Every year, abut 15 billin trees are cut dwn t make way fr agriculture, mining, lgging. and urban expansin. Such mass defrestatin has accelerated glbal warming and endangered the
survival f millins f species. Thugh many natins, rganizatins, and even individuals have tried, n ne culd plant enugh trees t make up fr that lss — but sme innvative entrepreneurs are wrking n a high-tech slutin.
BiCarbn Engineering (BCE), a U. K.-based start-up, has develped a technique that culd plant ne billin trees per year. The methd? Drnes(无人机). Current tree-planting prgrams "are just nt fast enugh," said Irina Fedrenk, a c-funder f the cmpany. "But ur technlgy is autmated, s we can scale up quite realistically and quite quickly."
First, a drne scans the land and develps a 3-D map f the area. Then, using the data frm this "smart map," the team develps an algrithm(算法) fr a unique planting pattern. A drne uses the algrithm t carry ut the planting strategy. The drne flies abut six feet abve the grund, firing grwing seeds at a speed that will get them under the sil. The species planted by drne has a better survival rate than helicpter spreading that's mre cmmnly used. Sme species even have survival rates nearly identical t hand planting.
With GPS and imaging technlgies, experts agree that drnes have becme useful fr accurately mapping large areas f land and measuring tree grwth. But sme scientists are mre skeptical abut their success as a planting technlgy t tackle defrestatin n a large scale. After all, they nly have s much range and battery life.
"Drnes are gd fr measuring secndary grwth and lking at where the frest is cming back, but yu fight defrestatin at a sciecnmic level," says Artur Sanchez, directr f the University f Alberta's Center fr Earth Observatin and Sciences. "The issue f climate change is nt frest restratin, the issue is energy. It is cntrlling cal plants, pwer plants, autmbile emissins. Planting trees is very imprtant, but when yu lk at the distributin f CO₂ emissins, defrestatin accunts fr 10 t 15 percent. The rest is energy. That's what needs t be cntrlled."
8. What is the authr's purpse in mentining many trees are cut dwn?
A. T appeal t us t stp cutting dwn trees.
B. T demnstrate the widespread use f trees.
C. T shw the urgency f planting sufficient trees.
D. T illustrate the effect f ecnmic develpment n frests.
9. What can we knw abut BCE's planting strategy?
A. Drnes can't grw trees faster than current prgrams.
B. Drnes accurately map the land prir t planting.
C. Drnes grw seeds six feet beneath the grund.
D. Drnes make seeds survive better than hand planting.
10. What is sme experts' attitude twards BCE's way t restre frests cmpletely?
A. Dubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Carefree. D. Intlerant.
11. Which statement will Artur Sanchez mst prbably agree with?
A. Restring frest is key t tackling climate change.
B. Mre cal plants are needed t generate abundant energy.
C. A majr part f CO₂ emissins results frm defrestatin.
D. Cal plants and cars emissins shuld be restricted.

Fly n a lamp n a summer evening and, within minutes, insects will begin t gather near the lamp. This behavir has given rise t a ppular simile(比喻) that describes attractin: "like a mth (蛾) t a flame." Thugh insects have been "drawn" tward bright light surces fr a lng time, scientists never truly understd why. Nw, they may finally have an answer.
Insects aren't attracted t artificial lights, accrding t a new paper published Tuesday in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins. Rather, the glw(光) might be interfering with their natural sense f directin. The insects yu see circling street lights, in ther wrds, are likely lst.
The new finding depends n a thery abut navigatin. When insects fly, they can experience whle bdy acceleratin up t five times greater than the acceleratin caused by gravity. As such, it can be difficult fr them t knw which way is up and which way is dwn as they fly thrugh the air.
The study authrs suspect insects rely n the glw cming frm stars, planets and the mn t rerient(定方向) themselves. Fr mst f Earth's histry, the sky was the brightest surce f light at night, s flying insects turned their bdies t make their backs face skyward. But then, artificial light entered the picture.
T reach these cnclusins, scientists used high-reslutin cameras t film insects flying arund artificial lights in Csta Rica. They als attached tiny sensrs t dragnflies and mths, then filmed mtin-capture vides f them in flight. Tgether, these methds allwed researchers t slw dwn the insects' nrmally fast pace and study their mvements in greater detail. The ftage shwed insects turning their backs tward surces f artificial light —even at the price f crashing.
If the light's abve them, they might start rbiting it. When they fly directly ver a light, they fly themselves upside dwn and that can lead t crashes. It really suggests that the mth is cnfused as t which way is up. After running sme experiments, researchers determined that light shining straight dwn prvided the least di sruptin t insects' flight. Lights that pinted straight up, n the ther hand, caused the mst difficulties.
12. What des the underlined wrd "interfering" in Paragraph 2 mst prbably mean?
A. Disturbing. B. Bsting. C. Restring. D. Balancing.
13. What can we infer abut the insects?
A. Bdy acceleratin weakens fr them in flight.
B. Light frm stars is harmful t their navigatin.
C. They ften fly at a very slw speed.
D. They fly with their backs facing light.
14. What causes minimum harm t insects' flight?
A. Light pinting upward. B. Light pinting backward.
C. Light shining dwnward. D. Light shining frward.
15. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Is It Gd t Be Like a Mth t a Flame?
B. Why d Flying Insects Gather near Light?
C. Hw Fast Can Insects Fly at Night?
D. Hw des Insect Flight Evlve?
