It seems like that we're always hearing abut new animals that have becme endangered, but there's sme gd news in Australia: 26 animal species n lnger meet the criteria t be listed as threatened. Australia’s bidiversity has been in decline, with mre than 1, 700 species and eclgical cmmunities knwn t be n the line. In 1999, the Envirnment Prtectin and Bidiversity Cnservatin (EPBC) Act was passed t intrduce prtectins fr endangered animals. The burrwing bettng is ne f 26 Australian species that have returned frm the edge f extinctin.
Seemingly these are wrking, as a recent study published in the jurnal Bilgical Cnservatin reviewed the animals that were previusly r currently listed as threatened between 2000 and December 2022, and discvered that 26 species had recvered t n lnger meet the criteria. Species that have seen imprvement include the charmingly named burrwing bettng, the glden bandict and the bull grey grasswren.
Factrs behind this imprvement include habitat management, cntrl f intrduced predatrs (捕食者) and translcatin f endangered animals t predatr-free islands. Rughly 2,000 years ag, Munt Vesuvius erupted, destrying the Rman cities f Pmpeii and Herculaneum. In 1752, wrkers digging in Herculaneum uncvered a hme that had belnged t a rich persn. Inside, wrkers discvered ver 600 scrlls (卷轴) , mst f which were made frm papyrus — a paper-like material.
