    On my sn Andrew’s 15th birthday, I tk him t a she stre t get a pair f shes. We arrived right when the stre pened because Andrew is a nnspeaking autistic (自闭) and prefers shpping when it’s nt busy. After chsing the desired shes, we paid and thanked the clerks. “It’s Andrew’s birthday tday. Fifteen!” I said. “Happy birthday!” they said. “Have fun!”

    In Shark Bay, Australia, bttlense dlphins that aren’t related have been bserved teaching each ther a new way t use a tl, a behavir that until nw scientists have fund nly in humans and ther great apes. It’s als the first knwn example f dlphins transmitting such knwledge within the same generatin, rather than between generatins.
    In a practice called shelling, dlphins will chase fish int abandned giant snail shells n the seaflr, then bring the shells t the surface, and shake them with their nses, remving the water and catching the fish that fall ut.
    “The fact that shelling is scially transmitted amng dlphin peers rather than between mther and child sets an imprtant milestne,” senir study authr Michael Krutzen said.
    In 2007, Krutzen launched a study f Shark Bay’s dlphins, identifying mre than a thusand individual dlphins ver 11 years. During this time, scientists bserved shelling 42times amng 19 dlphins. Half f these events ccurred after a marine heatwave in 2011, which may have caused a die-ff amng giant sea snails, leading t mre shells n the seaflr.
    Because f the length f their study, scientists had very detailed knwledge f the individual dlphins’ family histries, ages, sexes and behavir, making it easier fr them t study the 19 dlphins that practiced shelling. Fr instance, they bserved that the dlphins that practised shelling hung ut with ther shellers, s it’s likely that they cpied frm thse they spent time with, says study lead authr Snja Wild.
    The team knew that envirnmental factrs-specifically, whether shelling dlphins did s simply because they lived in a shell-rich area-culd explain this peer-t-peer transmissin. A genetic characteristic amng a family grup was anther pssible reasn.
