The last decade saw the rise f the field f “plant neurbilgy (植物神经生物学)”. That debatable field is based n the idea that plants — which d nt pssess brains — handle infrmatin in ways similar t cmplicated animal nervus systems. This thinking implies that plants culd feel happiness r srrw r pain, make intentinal decisins and even pssess cnsciusness. But the chances f that are “effectively zer”. “There’s nthing in the plant cmparable t the cmplexity f the animal brain,” says Taiz, frm the University f Califrnia, Santa Cruz.
Sme plants are capable f cmplicated behavirs. Fr example, wunded leaves can send warning signals t ther parts f the plant. But plants perfrm these with equipment that’s very different frm the nervus systems f animals, n brain required, Taiz argues. He and his clleagues pint ut methdlgical faults in sme f the studies that claim plants have brain-like cmmand centers and animal-like nerve cells. But beynd the debate ver hw these studies are cnducted, Taiz’s team argues that plant cnsciusness desn’t even make sense frm an evlutinary pint f view.
“Cmplicated animal brains advanced in part t help a living being catch a meal and avid becming ne,” Taiz says. “But plants are rted t the grund and rely n sunlight fr energy, an inactive lifestyle that desn’t require quick thinking r utsmarting a predatr (捕食者) r the energetically expensive nervus systems that enable thse behavirs.” “What use wuld cnsciusness be t a plant?” Taiz asks. “If a plant wrried and suffered when faced with a threat, it wuld be wasting s much energy that it wuldn’t have any left t d anything abut that threat,” Taiz says. “Furthermre, plants have plenty t d withut having t be cnscius, t. With sunlight, carbn dixide and water, plants create the cmpunds that sustain much f the rest f life n Earth,” Taiz pints ut. “Isn’t that enugh?”
What des the rise f “plant neurbilgy” indicate?

A new study has fund that a child’s reading speed can be imprved by simply increasing the space between letters within a piece f text. The research, led by Dr. Steven Stagg f Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), examined the benefits f letter spacing and clured verlays (颜色标注) amng children.
Tw grups f children, dyslexic(有阅读障碍的) and nn-dyslexic children, were asked t read fur texts with either standard r extra-large letter spacing, bth with and withut a clured verlay. They were instructed t read the text ut lud while being recrded. In additin t imprving reading speed, it als resulted in a significant decline in the number f wrds missed by the children with dyslexia. Hwever, the study fund that clured verlays had n significant impact n reading speed r the reductin f errrs fr either grup.
Dr. Stagg, Senir Lecturer in Psychlgy at ARU, said: “We believe extra-large letter spacing wrks by reducing what is knwn as the ‘crwding effect’, which can hamper the recgnitin f letters and reduce reading speed.”
“Our findings strngly suggest that teachers can be cnfident that all children wuld be helped by increased letter spacing in reading materials.” Dr. Stagg added. “While we fund that clured verlays prvided little benefit, we suggest children shuld be encuraged t use verlays if they find these help their reading. Clured verlays may nt increase reading speeds, but they may extend reading stamina(持久力). Previus research suggests their benefits may nt becme apparent if reading time is less than 10 minutes and the shrt reading duratin f the tests in ur study may have put clured verlays at a disadvantage.”
32. What can we learn abut increased letter spacing frm paragraph 3?
A. It enhances reading cmprehensin. B. It sharpens reading skills.
C. It aruses reading interest.D. It reduces reading errrs.
33. What des the underlined wrd “hamper” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
A. Prevent.B. Obtain.C. Change.D. Invlve.
34. What can be inferred abut clured verlays frm paragraph 5?
A. They might wrk better in shrt reading.
B. They might nt be recmmended by experts.
C. They might nt have been evaluated fairly.
D. They might have sme disadvantages.
35. What’s the best title f the passage?
A. Extra-large letter spacing can’t necessarily prmte children’s reading ability.
B. Clr verlays can prmte children’s reading ability.
C. Extra-large letter spacing can prmte children’s reading ability.
D. Clr verlays may nt increase reading speeds.
