Researchers at LMU, the Max Planck Institute, and the University f Oxfrd have investigated hw sleep affects memry. They fund a link between breathing and the emergence f certain brain activity patterns in sleep that are assciated with the reactivatin f memry cntents. The data pints t pssible cnsequences f unhealthy breathing n memry.
In 2021, researchers led by Dr. Thmas Schreiner, leader f the Emmy research grup, had already shwn there was a
direct relatinship between the emergence f certain sleep-related brain activity patterns and the reactivatin f memry cntents during sleep. Hwever, it was still unclear whether these rhythms are rchestrated by a central pacemaker. S the researchers jined up with scientists frm ther institutins t reanalyze the data. Their results have identified respiratin as a ptential pacemaker. “That is t say, ur breathing influenceshw memries are cnslidated during sleep,” says Schreiner.
Fr their riginal study, the researchers shwed 20 participants 120 images ver the curse f tw sessins. All the pictures were assciated with certain wrds. Then the participants slept fr arund tw hurs in the labratry. When they awke, they were questined abut the assciatins they had learned. During the entire learning and sleep perid, their brain activity was recrded by means f EEG, alng with their breathing.
The researchers discvered that previusly learned cntents were spntaneusly reactivated by the sleeping brain during the presence f s-called sleep spindles (shrt phases f increased brain activity). “The precisin f the cupling f these sleep-related brain rhythms increases frm childhd t adlescence and then declines again during aging,” says Schreiner.
“Thugh ther studies had already established a cnnectin between breathing and cgnitin during wake, ur wrk makes clear that respiratin is als imprtant fr memry prcessing during sleep,” says Schreiner.
Older peple ften suffer frm sleep disrders, respiratry disrders, and declining memry functin. Schreiner plans t further investigate whether there are cnnectins between these phenmena and whether interventins -- such as the use f CPAP masks, which are already used t treat sleep apnea -- make sense frm a cgnitive perspective.
    28. Hw can breathing affect memry accrding t the first tw paragraphs?
    A. It directly reactivates relative brain activity patterns.
    B. It psitively reinfrce memry cntents in sleep.
    C. It is linked with the emergence f memry cntents.
    D. It influences brain activities related t memry cnslidatin.
    29. What des the underlined wrd “rchestrated” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. cntrlled. B. determined. C. identified. D. lcated
    30. What d we knw abut the participants in the riginal study?
    A. Their brain activities exhibited a recrd high in the experiment.
    B. They each slept arund 4 hurs in ttal in the tw sessins.
    C. They learned the crrespnding relatins between pictures and wrds.
    D. Their brain activities and breathing were recrded in the whle prcess.
    31. What did Schreiner imply abut the study?
    A. It suggested further study n the effectiveness f relevant interventins.
    B. It revealed adults’ brain activities decreased cmpared with children.
    C. It uncvered the cnnectin between breathing and cgnitin.
    D. It ffered an insight int the treatment f sleep disrders.

When yu g running in the wds in yur running tights, elastane is the reasn they fit yu s cmfrtably. Elastane is an elastic material that allws the fabric t stretch and adapt t yur bdy.
But when elastane fibres are mixed with cttn, wl r ther fibres, it will be extremely difficult t separate ut the different fibres, and therefre the materials in the clthes cannt be recycled. Fr this reasn, clthes and ther textiles are amng the materials that we are the wrst at recycling.
But this may change, says Assistant Prfessr Steffan Kvist Kristensen frm Aarhus University. Tgether with a number f clleagues, he is behind a new technlgy that can separate ut fibres in mixed fabrics.
“We’ve develped a methd t remve elastane cmpletely frm nyln. We’re nt quite there yet with cttn, because sme f the fibres are brken dwn in the prcess. But we believe, with sme adjustments, we can slve the prblem,” he says, “The fibres nly break apart if we break the chains f mlecules” .
The many links in the elastane chain are bund tgether by a small mlecule called adiamine. By heating the clthes t 225 degrees Celsius and adding a specific alchl, we have fund a methd t break dwn the bnds in elastane. When this happens, the chains fall apart and the materials separate. The whle prcess takes place in what is in effect a large pressure cker that we feed the textiles int. We then add a little alchl and sme base and heat it up. Then we let it ck fr just ver fur hurs, and when we pen the lid again, the different fibres will have been separated.
S far, Kristensen and his clleagues have nly experimented with tw nyln stckings at a time. The technlgy is therefre nt yet ready fr implementatin at industrial scale. This will require being able t decmpse much larger amunts f clthing. “We can nly scale things up a little because f the limitatins in ur equipment. S it’s up t the industry t embrace the technlgy and scale it up in earnest,” he says, “If they dn't, the technlgy will never take ff.”
    32. Why were clthes difficult t be recycled?
    A. Because elastane adapts perfectly t ur bdy.
    B. Because materials in the clthes cannt be reused.
    C. Because the divisin f diverse fibres culd be tugh.
    D. Because we lack the devices t remve elastic materials.
    33. Which f the fllwing is true accrding t paragraph 5?
    A. Diamines will break dwn when heated t 225 degrees.
    B. The chains will fall apart after a specific alchl is added.
    C. The whle prcess is in fact the same as a cking prcess.
    D. High pressure is a necessity t separate different fibres.
    34. What was Kristensen’s attitude t the future f the technlgy?
    A. Cncerned. B. Optimistic. C. Hpeful. D. Dubtful.
    35. Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
    A. The recycling f used clthes met difficulties.
    B. Scientists uncvered a technlgy t recycle used clthes.
    C. The secret t separating different fibres was unlcked.
    D. Scientist wrked ut ways t upgrade elastane fibres.
