Frtunately, nne f thse things happened, althugh cnditins weren’t perfect enugh fr Rd t make it all the way arund the lake. A strm sent him hme after six days f explring.
The mdern versin f the Saltn Sea was accidentally created in 1905 when the Clrad River brke its banks and began flwing int the dry bed f histric Lake Cahuilla. Befre that, the lake bed naturally filled up and dried ut peridically.
It had attracted Rd since he travelled t the Santa Rsa Muntains several years ag t watch the sun rise and set ver the lake. Since then he has made up his mind t experience it clse up.

On August 21, a carg ship traveling frm Singapre t Brazil became the first t try ut a new kind f sail. The sail is expected t save fuel and cut pllutin. If it wrks well, similar sails culd becme cmmn n carg ships ver the next few years.
The new sail is called the “WindWings”. Cargill, a huge American fd cmpany, bad the ides t create the sail. Because it depends n ships t transprt its fd, Cargill was interested in finding ways t reduce pllutin frm its shipping peratins.
Cargill asked the British cmpany BAR Technlgies t design a sail fr carg ships. BAR was started by Ben Ainslie, a champin sailr. BAR designed a massive wing. It stands 37.5 meters tall and is made f a strng material similar t that used fr wind turbines (涡轮). The center sectin f the sail is 10 meters acrss. On either side f that is a mving wing that’s 5 meters wide. Nt nly can the WindWings be raised and lwered, but each sectin can be turned in many different ways t catch the wind in the best and safest way.
A cmpany called Yara Marine built the WindWings. which were then put n the Pyxis Ocean—a carg ship wned by Mitsubishi. In tests, the Pyxis Ocean was able t reach speeds f up t 10 kph using just the WindWings, and n fuel at all. Nrmally, the Pyxis Ocean will use fuel, but it aims t use far less by letting the wind help ut. Cargill says cmputer studies shw that each WindWing can save 1.65 tns f fuel every day. The Pyxis Ocean has tw WindWings. Cargill says these shuld cut the ship’s pllutin by abut 30%.
The exciting thing abut WindWings is that, if they wrk well, they can be made t fit many carg ships that are currently running n fssil fuels. Jhn Cper, wh runs BAR, says that by 2025, he expects half f new carg ships t cme with sme srt f wind pwer.
28. Why did Cargill want t create WindWings?
A. T change its perating way.B. T cut shipping pllutin.
C. T have mre fd transprted.D. T defeat ther cmpanies.
29. The advantage f a wing mving in different ways is that ________.
A. the ship can get enugh pwerB. fuel can be stred up

Artificial intelligence (AI) cmpanies are pwer-hungry—in mre ways than ne. A new cmmentary published Tuesday in the jurnal Jule argues that AI bts such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT r Ggle’s Bard may ne day sn use as much energy as a small cuntry. The increase in AI demand, as well as the resurces necessary t pwer them, will further make climate change issues wrse due t the greenhuse gas emissins (排放).
“Lking at the grwing demand fr AI service, I find it’s very likely that energy cnsumptin related t AI will significantly increase in the cming years,” Alex De Vries, funder f digital trends watchdg Digicnmist and sustainability at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, said.
Frm the very beginning f its develpment. AI cnsumes a large amunt f energy. Sme research has estimated that simply training ChatGPT required 1,287 MWh f energy. That’s mre than what 120 U.S. families use in an entire year. AI lab Hugging Face reprted that training its wn AI chatbt required rughly 433 MWh, which is the equivalent t 40 U.S. hmes.
De Vries ntes the energy cnsumptin is likely t wrsen as mre and mre cmpanies begin t incrprate (使并入) AI mdels int their prducts. Fr example, Ggle recently annunced a hst f AI tls t its prducts such as Gmail. De Vries estimates Ggle alne will require 29.2 TWh f pwer annually—the equivalent f the annual pwer cnsumptin f Ireland. By 2027, he says, AI pwer cnsumptin will increase by as much as 134 TWh, meaning these systems will be cnsuming as much energy as cuntries like Argentina, the Netherlands and Sweden each year.
Interestingly, even thugh cmpanies are attempting t make their AI systems mre energy-efficient, demand will simply increase as a result. “The result f making these tls mre efficient and accessible can be that we just allw mre applicatins f it and mre peple t use it,” De Vries said.
“The ptential grwth highlights we need t be very mindful abut what we use AI fr,” he said. “It’s energy-intensive (密集的), s we dn’t want t put it in all kinds f things where we dn’t actually need it.”
32. Hw is paragraph 3 mainly develped?
A. By listing figures.B. By analyzing causes.
C. By reasning.D. By cmparing.
33. What des the authr mainly stress in paragraph 4?
A. The develpment f the AI mdels.B. The difficulty f using AI prducts.
C. AI’s large cnsumptin f energy.D. Many cuntries’ demands f energy.
34. What des the authr suggest peple d in the last paragraph?
A. Fcus n the energy-efficiency f AI service.
B. Avid wrking in energy-intensive industries.
C. Explre alternative surces f pwer.
D. Be cautius abut using the AI system.
35. What’s the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
A. T appeal fr revlutin.B. T shw a crisis.
C. T prmte AI cmpanies.D. T intrduce AI.
