In the summer f 2020, a wildfire caused by lightning tre thrugh 43,000 acres f Cima Dme in the Mjave Natinal Preserve in Califrnia, which is hme t the wrld’s largest Jshua tree frest, and destryed 1.3 millin Jshua trees-that’s abut a quarter f the trees. Repairing the frest wuld nt be easy. But a special slutin was adpted: using camels t help restre the unique desert trees.
During the ice age, giant slths (巨型树懒) used t feed n the trees and this helped spread the seeds. But these slths are extinct and nw small mammals (哺乳动物) that are less effective have taken up the rle. “Jshua tree seeds dn’t spread very quickly,” said Debra Hughsn, wh wrked at the Mjave Natinal Preserve. “They dn’t mve very fast r they dn’t mve very far with just small mammals arund.”
The plan was t restre the Cima Dme area first because its higher elevatin allws the trees t survive the effects f climate change. Hughsn and her prfessinal vlunteer team began t plant seedlings (幼苗) in the burned area. Hwever, what had been cnsidered effective in thery didn’t really wrk. The area is a wilderness and even the hike t it takes several hurs.
That’s where Herbie, Sully and Chic came t the rescue.
The idea f using the three camels came frm Nance Fite, a 70-year-ld vlunteer at the reserve. When she heard abut the restratin prject, she made effrts t cnvince the Park Service t let the camels help. She als eventually persuaded her friend, Jennifer Lagusker, wh wns the camels t bring them t the reserve. The three camels have been helping in the restratin prcess since 2021 and arund 3,500 yung Jshua trees have been planted. The camels helped t carry water and the seedlings n the lng trips thrugh the desert reserve.
After this wrk is finished, the Park Service will fcus n a different area that was destryed by the wildfire. The camels will be ready t help ut wherever they are needed.

C. Few peple in the team were willing t plant seedlings.
D. The trees culdn’t survive the effects f climate change.
27. What can we learn frm the text?

Researchers discvered a new functin fr a cmmn prtein in the brain—a develpment that thrws new light n the mysteries f the mind and hlds prmising implicatins fr the treatment f memry lss and pst-traumatic stress disrder (PTSD).
The prtein, called RPT6, nrmally perfrms necessary husekeeping in the brain’s hippcampus (海马体) by wrking as part f a larger prtein cmplex called the prteasme t destry ther prteins. But researchers in the Cllege f Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Schl f Animal Sciences recently nticed this prtein behaving in a previusly undetected way.
“We have fund that RPT6 is capable f this cmpletely different functin where it can cmbine with DNA and increase the expressin f ther genes r prteins during memry frmatin,” said Tim Jarme, assciate prfessr f neurbilgy. “This indicates that RPT6 plays a dual (双重的) rle in memry frmatin, bth inside and utside the prteasme cmplex.”
Gene expressin is critical t memry frmatin. It helps t build the neural netwrks needed t frm and strengthen memries. The discvery, published in the Jurnal f Neurscience, pens up new avenues fr explratin f hw RPT6 functins in the brain and hw it can be cntrlled t imprve memry and reduce the harm f memry disrders like PTSD.
Researchers dn’t yet understand why RPT6 has this dual functin r hw it is helping t cntrl the cells that frm a memry. “There has t be smething else that’s wrking with it t cntrl gene expressin,” Jarme said. “We are trying t understand nw hw it’s ding that.”
Hpefully, the discvery will be helpful t the nging research in Jarme’s lab, which fcuses n understanding and treating memry disrders.
“The discvery f RPT6’s new functin is leading us smewhere new in revealing the cmplexities f the brain and hw we learn and stre memries,” said research scientist Kayla Farrell. “We believe that this will help t infrm new directins int understanding hw gene expressin is cntrlled during memry. In the lng term, this culd lead t ptential treatment f cntrlling and imprving memry.”
28. What des Tim Jarme say abut RPT6 in paragraph 3?
A. It is a new kind f prtein.B. It has little t d with DNA.
C. It can feed mst f the cells.D. It affects memry frmatin.
29. What is still unclear t researchers?
A. What cntributes t RPT6’s dual functin.
B. The rle f gene expressin in memry frmatin.
C. The discvery f RPT6’s dual functin in the brain.
D. Whether RPT6 can increase the expressin f ther genes.
30. What message des Kayla Farrell mainly want t cnvey?
A. The brain is nt cmplex t explre.
B. The finding is f great significance.
C. The new treatment f memry lss wrks.
D. The prblem f string memry is serius.
31. Where des the text mst prbably appear?
A. In a lab reprt.B. In a chemistry textbk.

If yu’ve been n BkTk, an nline cmmunity where readers recmmend, review and therize abut their favrite bks, authrs and genres, yu’ve prbably heard f Rebecca Yarrs’ Furth Wing. On BkTk, the release f Furth Wing came with hype (炒作) arund a mix between rmance and fantasy. The nvel was published last May and its sequel (续集) fllwed just six mnths later.
But questins came: Are publishers and authrs publishing bks t quickly, and des this affect the quality f writing?
On the day f the sequel’s release, Yarrs and her publisher, Red Twer Bks, were met with much criticism abut her misuse f a language’s grammar in the nvel. Many argued that the mistakes culd have been avided if the publishers had hired smene t prfread (校对) the language.
S what des BkTk have t d with this? It was ne f the reasns why within the first week f Furth Wing being published, the bk quickly sht up t the tp f the New Yrk Times Best Sellers list despite criticism.
With the rising readers, it isn’t uncmmn fr bth publishers and authrs t use that hype t their advantage. This was likely a reasn why the series, riginally including three bks, was dragged int a five-bk series.
This is kind f what fast fashin is all abut. Fast fashin refers t the prcess f clthing manufacturing that mves frm prductin/design t stres quickly t keep up with current trends. These pieces are ften cheap and lw-quality and sent t stres with the hpe f selling ut quickly. The same apprach used in the publishing wrld, thanks t BkTk t sme degree, culd lead t decreasing bk quality when writing and editing aren’t able t reach their maximum ptential.
This isn’t t say that bks like Furth Wing are bad just because they’re hyped. But abandning develped wrk fr crwd-pleasers desn’t d all readers justice. These wrries abut the quick turnver in the publishing industry aren’t directed twards independent authrs wh carefully write, edit and publish themselves, but rather twards thse wh verlk the imprtance f everything that ges int the writing prcess.
32. Why des the authr raise questins in the text?
A. T dubt readers’ judgment.B. T keep the text develping.
C. T highlight BkTk’s advantages.D. T prvide backgrund infrmatin.
33. What was the situatin f Furth Wing after its release?
A. It enjyed ppularity.B. It faced little criticism.
C. It was publicly rejected.D. It didn’t sell well in stres.
34. Which f the fllwing shws the authr’s pinin?
A. Bk quality is vital in the publishing industry.
B. Bks like Furth Wing are nt gd nes.
C. Authrs shuld avid ding t many duties.
D. BkTk shuldn’t be t blame fr fast fashin.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. BkTk Is Misleading Cnsumers in Reading.
B. Are Thse Bks Psted Online Wrth Reading?
C. Fast Fashin Emerges in the Publishing Industry.
D. Can the Publishing Industry Adapt t Challenges?
