When margarine(人造黄油) was first sld in the 1800s, plentiful alarmist wrds were uttered abut it. Hwever, it was simply a cream f vegetable il and water, a prcessed, mre sustainable and healthier alternative t an animal prduct. Anxiety abut new fds and hw they are prduced cntinue s tday. Public discussins are full f cncerns that “ultra-prcessed fds” r “UPFs” are dwnright unhealthy. One particular categry in a fierce sptlight is plant-based meats. But hw and where fd is made desn’t determine hw safe r nutritius it is.
The term UPFs was first used in 2009 by Carl s Mnteir, a nutritinist. In a 2017 paper, he said he was wrried that the shared experience f cking was being increasingly lst and peple weren’t eating tgether. In particular, he was seeing rising rates f diabetes and besity. Keen t identify the rt cause f these issues, he fcused n fd nt made at hme, but in factries. But the thing is, as Mnteir has stated penly, the UPF categrisatin was never designed t grup fds n the basis f nutritin.
Just like prk sausages and chicken ppcrn, plant-based alternatives are made in factries, s are cnsidered UPFs. But unlike thse animal prducts, they dn’t require antibitics(抗生素) r hrmnes during prductin, require up t 96 percent less land, have carbn emissins up t 98 percent lwer, need up t 99 percent less water and result in 100 percent fewer animals dying.
And side by side, they are almst always healthier than the ver-prcessed animal meat prducts they replace, especially n fat and fibre cntent. Just cmpare the labels n the packets next time yu are in the supermarket.
Many lud vices are raising cncerns, suggesting that all UPFs, especially plant-based meats, are “unnatural”, “fake” and “full f chemicals”. We are seeing histry repeat itself, and a fear f new fds being arused all ver again. But the science is unmistakably clear: diets rich in plant-based ptins are better fr bth peple and the planet, factry r n factry.
    28. Why des the authr mentin margarine in paragraph 1?
    A. T stress the sales dilemma margarine faced befre.
    B. T illustrate peple’s misunderstanding abut margarine.
    C. T shw the ignred benefits f margarine t peple’s health.
    D. T emphasize peple’s lngstanding wrry abut nvel fds.
    29. Why did Mnteir create the UPF categrisatin?
    A. T classify the fd made at hme.
    B. T encurage peple t ck and eat tgether.
    C. T discver the cause f sme rising health prblems.
    D. T determine the nutritin level f factry-prduced fd.
    30. What d the numbers in paragraph 3 imply?
    A. Plant-based meats are mre ecfriendly.
    B. Plant-based meats shuldn’t be cnsidered as UPFs.
    C. Plant-based meats will replace UPF animal meat prducts.
    D. Plant-based meats are healthier than sausages and ppcrn.
    31. What des the authr think f the cncern ver plant-based meats?
    A. Unnecessary. B. Temprary. C. Reasnable. D. Alarming.
    D
We have all experienced that feeling f mental exhaustin after fcusing n a tricky prblem. Detailed thinking certainly feels like hard wrk, but is it? The answer is a tuch mre subtle than yu might suspect. Intriguingly, when it cmes t energy use, the brain desn’t distinguish between tasks that we traditinally regard as “hard” and thse that cme mre naturally. This was first demnstrated in the 1950s in a study shwing that the brain’s level f metablism(新陈代谢) is remarkably cnstant, regardless f whether we are cncentrating n mental math r letting ur mind wander.
Yur brain assigns resurces t its different parts depending n the mental activity being carried ut. But there is a trade-ff. “When the demand f a mentally challenging task increases, yu see increased metablism in the neurns(神经元) respnsible fr the task,” says Nilli Lavie at University Cllege Lndn. Meanwhile, yu see crrespnding decreases in ther brain areas. Fr instance, Lavie and her clleagues measured energy use in the brain regin respnsible fr daydreaming and fund that it decreased when vlunteers carried ut a prblem-slving task that required fcused attentin. S thinking hard des burn mre energy in the brain regin invlved, but this is ffset by energy savings in ther parts f the brain.
Hwever, yur brain desn’t see it that way. “It wrries abut an imbalance f supply ver demand,” she says. When the brain detects exhaustin f glucse(葡萄糖) — the sugar that fuels the brain — in any regin, it perceives it as smething bad. This is what gives rise t the feeling f being wrn ut after cntinuus fcus.
S, after a tugh exam, the sensatin f having burned thrugh a supercmputer’s wrth f energy is real, thugh yur brain has used few r n extra calries verall. “There is a cnstant rate f neural energy in the brain,” says Lavie. “It is irrelevant whether it is spent n a task requiring cncentratin r n a distractin.”
    32. What is the main idea f paragraph 1?
    A. We all get tired after hard fcus.
    B. Thinking hard desn’t use mre energy.
    C. A study shws the brain’s metablism level.
    D. Detailed thinking is cnsidered harder than mind wandering.
    33. What will happen t the regin fr daydreaming when yu’re highly fcused?
    A. It burns an increased rate f calry.
    B. It stimulates the neurns fr the task.
    C. It’s als invlved in the task and requires energy.
    D. It reduces neural activity and spares mre energy.
    34. Which f the fllwing best replaces the wrd “ffset” underlined in paragraph 2?
    A. Balanced. B. Absrbed. C. Dminated. D. Released.
    35. Why des a mentally challenging task lead t mre tiredness?
    A. The brain detects signals f high energy demand.
    B. The brain is punishing yu fr wrking t hard.
    C. The brain is lsing the balance f energy supplying.
    D. The brain gets bred easily and refuses t be engaged.

After my children finished cllege, they insisted it was my turn, s I called Daltn State Cllege and set up a time t take the Cmpass Test t see if I needed remedial curses. The next day, when I was n the highway heading there, Rachel, my middle child called. When she learned my destinatin, I heard the pride in her vice. “Yu’ve gt this, Mama!”

    A pssible versin:
Since it might be the nly questin I culd answer, I sheepishly raised my hand. The prfessr’s eyes met mine, “Yes, yu.” He ndded in my directin. In a near-whisper, I uttered the exact date, arusing a surprised murmur thrughut the classrm. S I added, “The landing tk place n my fifteenth birthday.” The prfessr’s eyes twinkled with amusement, and a warm chuckle escaped his lips. “Ah, a birthday landing! Well, I must say, having a frnt-rw seat t histry is quite the advantage, wuldn’t yu agree?” His lighthearted respnse put me at ease. It was a small victry wing t a beautiful cincidence, but it bsted my cnfidence. My fear f drawing attentin t myself melted away quietly, as I realized perhaps, I wasn’t as ut f place as I had assumed.
Other fears didn’t turn int reality either: I successfully finished the remedial curses. I fund a seat in every class, and n prfessr singled me ut. As fr my fear f standing ut in a sea f yung faces, I’d frgtten all abut it since the ther students welcmed me t their lunch table, “friended” me n Facebk, and cllabrated n class prjects. The encuragement frm my children and the reassurance frm the yung flks gave me the strength t push past my fears. As the semester prgressed, I eagerly absrbed new infrmatin and engaged in discussins, feeling a sense f accmplishment with each passing day. It was a jurney f rediscvery, and I was determined t make the mst f this secnd chance at pursuing my dreams.
