Built in 1990, the Mriyama City Firefly Frest Museum has been trying t recver the number f the Genji firefly (源氏萤火虫), whse ppulatin was near extinctin in the first half f the 20th century.
In Japan, fireflies have lng been the sign f summer. Mriyama’s Genji fireflies were especially prized fr their vivid, yellw-green glw. Hwever, frm 1868 t 1912, a cmmercial firefly industry develped. In just ne night, a single hunter culd catch abut as many as 3,000 fireflies, sweeping the earth with brushes t frighten just egg-laying fireflies frm riverbanks. It was easiest t catch female fireflies when they laid their eggs. Thus, there were fewer and fewer left t prduce the next generatin.
