In this setting, there’s a special find in a simple shipping cntainer just utside the twn. It’s a new prject called Rcket Greens, led by the Churchill Nrthern Studies Centre (CNSC). Rcket Greens has successfully demnstrated the pssibility f planting fresh, leafy prduce regardless f seasns r weather cnditins.
Erin Greene, a Churchill resident since 2015, became ne f the first subscribers t Rcket Greens’s CSA (Cmmunity Supprted Agriculture) prgram. "When I first mved here, it was very hard t get gd-quality fruits and vegetables. We wuld never get fresh herbs and never see things like Swiss chard r kale," recalls Greene, wh says she nw maintains a healthier diet and has becme mre self-sufficient as a result f the prgram.
In additin t Rcket Greens, CNSC has set up a seeding prject fr cmmunity garden supprt. This invlves planting seedlings during the late fall and early spring that have been distributed t lcal cmmunity members free f charge in summer. Due t the shrt grwing seasn and the challenging agricultural cnditins, this seeding prject ffers a head start. "Cmmunity members can receive plants at n charge. It’s an educatinal tl t learn hw t seed a field prperly and hw t grw yur wn fd in yur wn hme," explains Dylan McCart, directr f CNSC. This year’s seeding prgram will include a variety f crps such as peas, crn and peppers t make up fr the traditinal vegetables that are typically planted during Churchill summers.
"Cnsidering the challenges f perating in a remte lcatin like Churchill, we were ne f the first nes t be able t d it, s it’s great that we were able t have that visin at that time. And it’s still successful tday," McCart says.

A key part f prtecting endangered species is figuring ut where they’re living. Using envirnmental DNA, r eDNA, t track species isn’t new. Fr a few years nw, researchers have been using DNA in water.
Tw teams f scientists — ne in Denmark led by Dr Kristine Bhmann and ne in the UK led by Dr Elizabeth Clare — came up with the same questin at abut the same time: Culd they identify the animals in an area frm DNA that was simply flating in the air? DNA in the air is usually s small that it wuld take a micrscpe t see it. “I thught the chances f cllecting animal DNA frm air wuld be slim thugh much time had been spent n it, but we mved n,” said Bhmann wh was trying t think f a crazy research idea fr a Danish fundatin that funds far-ut science.
One team cllected samples frm different lcatins at Denmark’s Cpenhagen Z, and the ther at Hamertn Z Park in the UK. Clearly, they bth chse the zs. “We realized we have the Cpenhagen Z,” Bhmann recalls. In fact, bth the zs in the UK and Denmark were almst like the zs that were custm-built fr the experiments: The animals in the zs were nn-native, s they really stuck ut in DNA analyses. “If we detect a flaming (火烈鸟), we’re sure it’s nt cming frm anywhere else but the z,” Bhmann says.
In the labratry, by cmparing their samples with examples f DNA frm different animals, the scientists succeeded in identifying many different animals at the zs.
Neither team knew that the ther team was wrking n a similar experiment. The tw were nearing submissin t a scientific jurnal when they discvered abut the ther experiment. Rather than cmpete t rush ut a publicatin first, they gt in tuch and decided t publish their findings as a pair. “We bth thught the papers are strnger tgether,” says Clare.
“The next step is t figure ut hw t take this methd int nature t track animals that are hard t spt, including endangered animals,” says Bhmann.
28.What did Bhmann initially think f the experiment?
    A. It culd be a failure. B. It wuldn’t take lng.
    C. It wasn’t riginal.D. It wuld cst much.
    29. Why did the scientists lk fr animal DNA in the zs?
    A. They raised many rare animals there.B. The zs were specially built fr them.
    C. They culd cllect enugh animal DNA.D. They culd recgnize animals cnfidently.
    30. Hw was the tw teams’ relatinship when they learned f each ther’s wrk?
    A. Cperative. B. Inseparable. C. Cmpetitive. D. Casual.
31.Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Research Teams Test DNA in NatureB. Different Zs Cnduct DNA Studies
    C. DNA in the Air Helps identify AnimalsD. eDNA Prtects Endangered Animals

