Gertrude B. Elin spent her early yuth in Manhattan. She attended senir high schl and had, in her wrds, “an unbelievable thirst fr knwledge”.
Influenced by the death f her grandfather, wh died f cancer, Elin entered Hunter Cllege at age 15 and graduated in chemistry at age 19. She had difficulty finding emplyment after graduatin, because many labratries refused t hire wmen chemists. She fund part-time jbs as a lab assistant and went back t schl at New Yrk University. Elin wrked as a high schl teacher fr a few years while finishing wrk n her master’s degree, which she earned in 1941.
The start f Wrld War II created mre pprtunities fr wmen. Elin was able t get a jb at Burrughs-Wellcme in 1944, where she began a 40-year partnership with Dr. Gerge H. Hitchings. Her thirst fr knwledge impressed Dr. Hitchings, and he permitted her t take n mre respnsibility.
Elin and Hitchings set ut n a curse f creating medicines by studying the chemical cmpsitin f diseased cells. Rather than relying n ld trial-and-errr methds, they used the differences in bichemistry between nrmal human cells and pathgens (病原体) t design medicines. In all, Elin btained 45 patents n medicine and was awarded 23 hnrary degrees (名誉学位).
In 1988, Elin received the Nbel Prize fr Medicine, tgether with Gerge H. Hitchings and Sir James Black.
