Twenty years ag, I received an ffer fr a minr rle in a small independent film called Scrpin Spring. I gt the script and I didn’t read ne page f it, nt a wrd. Why? Because I wanted t lubricate (润滑) my creative juices and rid myself f all the theretical tensin I’d been carrying since thse acting classes in university. I wanted g back t hw I acted when I first started, when I played this guy named David Wendersn, when reading just ne line f the script cmpletely unlcked the character fr me. I wanted t be back when I was a natural, a free actr.
Tw weeks later, I was n the set fr the film. I knew my man. I was a cruel drug dealer frm Mexic, willing t kill fr mney. I even lked the part: unshaven, greasy hair, black bts, leather jacket. Time t sht the scene. N prblem. I arrived in character. I didn’t intrduce myself t the ther actrs because my man didn’t care abut them and my man was ging t kill them in this scene anyway. Just befre we tk ur marks a prductin assistant came up t me, “Sme script, Mr. McCnaughey?” I tk them and just shved them in my pcket withut lking at them. All the actrs settled n t their marks and prepared fr “actin.” Well, I guess I lst my nerve a little bit because I decided it wuld be a gd idea, right at this mment, just befre we rlled the camera, t have a quick glance at the scene and the dialgue. My thinking at the time? If it was written well, I wuld immediately remember the written lines because bviusly that’s what my man wuld say, and if it’s nt written well, then, I wuld just be my man and d and say what he wuld d and say anyway. I unflded the script—my heart was racing and my mind went blank. One page. Tw pages. Three pages... Of alng dialgue... In Spanish!
That directr never cperated with me again even after I acquired an Oscars in Hllywd. Knwing yur man desn’t mean knwing Spanish.

    A. He was nt welcme n the set.
    B. He didn’t care abut them at all.
    C. He barely knew them n his arrival.
    D. He did what the character wuld d.
    26. What can we learn abut Mr. McCnaughey?
    A. He has a gd cmmand f Spanish.
    B. He made great achievements in acting.
    C. He played a leading rle in Scrpin Spring.
    D. He became famus fr he played Wendersn.
    27. Which statement was the authr mst likely t agree with?

    B. An actr needs strng mental strength.
    C. A minr rle is less wrth great effrts.
    D. Preparatin speaks luder than creativity.

    Skin: The Bdy’s Canvas
If yu culd take ff yur skin and lay it flat, it wuld cver an area f abut 1.9 square meters. Skin is, by far, the bdy’s largest rgan. Cvering almst the entire bdy, skin prtects us frm a variety f external frces. Fr example, it prtects us frm extremes f temperature, damaging sunlight, harmful chemicals, and dangerus infectins. Skin is als packed with nerves, which keeps the brain in tuch with the utside wrld. The health f ur skin and its ability t perfrm its prtective functins are crucial t ur well-being. Hwever, the appearance f ur skin is equally - if nt mre - imprtant t many peple n this planet.
Take skin clr, fr example. Yur genes determine yur skin’s clr, but fr centuries, humans have tried t lighten r darken their skin in an attempt t be mre attractive. In the 1800s, white skin was desirable fr many Eurpeans. Skin this clr meant that its wner was a member f the upper class and did nt have t wrk in the sun. Amng darker-skinned peple in sme parts f the wrld, prducts used t lighten skin are still ppular tday. During the 20th century, attitudes tward light skin shifted in the ppsite directin in ther cultures, as cities grew and wrk mved indrs. Tanned skin began t indicate leisure time and health. In many places tday, tanning n the beach r in a saln remains ppular, even thugh peple are mre aware f the dangers f UV rays.
    Identity and Status
Just as peple have altered their skin’s clr t dente wealth and beauty, s t have cultures arund the glbe marked their skin t indicate cultural identity r cmmunity status. Tatting, fr example, has been carried ut fr thusands f years. Leaders in places including ancient Egypt, Britain, and Peru wre tatts t mark their status, r their bravery. Tday, amng the Mari peple f New Zealand as well as in cultures in Sama, Tahiti, and Brne, full-facial tatts are still used t identify the wearer as a member f a certain family. These tatts can als symblize the persn’s achievements in life.
In Japan, tatting has been practiced fr thusands f years, but was utlawed in the 19th century. Althugh there are n laws against it tday, tatts are still strngly assciated with criminals -particularly the yakuza, r the Japanese mafia, wh are knwn fr their full-bdy tatts. The cmplex design f a yakuza member’s tatt usually includes symbls f character traits that the wearer wants t have. The prcess f getting a full-bdy tatt is bth slw and painful and can take tw years r mre t cmplete.
In sme cultures, scarring - a marking caused by cutting r burning the skin - is practiced, usually amng peple wh have darker skin n which a tatt wuld be difficult t see. Fr many men in West Africa, fr instance, scarring is a rite f passage - an act that symblizes that a male has matured frm a child int an adult. In Australia, amng sme native peples, cuts are made n the skin f bth men and wmen when they reach age 16 r 17. Withut these, they were traditinally nt permitted t trade, sing ceremnial sngs, r participate in ther activities.
Nt all skin markings are permanent, thugh. In cuntries such as Mrcc and India, wmen decrate their skin with clrful henna designs fr celebratins such as weddings and imprtant religius hlidays. The henna clring, which cmes frm a plant, fades and disappears ver time.
In recent years in many industrialized natins, tatting, henna(散沫花染料) bdy art, and, t a lesser degree, scarring have been gaining in ppularity. What makes these practices appealing t thse living in mdern cities? Accrding t phtgrapher Chris Rainier, whse bk Ancient Marks examines bdy markings arund the glbe, peple are lking fr a cnnectin with the traditinal wrld. “There is a whle sectr f mdern sciety - peple in search f identity, peple in search f meaning,” says Rainier. “Hence, there has been a huge explsin f tatting and bdy marking.” Rainier reasns that it’s “mankind wanting identity, wanting a sense f place and a sense f culture within their cmmunity.”

