Sugar cane (甘蔗) cntains arund 10% sugar. But that means it cntains arund 90% nn-sugar — the material knwn as bagasse (甘蔗渣) which remains nce the sugar-bearing juice has been squeezed ut f the cane. Wrld prductin f cane sugar was 185m tnnes in 2017. That results in a lt f bagasse.
At the mment, mst f this is burned. Often, it fuels lcal generatrs, s it is nt wasted. But Zhu Hngli, a mechanical engineer at Nrtheastern University in Bstn thinks it can be put t better use. "With a bit f imprvement bagasse makes an excellent replacement fr the plastic used fr dispsable fd cntainers such as cffee cups," says Dr. Zhu.
Dr. Zhu is nt the first persn t have this idea. But previus attempts tended nt t survive cntact with liquids. She thught she culd vercme that by cmbining the bagasse pulp (浆状物) with anther bidegradable (可生物降解的) material. She discvered that the main reasn past effrts failed is that bagasse is cmpsed f shrt fibres which are unable t give resilience (韧性) t the finished prduct. She therefre sught t insert a suitably lng-fibred substance.
Bamb seemed t fit the bill. It grws quickly, degrades readily and has apprpriately lng fibres. When the researchers mixed a small amunt f bamb pulp int bagasse, they fund that the shrt and lng fibres cmbined with each ther clsely.
T put their new material thrugh its paces, Dr. Zhu and her clleagues fist pured ht il nt it and fund that their inventin shwed resistance t il. They als fund that when they made a cup ut f the stuff and filled it with water heated almst t the biling pint, the cup remained gd fr mre than tw hurs. Thugh this is nt as lng as a plastic cup wuld last it is lng enugh fr all practical purpses. One size desn’t fit all when chsing a schl. But parents can be affected by league tables. There are sme 2,500 independent schls in the UK and they vary wildly in fees, facilities, perfrmances and purpses. S parents shuld park their enthusiasm fr brand-name schls when fit is far mre imprtant.

Parents wh g nly n brand are ding their child harm.”
Whatever they say, it’s the academic success that parents invariably want. There’s nthing wrng with seeking ut high achievers. But a sensitive mid-level student might feel a failure in a schl with a strng emphasis n academic achievement. “Sme children are inspired by a bright peer grup,” says Hrgan, “but thers will feel anguished if they are buncing arund the bttm, especially if the bar is set high.”
S, what shuld parents lk fr? Lk fr the “value added”, says Beale — hw schls raise the relative academic perfrmance f pupils ver the years. Shrtlist half a dzen schls — visit at least fur, he advises. Open days are useful, but yu can als request an individual tur — seeing a schl in its everyday mde is mre revealing. And the best schls cmmunicate well with parents. “There will be rcky mments, but if yu get n with the staff, minr prblems can be reslved,” says Beale. “If yu dn’t feel yu culd have a gd relatinship with the schl, then walk away.” And then there’s the questin f culture fit. “Speak t current students and ask, 'D I want my sn r daughter t be like these children?’” says Beale.
