It is calculated that sme f the wrld’s 7,000 languages are in danger f getting extinct. “Fr example, Ainu, a language in Japan, is nw seriusly threatened, with nly 10 native speakers remaining,” said lead study authr Tatsuya Aman at the University f Cambridge in England.
The scientists fund that 25 percent f the wrld’s languages are threatened(威胁). After identifying where the endangered(濒危的)languages were, they lked fr any envirnmental and scial r ecnmic factrs thse languages might have in cmmn, such as pr areas r rapid ppulatin grwth. “We find that at the glbal scale, language speaker declines are strngly linked t ecnmic grwth—that is, declines are particularly ccurring in ecnmically develped regins,” said Aman.
“One imprtant finding f this new study is that languages in the trpics and Himalayan regin are likely t be increasingly threatened in the near future, because these regins still have many lcal languages with a small number f speakers, and at the same time are experiencing rapid ecnmic grwth,” said Aman.
Ecnmic grwth may endanger languages fr a variety f reasns. Fr instance, speakers f endangered languages may view anther mre ppular language as ffering ecnmic pprtunities, and thus abandn their wn languages. “There are ther imprtant factrs that might end anger languages,” said the researchers. Fr instance, plicies regarding hw languages are used and taught in schls can be very different amng cuntries and even within each cuntry, and these factrs may explain mre detailed patterns in language endangerment.
Aman suggested it culd be pssible t frecast(预见)future threats t the diversity(多样化)f languages. “There exists detailed infrmatin n future changes in the envirnment, ecnmies and climates(气候),” Aman said. “Using such infrmatin, tgether with the findings f this study and further analysis, we wuld like t understand what will happen t the wrld’s languages, where it will happen and which languages will be threatened in particular.”
