In the small but clse-knit (志同道合的) caving cmmunity, ne f the mst imprtant rules is that whever discvers the cave gets t name it! Fr the Suthern Tasmanian Caverneers, there was nly ne name suitable fr a cave whse depth became apparent during the wrst days f the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia — Delta Variant.
“There are a lt f different wrds attached t the pandemic that are quite descriptive. S we were able t g with the whle COVID-19 naming theme fr the entire cave,” Smart explained.
The entrance t the cave, which is tight and narrw, is Test Statin Queue. Then there's anther hrrible sectin called Clse Cntact, a sprawling (杂乱不堪的) hrizntal bit called Superspreader Event and a wide, beautiful part nw called Freedm Day.
While the cave has been discvered by pure chance, these days there are many scientific tls that cavers can use t lcate their next site and cllect infrmatin befre even ging dwn int ther sectins. Once they narrwed it dwn t a spt, they used dye (染料) t mark the lcatin f the cave’s water surce — a waterfall deep inside.
Fr Smart, the majr appeal f caving is the wide range f activities it cvers. “It’s srt f an addictive hbby because n the ne hand, it’s great fun,” she said. “But it’s als science because we’re putting all these sectins tgether. The destructin f trpical frests is happening at an alarming rate t make way fr crps. After these lands are shrt f nutrients they’re abandned, which can lead t the natural regrwth f the frest that was nce there. The finding suggests that s-called recvered frests, als knwn as secndary frests, culd play a key rle in restring ecsystems.
T better understand this prcess, Lurens Prter at Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands and his clleagues analyzed 77 secndary frest sites acrss the trpical regins f Central and Suth America, and in West Africa. These sites were all at varius stages f regrwth —fr example, sme were 20 years ld, and thers were 120.
The team cntrasted each secndary frest with nearby ld-grwth frest—frests that haven’t had majr disturbance. The mre similar the secndary frests were t their neighbring ld-grwth frests, reasned the researchers, the mre they had recvered.
The team fund that after 20 years, the average secndary frest that had grwn frm farmland that was used with lw t medium intensity (强度) had recvered 78% f ld-grwth frest attributes (属性). “It ges way faster than we thught,” says Prter.
But the researchers fund significant discrepancy between the recvery time fr the different frest attributes. Sils were the quickest t bunce back with mst recvery happening within 10 years. It tk 25 — 60 years fr plant species diversity t recver.
Despite the enrmus amunt f defrestatin that has and cntinues t ccur, there’s hpe that these frests can bunce back naturally, says Prter. Secndary frests currently make up ver 28% f trpical frests in Central and Suth America, and are imprtant fr lcking up carbn which is imprtant t deal with climate change. In additin, they attract mammals, birds and insects back t the area, which is imprtant fr ecsystem restratin.
“These results are prmising,” says J. Leightn Reid at Virginia Tech. “Hwever, the sites in this study dn’t represent regeneratin n the average piece f defrested land, and many defrested sites will recver much mre slwly than the nes studied here.”
12. Why did the researchers cntrast secndary frests with nearby ld-grwth frests?
A. T measure the recvery f secndary frests.
B. T detect threats t secndary frests.
C. T learn mre abut frest attributes.
D. T determine the cntributing factrs f frest recvery.
13. What des the underlined wrd “discrepancy” mean in Paragraph 5?
A. Link.B. Dependence.C. Difference.D. Similarity.
14. What is a hpeful phenmenn accrding t Prter?
A. Fewer trpical frests are being defrested.
B. Ecsystem restratin is happening in frests.
C. The survey cvers a representative sample f sites.
D. A quarter f America is cvered by secndary frests.
15. What did the research team find abut trpical frests?
A. They went hand in hand with the ecsystem restratin.
B. They featured secndary frests that culd recver themselves.
C. They culd re-establish themselves quickly n abandned land.
D. They were ften abandned after being defrested fr agriculture.
