Wuld yu believe that the first utstanding deaf teacher in America was a Frenchman? His name was Laurent Cleric. He became a friend f Thmas Hpkins Gallaudet and tgether they funded America’s first schl fr the deaf.
Laurent Cleric was brn in a small village near Lyns, France, n December 26, 1785. When he was ne year ld, he fell int a fire, lsing bth his hearing and his sense f smell. At 12, Laurent entered the Ryal Institutin fr the Deaf in Paris where he excelled in his studies. After he graduated, the schl asked him t stay n as an assistant teacher.
Meanwhile, in America, Thmas Hpkins Gallaudet was studying t be a minister. He was very cncerned abut the lack f educatinal pprtunities fr the deaf. Therefre, in 1815, Gallaudet sailed t Lndn, England t seek ideas n hw t teach deaf peple. While he was there, he met a French educatr f the deaf wh invited him t g t Paris t spend three mnths learning at the Ryal Institutin fr the Deaf, the schl where Laurent Cleric was teaching. Gallaudet accepted the ffer. The tw wrked and studied well tgether. When the time came fr Gallaudet t return, he asked Cleric t cme with him. The tw men set sail n June 18, 1816. The vyage acrss the Atlantic Ocean tk 52 days; hwever, Cleric and Gallaudet put the time t gd use. Cleric studied English, and Gallaudet studied sign language.
