Climbing, I nce thught, was a very manly activity, but as I fund my way int this activity, I came t see that smething quite different happens n the rck.
Like wild swimming, rck climbing invlves yu int the landscape. On the rck, I am fully fcused. Eyes pay clse attentin, ears are alert, and hands mve acrss the surface. Unlike walking, where I culd happily wander abut absent-mindedly, in climbing, attentive bservatin is essential.
As an arts student studying English literature, I discvered a new type f reading frm utdr climbing. Watching them, I wanted t pssess that skillful “language”.
My prgress happened when I wrked fr the Caingrms Natinal Park Authrity. Guiding my explratins int this strange new landscape was Nan Shepherd, a lady t. Unlike the gal-directed mindset f many muntaineers, she is nt cncerned with peaks r persnal achievement. Shepherd sees the muntain as a ttal envirnment and she celebrates the Caingrms as a place alive with plants, rcks, animals and elements. Thrugh her generus spirit and my wn curisity, I saw that rck climbing need nt be a prcess f testing neself against anything. Rather, the intensity f fcus culd develp a persn int anther way f being.
Spending s much time in high and stny places has transfrmed my view n the wrld and ur place in it. I have cme int physical cntact with prcesses that g way beynd the everyday. Wrking with gravity, gelgy (地质学), rhythms f weather and deep time, I gain an actual relatinship with the earth. This bnd lies at the heart f my passin fr rck climbing. Spending s much time in high and stny places has transfrmed my view n the wrld and ur place in it. I have cme int physical cntact with prcesses that g way beynd the everyday.
