I fell in lve with the minister’s sn the winter I turned furteen. He was nt Chinese. When I fund ut that my parents had invited the minister’s family ver fr Christmas Eve dinner, I cried. What wuld Rbert think f ur shabby Chinese Christmas? What wuld he think f ur nisy Chinese relatives wh lacked prper American manners? What terrible disappintment wuld he feel upn seeing nt a rasted turkey and sweet ptates but Chinese fd?
On Christmas Eve I saw that my mther had utdne herself in creating a strange menu. She was pulling back lines ut f the backs f fleshy prawns. The kitchen was littered with piles f raw fd: a fish with bulging eyes begging nt t be thrwn int a pan f ht il, a bwl f saking dried fungus back t life, a plate f squids whse backs were crisscrssed with knife markings s they resembled bicycle tires.
And then they arrived — the minister’s family and all my relatives. Rbert said hell, and I pretended he was nt wrthy f existence. Dinner threw me deeper int despair. My relatives licked the ends f their chpsticks and reached acrss the table, dipping them int the dzen r s plates f fd. Rbert and his family waited patiently fr plates t be passed t them. My relatives whispered with pleasure when my mther brught ut the whle steamed fish. Rbert made faces. Then my father pked his chpsticks just belw the fish eye and pulled ut the sft meat. “Amy, yur favurite,” he said, ffering me the tender fish cheek. I wanted t disappear. I remained silent fr the rest f the night.
After everyne had gne, my mther said t me, “Yu want t be the same as American girls n the utside. But inside yu must always be Chinese. Yu must be prud yu are different. Yur nly shame is t have shame.”

I passed ne f my US clleagues and gave her a friendly greeting. Her reply was anything but friendly.
    “What?"
“Er. Yu all right? ", I tried again.
She lked at me blankly. Then suddenly the clud seemed t lift frm her mind.
"Oh", she said, "Yu mean, hw am I ding?" I thught yu meant I had smething n my face!”
As a British persn cming t Beijing, I knew there wuld be cultural and language barriers between Chinese peple and myself.
What I wasn't expecting were the cultural and language barriers between ther English-speaking freigners and myself.
Befre the 2012 Lndn Olympic Games, the Daily Mail newspaper published a guide t British English fr Americans. Sme f their examples were: Thse are 'chips that g with yur burger, instead f fries. Yu'd like sme ptat chips? Thse are crisps. And: The best way t travel arund the city during the Olympics will be by the undergrund, the rail netwrk cmmnly knwn as the tube. It is nt the subway ---that is a pedestrian(行人) underpass.”
Any cnversatin I have with an American is prf f why a guide like this is necessary. British peple usually knw the American versins f wrds frm TV r films (srry-mvies), but Americans never seem t have enugh knwledge abut British English.
The truble is, it's nt just Americans. When I speak English t nn-English speakers I never knw whether they have learned British r American English. When they say “chips”, fr example, d they mean “French fries” r “ptat chips”?
I can't help thinking back t the Daily Mail article: When yu talk abut pant in Britain, that means underwear. Trusers is the mre apprpriate term.
Hwever, even thugh British English may have cme first, arund the wrld, the American way f spelling is getting mre ppular
Last mnth a survey released by US scial media platfrm Steemit shwed that English publicatins nw largely use the American spelling, swapping wrds like “centre” fr “center”. S it cmes as n surprise that everyne I knw just says “pants”.

    A. she became cnfident f herself
    B. she was nt sure what t d next
    C. she felt excited fr what she heard
    D. she came t understand the situatin
    55. Which f the fllwing is mst prbably the authr's idea?
    A. British peple dn't care much abut American English
    B. Nn-English speakers can't tell British English frm American English
    C. Nn-native speakers seem t prefer American English t British English
    D. A knwledge f differences between American and British English is very imprtant in cmmunicatin
