Talking t yurself isn’t just fr humans—it’s fr rbts t. Italian researchers have develped a rbt that can speak t itself, which enables users t hear its thught prcess (过程) and knw hw the rbt makes decisins.
“If yu were able t hear what the rbts are thinking, the rbts might be mre trustwrthy(可信赖的),” ne f the researchers Antni Chella says. “The rbts will be easier t understand fr peple wh aren’t engineers. In ther wrds, we can cmmunicate and wrk with the rbts better.”
Peple talk t themselves when lking fr clarity and mral (清晰的思维及道德方面的) guidance, and it helps in the decisin-making prcess. The researchers set ut t see hw this culd influence rbts, s they develped ne called Pepper, and they trained it t set a table. They then gave it the ability t say, in simple English, what it was “thinking” when cmpleting a jb.
After studying the rbt, the researchers fund that Pepper was better at slving dilemmas (进退两难的困境) when talking t itself. One experiment saw a user ask Pepper t break table setting rules by putting a frk in the wrng place, which led t the rbt asking itself several self-directed questins. It then decided that the user might be wrng, s it made sure the user didn’t give the wrng rder befre it went n talking t itself: “Emm, this situatin is difficult t me. I wuld never break the rules, but I can’t make him unhappy either, s I’m ding what he wants,” Pepper said while putting the frk in the wrng place. The user can understand Pepper’s thughts as it uses its inner vice t slve a dilemma, which the researchers say culd lead t human-rbt trust.
Cmparing Pepper’s perfrmance with and withut inner speech, Chella discvered that the rbt wrked faster with inner speech, which means when it was talking t itself. “Peple were very surprised by the rbt’s ability,” Chella says. “The research makes the rbt different frm ther machines because it has the ability t reasn, t think. Inner speech culd be useful in all the situatins where we trust the cmputer r a rbt fr evaluatin (评价) f a situatin.”
Althugh hearing the inner vice f rbts enriches the human-rbt interactin (互动的), sme peple might find it inefficient because the rbt spends mre time cmpleting jbs when it talks t itself. The rbt’s inner speech is als just the knwledge that researchers gave it. Still, Chella says their research lays the grundwrk fr mre research int hw self-dialgue can help rbts pay attentin, plan and learn.
    27. What can we learn frm the research?
    A. Inner speech helps the rbt finish tasks better.
    B. The research can help peple understand rbts’ actins.
    C. The Italian researchers created a new language fr rbts.
    D. The rbt helped study peple’s decisin-making prcess.
    28. What des the underlined wrd “inefficient” mean?
    A Nt interesting.B. Nt imprtant.
    C. Nt right.D. Nt gd.
    29. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Rbts: Learn t Learn
    B. Rbts: Think Out Lud
    C. Rbts: Make Better Speeches
    D. Rbts: Always Trust Humans
Participatin trphies (参与奖) appeared in children’s sprts cmpetitins abut a century ag. They have been used t encurage and reward children fr participating in funny and healthy activities. The trphies recgnize students’ attendance (到场) and effrt rather than their ability and the cmpetitin results.
Since the 1990s, thugh, there has been an increasingly strng vice that participatin trphies are making the kids “sft”. They ruin kids’ cmpetitive spirit and make children t lazy t wrk hard t get things they want. The thinking ften ges, “Every kid will think they are winners, s they will always feel that they are brn t win, even if they dn’t deserve (值得) t win.”
Hwever, this idea is wrthy f much mre thinking. Des anyne really think that kids are fled int thinking their participatin trphy is a gld medal? Kids are always smarter than that and always mre aware f their scial surrundings. They knw that a participatin trphy just says it was gd fr them t be here having fun. It desn’t say everyne wins the first place.
Kids are learning abut their abilities and strengths every day. The idea that participatin trphies keep kids frm experiencing the “real wrld” is, in my view, ne-sided. Participatin trphies recgnize that kids’ skill sets are wildly different and that we put kids in rganized sprts at yung ages when their skills are still very much in develpment. Participatin trphies celebrate every kid fr being a part f the team r the activity, instead f their skill levels.
And different frm the idea that participatin trphies keep kids frm trying hard things, my pinin is the exact ppsite. They send a message that there’s great value in trying smething that yu dn’t lve r that yu may nt succeed in. Encuraging kids t try and fail at things is the key t building their cnfidence by teaching them that failing is necessary fr grwth and learning. These trphies are a drp in the bucket (桶) fr nw, but their effects may be seen after the kids step int the grwn-up wrld. As kids get lder, their strengths and interests develp mre clearly. At that time, they will jin in mre cmpetitive activities in their prfessinal fields, and they will knw the wrld f, winning and lsing.
Participatin trphies are prtective f children’s mental health, by giving them sft places t land in the rcky jurney f childhd. Kids need kindness frm the adults in their lives. They need t knw that they have inherent (与生俱来的) value and wrth n matter what they achieve r prduce. This view keeps children’s physical and mental well-being frnt and center right frm the start, which culdn’t be mre imprtant if we are t raise mentally healthy children.
    30. Accrding t the passage, the participatin trphies have been used t ________.
    A. celebrate kids’ ability and their cmpetitin results
    B. educate kids that everyne deserves t be a winner
    C. encurage kids t wrk hard t get things they want
    D. reward kids fr jining the fun and healthy activities
    31. The writer wuld prbably agree that ________.
    A. participatin trphies recgnize that kids are brn with value
    B. kids having participatin trphies believe that they are winners
    C. kids having participatin trphies will becme mentally healthy
    D. participatin trphies stp kids frm experiencing the real wrld
    32. What’s the passage mainly talking abut?
    A. The pwer f participatin trphies.
    B. The pressure f participatin trphies.
    C. The enjyment f participatin trphies.
    D. The develpment f participatin trphies.
