdu, Sichuan, and had t immediately return t the airprt last Octber, and it wasn’t the first accident between an aircraft and a bird last year.

In last Octber’s China plane incident, the Beijing-bund flight was able t land nrmally in Chengdu after taking int accunt what the airline described as security cncerns. Senir captain Chen Jiangu said pilts are trained n hw t respnd if they have a bird strike in flight. The pilt in this case did exactly what he was trained t d.
“There are lts f things that are being used by airprts t try t manage the habitat and birds arund the airprt,” said Chen Jiangu. Airprts need t manage bird habitats t reduce r get rid f trees and plants that shelter birds, r address wetlands that can attract birds. T find ut whether these wrries are necessary, we have cnducted nearly 10 years f research. In ur studies, participants in the UK talked with smene they had never met befre. Afterward, they were asked hw much they liked their cnversatin partner and hw much they believed that their cnversatin partner liked them. This allwed us t cmpare hw much peple believed they were liked t hw much they were actually liked.
Time and time again, we fund that peple left their cnversatins with negative feelings abut the impressin they made. That is, peple systematically underestimate hw much their cnversatin partners like them and enjy their cmpany-a false belief we call the “liking gap”.
This bias(偏见) may seem like smething that wuld ccur nly in initial interactins, but its effects extend far beynd a first impressin. Surprisingly, the liking gap can cnstantly affect a variety f relatinships, including interactins with cwrkers, lng after the initial cnversatins have taken place. Having a larger liking gap is assciated with being less willing t ask wrkmates fr help, less willing t prvide wrkmates with pen and hnest feedback, and less willing t wrk n anther prject tgether.
There are numerus strategies t minimize yur biased feelings. One place t start is shifting yur fcus f attentin. Curage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I cnstantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The rt f “curage” is “cr,” the Latin wrd fr heart. Originally, curage meant “t speak ne’s mind by telling all ne’s heart.” While curage is ften assciated with herism nwadays, I believe true curage lies in being pen and hnest abut wh we are and hw we feel.
I recently witnessed an example f true curage. During a muntain-climbing trip with my15-year-ld daughter and sme cllege students, I nticed her struggling t keep up with the grup. Despite my suggestins t rest, she persisted until she culdn’t breathe prperly.
Panicked, I called ut t the frnt fr help, but there was n respnse, and we had n cellphne signal. Frtunately, tw students just came back t check ut n us. They ffered assistance and calmed us dwn. A China plane struck a bird after taking ff in Chengdu, Sichuan, and had t immediately return t the airprt last Octber, and it wasn’t the first accident between an aircraft and a bird last year.

“There are lts f things that are being used by airprts t try t manage the habitat and birds arund the airprt,” said Chen Jiangu. T find ut whether these wrries are necessary, we have cnducted nearly 10 years f research. In ur studies, participants in the UK talked with smene they had never met befre. Afterward, they were asked hw much they liked their cnversatin partner and hw much they believed that their cnversatin partner liked them. This allwed us t cmpare hw much peple believed they were liked t hw much they were actually liked.
Time and time again, we fund that peple left their cnversatins with negative feelings abut the impressin they made. That is, peple systematically underestimate hw much their cnversatin partners like them and enjy their cmpany-a false belief we call the “liking gap”.
This bias(偏见) may seem like smething that wuld ccur nly in initial interactins, but its effects extend far beynd a first impressin. Surprisingly, the liking gap can cnstantly affect a variety f relatinships, including interactins with cwrkers, lng after the initial cnversatins have taken place. Having a larger liking gap is assciated with being less willing t ask wrkmates fr help, less willing t prvide wrkmates with pen and hnest feedback, and less willing t wrk n anther prject tgether.
There are numerus strategies t minimize yur biased feelings. One place t start is shifting yur fcus f attentin. After what happened yesterday, Hilda knew what she was ding. She watched as Katherine perfrmed her underwater search, but Hilda wasn’t surprised when she surfaced empty-handed.
During the tank sweeps, Maya had been swimming playfully, but nw the dlphin stpped suddenly and swam t the back part f the tank where the filter(过滤) bx was lcated. She stuck her nse dwn behind the bx and then swam away. What was Maya ding back there? Hilda wndered. She jumped back int the water and swam ver t take a lk behind the bx, and her questin was answered. Hilda then swam acrss the tank fllwing Maya’s path and emerged frm the water t find Katherine remving her scuba gear. As Katherine turned arund, her muth drpped pen. There was Maya at the edge f the tank with a cmb(梳子) in her muth waiting fr her treat.
“Maya! Where did yu get. that?” demanded Katherine, taking the cmb and thrwing her a fish.