The impact f fast fashin n the envirnment is significant. Recently Zara, ne f the largest fast-fashin retailers (零售商) in the wrld, put frth a cncept that nly sustainable fabrics are used in clthing prductin. But hw can Zara ever be sustainable? They prduce arund 450 millin garments (衣服) a year and release 500 new designs a week, abut 20,000 a year. Zara’s fast-fashin mdel has been s successful it has inspired an entire industry t fllw them.
Clthing prductin dubled frm 2012 t 2022. The average cnsumer bught 60 percent mre clthing in 2022 than in 2012, but kept each garment half as lng. And less than ne percent f all clthing prduced glbally is recycled.
I spend a lt f time reading the crprate scial respnsibility reprts f large brands and interviewing micr-t-small sized enterprises t see hw they apprach sustainability. The largest significant difference between them is culture.
Small brands fcus n creating a culture f sustainability by using strategies like prducing made-t-rder, s they are nt making mre than what is sld. Mst small brands are pting t wrk under an “anti-fashin calendar”. They chse nt t fllw the intense seasnal calendar that fashin functins under. They d this because waste is ne f their biggest cncerns. They als design clthing t be f the highest quality, ensuring durability and lngevity, s yu may keep it lnger.
Fast fashin is a “grw r die” business, and the fast-fashin grwth mdel used by all large cmpanies is predicated (断定) n limitless grwth. Large glbal crprate retailers are nt seeking t change their fundamental business mdel r create cultures f sustainability. That wuld require re-wrking their entire business structure and ultimately hurt their bttm line.
I wuld start t believe Zara and ther large fashin brands had gd intentins t fight climate change if they started t lk at hw t mve away frm their cntinuus fferings f weekly new prducts. They need t intrduce alternative sustainable business mdel practices. One small step culd be t ffer repair r tailring services. Tailring creates clthes that fit perfectly, subsequently increasing their emtinal value, s that we lve them and keep them lnger.
32.What des the authr intend t shw with the numbers abut Zara in paragraph 1?
    A. Zara is nt ec-friendly.B. Zara is ppular with cnsumers.
    C. Zara is a large fast-fashin retailer.D. Zara is a success in fashin industry.
33.Which f the fllwing shws a cultural feature f small brands?
    A. Designing clthing as needed.B. Designing clthing seasnably.
    C. Prducing clthing as needed.D. Prducing clthing seasnably.
34.What des the underlined part “bttm line” in paragraph 5 relate t?
    A. The fast-fashin retailers.B. The prfits frm fast fashin.
    C. The culture f sustainability.D. The relatinship with cnsumers.
35.What des the last paragraph fcus n?
    A. Hw t make cnsumers lve their clthes.
    B. Hw t make cnsumers buy less clthing.
    C. Hw large fashin brands ffer weekly new prducts.
    D. Hw large fashin brands imprve their services.

French parenting isn’t perfect, but there’s a lt we can learn frm this kind but n-nnsense style f parenting.
French children are allwed t handle difficult things themselves. 36 The early years are when they discver all the cl ways their new bdy wrks and hw t use it. T encurage this autnmy, French parents treat children mre like adults-in-training than helpless babies. They believe kids feel cnfident when they’re able t deal with things n their wn.
Fearful f hurting feelings, American parents tend t praise every child fr everything. 37
Hwever, all that praise eventually turns ut t be pintless. By cntrast, French adults give children apprpriate praise, thus allwing them t feel a true sense f achievement and take pride in what they learn.
Painful experiences are the best learning pprtunities and sheltering children frm this fact f life will merely delay their emtinal develpment. French dctrs never say “srry” when giving kids shts. The French believe underging hurts, is part f life and that there’s n reasn t aplgize fr that. 38
Plus, the expectatin f eye cntact and a plite hell starts frm the minute French children can say hell. They knw saying “hell” and gd manners are nn-negtiable. Teaching them abut that will benefit them fr a lifetime. 39 Be patient with little nes as they learn.
All the abve feels easier said than dne, especially as a tired parent facing an intlerable child. 40
Yur effrts will end up with children’s better behaviur verall.

    Mama's Sup Pt
There are t many treasures in life we take fr granted, the wrth f which we dn't fully realize until they’re pinted ut t us in sme unexpected way. S it was with Mama's sup pt.
Mama's sup was special because there was n recipe fr it. It had been s since her girlhd in Italy, where she learned its secret frm her grandma, wh had inherited(继承)it frm generatin t generatin. Als, it was a symbl f security. Fr ur large immigrant family, Mama's sup guaranteed we wuld never g hungry. And we culd judge ur ecnmic cnditins by its cntents.
At ne time, hwever, Mama's sup pt became a surce f embarrassment t me, fr I feared it wuld cst me a new friend I had made at schl. Sl was an unusual pal fr me because his father was a dctr and they lived in the best part f ur twn. Often Sl invited me t his hme fr dinner, where I fund the fd was gd but tasteless, lacking the heartiness f the ne served frm my mm's flame-blackened pts. Mrever, the atmsphere matched the fd and everything was s frmal. Sl's mther and father were plite, but the cnversatin arund the table was nt natural, which made me a little depressed. And n ne hugged!
In my family, warm hugs were a cnstant—men, wmen, bys and girls—and if yu didn't kiss yur mther, she demanded: "What's the matter? Yu sick?" But at that time in my life, all this was an embarrassment.
