Recently, fur prfessrs f neurscience were awarded the Brain Prize fr their lifechanging cntributins t the research n migraines (偏头痛), a disease previusly nt understd well.
Prfessr Michael Mskwitz frm Harvard Medical Schl, Peter Gadsby frm King's Cllege Lndn, Lars Edvinssn frm Lund University in Sweden, and Jes Olesen frm Rigshspitalet, Denmark, were celebrated as the recipients f the Brain Prize, the wrld's mst distinguished award highlighting achievements in brain research. The Crw n Prince f Denmark presented the fur prfessrs with a grand prize f rughly 1.5 millin dllars n Octber 25 in Cpenhagen, Denmark.

Typically, these intense head-thrbbing pains are als accmpanied by vmiting (呕吐), dizziness and sensitivity t sund, light, and tuch.
After ver frty years f research, the fur prfessrs pinpinted the majr cause—chemicals released within the brain. Previusly, the main causes f migraines were thught t be stress, pressure r anxiety. In 1979, Prfessr Michael Mskwitz discvered that headaches ccur when thin nerves are fund in ur head and face t interact with a highly-sensitive membrane (膜) surrunding ur brain, releasing chemicals called neurpeptides. These chemicals can then cause the bld vessels in ur head t expand and als send pain signals t the brain. Later, research by Prfessr Gadsby and Edvinssn revealed that the specific neurpeptide which plays the central rle in causing the intense headache is calcitnin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Then, Prfessr Olesen's wrk further cnfirmed that CGRP is indeed respnsible fr the pain, rather than a chemical prduced in the brain as a result f the migraines.
The wrk by these scientists paves the way fr develping mre effective medicine. While past treatments can nly temprarily stp the pain, scientists say that the newly develped drugs nt nly prevent migraines but als dn't cause the harmful side effects patients had t endure.

The Glbal Fd Dnatin Plicy Atlas has issued a recent reprt in rder t recmmend ways t increase fd dnatins, reduce fd waste, and fight hunger, which may help Kenyan leaders meet 2030 fd waste reductin gals.
Fd dnatin can rerute eatable fd—that wuld therwise give ff greenhuse gasses in a landfill—t thse experiencing hunger. Accrding t the Famine Early Warning Systems Netwrk, 3.5 millin Kenyans, rughly 37 percent f the ppulatin, face severe hunger. At the same time, the Plicy Atlas reprts rughly 40 percent f fd prduced within Kenya ges t waste. But Brad Leib, Deputy Directr f Harvard Law Schl Fd Law and Plicy Clinic (FLPC), sees sme prmising changes. "While prgress is nt happening as quickly as needed, Kenya's fd lss index has been steadily reduced frm 1,744 metric tns in 2017, t1,531 in 2018, t 1,446 metric tns in 2019, indicating a steady imprvement and natinal cmmitment t fd lss reductin," reprts Brad Leib.
Accrding t the Plicy Atlas, mtivating fd dnatin with rewards is particularly imprtant, which helps fd dnrs and fd recvery rganizatins make up fr csts necessary fr recvery, string, prcessing, and transprting fd fr dnatin.
"A majr driver f fd waste is incnsistent r unclear date labels that cause cnfusin amng all actrs alng the value chain and limit the ability f businesses t dnate fd. This increases the likelihd that much safe fd will g t waste," Brad Leib tells Fd Tank. Hwever, he acknwledges Kenya's current dual (双的) date labeling laws. While fd may lse its freshness ver time, it is still edible befre expiratin (到期). Dual date labeling n packaged fds reduces cnfusin by defining dates fr bth safety and quality. This helps reduce cnsiderable waste and respnsibility fr dnrs.
Brad Leib believes that the private sectr can als play a significant rle in decreasing fd waste in Kenya. It is vital fr cnsumer educatin campaigns. FLPC's research shws that public-private initiatives can help raise awareness amng cnsumers and dnrs arund issues f fd waste and fd dnatin.
    12. What changes des Brad Leib see? A . Kenya is nt cmmitted t reducing fd lss. B . Prgress in reducing fd waste is happening quickly. C . Peple in Kenya n lnger suffer hunger. D . Kenya has gradually reduced its fd waste.
    13. What des the underlined wrd "edible" mean in Paragraph 4? A . Eatable. B . Affrdable. C . Delicius. D . Cnvenient.
    14. Hw can Kenya reduce fd waste accrding t Brad Leib? A . By reducing fd prduced within the cuntry. B . By using duble date labeling n packaged fd. C . By increasing strehuses. D . By fighting hunger with rewards.
    15. What can we learn frm the last paragraph? A . Only the private sectr is helpful in reducing fd waste. B . Br ad Leib desn't agree with FLPC n fd waste reductin. C . Private and public jint effrts matter arund fd issues. D . Cnsumer educatin campaigns are the mst imprtant.

The wrld is designed fr right-handed peple, but why des a tenth f the ppulatin prefer the left? 16.
The answer t it remains a bit f a mystery. 17 S it's assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的) cmpnent t it. In ther wrds, left-handers are brn that way. In fact, identical twins, wh share the same genes, can smetimes prefer t use different hands. There are als plenty f theries n what else might determine which hand yu write with, but many experts believe that it's kind f randm.
18 The unfavurable assciatins f the use f the left hand amng cultures are varied. In sme areas, the left hand became knwn as the "unclean" hand. In many religins, the right hand f Gd is the favured hand. Fr example, Jesus sits at Gd's right side. Gd's left hand, hwever, is the hand f judgment. Varius activities and experiences becme rude r even signs f bad luck when the left hand becmes invlved. In sme parts f Sctland, it is cnsidered bad luck t meet a left-handed persn at the start f a jurney. In Ghana, pinting, gesturing, giving r receiving items with the left hand is cnsidered rude. A persn giving directins will put their left hand behind them and even physically try t pint with their right hand if necessary. 19.
Frtunately, nwadays mst scieties and cultures n lnger reject left-handedness like befre. Peple cme t realize that left-handedness is natural. Sme researchers find ut that lefties are mre creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is mre easily adaptable t the right-handed wrld as well. 20 Instead, it is a wnderful gift r maybe it is smething yu shuld take pride in.
    A. Being left-handed is n lnger a sad stry nw.
    B. Left-handedness used t be regarded as a disability.
    C. Scientists have nticed that left-handedness tends t run in families.
    D. In sme Asian cuntries, eating with the left hand is cnsidered implite.
    E. Why d they use their left hand instead f their right hand fr rutine activities?
    F. Why d sme parents frce their left-handed children t be right-handed when writing?
    G. Histrically, the left side and left-handedness have been cnsidered a negative thing.