    C. Peple lking fr identity shuld wear ethnic clthing.

    The Wrld’s Favrite Drug
It’s 1:45 a.m., and 21-year-ld Thmas Murphy is burning the midnight il, studying fr an imprtant engineering exam he has at 2:00 in the afternn later tday. T stay awake and alert, he’s had tw cups f cffee in the last three hurs and is nw dwning a ppular energy drink —ne that has tw t three times the amunt f caffeine as a similar sized can f sda. Many students like Murphy, as well as marathn runners, airline pilts, and lng-distance travelers, we their energy t ne f humankind’s ldest stimulants(刺激物): caffeine.
The pwer t cunter physical fatigue and increase alertness is part f the reasn caffeine ranks as the wrld’s mst ppular md-altering drug. It is fund nt nly in sdas, energy drinks, cffee, and tea, but in diet pills, pain relievers (like aspirin), and chclate bars. Many scieties arund the wrld have als created entire rituals arund the use f caffeine. Fr example, there’s the cafe culture f France, the tea ceremny in Japan, and the mrning cup f cffee r tea that marks the start f the day in many cultures.
Caffeine is present in many f the fds and drinks we cnsume, but is it gd fr us? Charles Czeisler, a scientist and sleep expert at Harvard Medical Schl, believes that caffeine causes us t lse sleep, which he says is unhealthy. “Withut adequate sleep—the typical eight hurs—the human bdy will nt functin at its best, physically, mentally, r emtinally.” T ften, Czeisler says, we cnsume caffeine t stay awake, which later makes it impssible fr us t get the rest we need.
Health risks have als been tied t caffeine cnsumptin. Over the years, studies have attributed higher rates f certain types f cancer and bne disease t caffeine cnsumptin. T date, hwever, there is n prf that caffeine actually causes these diseases.
A number f scientists, including Rland Griffiths—a prfessr at the Jhns Hpkins Schl f Medicine in the United States—believe that regular caffeine use causes physical dependence. Heavy caffeine users, Griffiths says, exhibit similar behavirs. Fr example, their mds fluctuate frm high t lw, they get mild t severe headaches, r they feel tired r sad when they can’t have a caffeinated drink. T minimize r stp these feelings, users must cnsume caffeine - a behavir Griffiths says is characteristic f drug addictin.
Despite these cncerns, the general pinin in the scientific cmmunity is that caffeine is nt dangerus when cnsumed in mderatin. This means having ne r tw small cups f cffee (abut 300 milligrams f caffeine) per day, fr example. Furthermre, a lt f current research cntradicts lng-held negative beliefs abut caffeine, and suggests that it may, in fact, have health benefits. Fr instance, studies have shwn that caffeine can help ease muscle pain. Because it is a stimulant, caffeine can als help imprve ne’s md. Research has als shwn that sme caffeinated drinks—specifically certain teas—have disease-fighting chemicals that can help the bdy fight a number f illnesses, including certain types f cancer.
In additin, as a type f mental stimulant, caffeine increases alertness, memry, and reactin speed. Because it fights fatigue, it facilitates perfrmance n tasks like driving, flying, and slving simple math prblems. And while it is true that caffeine can increase bld pressure, the effect is usually temprary and therefre nt likely t cause heart truble. This is especially true if caffeine is cnsumed in mderatin. Mrever, despite its nearly universal use, caffeine has rarely been abused. “With caffeine, veruse tends t stp itself,” says Jack Bergman, a specialist at Harvard Medical Schl. If yu cnsume t much, “yu get ... uncmfrtable, and yu dn’t want t cntinue.”
Caffeine’s behaviral effects are real, but mst ften mild. Getting that burst f energy, f curse, is why many f the wrld’s mst ppular drinks cntain caffeine. Whether it’s a student drinking cffee befre class r a businesspersn enjying tea with lunch, humankind’s favrite stimulant is at wrk everyday all ver the wrld.
    32. What is the main idea f paragraph 1?
