Others hld it themselves with a schl dinner in the schl hall. But they all invlve big parties and big dresses. Get a plan befre yu g!
    Clthes
Yu shuld dress up fr yur prm with frmal wear. Many teenagers cmmnly wear schl unifrms, but n prm night girls exchange their unifrms fr beautiful evening dresses and high heels (高跟鞋). Bys that are usually nly seen in jeans and trainers when nt at schl dress up in a suit with a tie and smart shes. The right hairstyle and make-up are imprtant t.
    Vehicles
Arriving at yur prm in large 4x4 vehicles is very ppular. But it is nt the standard answer. Tw girls with a sense f humur arrived at their schl prm bth dressed as Barbie. Did they arrive in a car? N, they travelled in a mre riginal style: their mthers made each girl a life-sized Barbie bx and they were trucked t the prm party in their bxes!
    Cst
The schl prm is big business. The average prm csts parents ver ₤200 per teenager. Of curse, nt all families wuld like t spend s much mney n their teenager’s prm. If yur family desn’t have the budget (预算) , yu may save yur pcket mney r wrk part-time t cver the cst. There are ppular jbs, including babysitting, shp wrk and wrking as a waiter r waitress.

It was decades ag nw, but it’s still ne f the mst memrable cnversatins f my life. On a lng, slw train heading nrth, with nthing t d but watch the rain, the man sitting ppsite began trying t talk t me. Like mst yung wmen wh have learned the hard way t be careful f strangers, I was unfriendly. But curisity tk ver when he said that he was just bred, and liked talking.
S that’s what we did fr hurs and hurs as the man turned ut t be quite talkative. When the train finally pulled in, we didn’t change numbers. Hwever, I still think abut it smetimes n lng, bring jurneys, befre getting a phne ut and scrlling silently like everyne else. It’s a rare persn wh can cheerfully break the scial rule abut nt talking t strangers withut any ill intentin, but life wuld be mre interesting if mre f us knew hw t d it.
And that’s why I can’t be as cynical as I prbably shuld be abut “Tube Chat” campaign launched t encurage Britns t talk t each ther. All anyne is being asked t d is t start a cnversatin they wuldn’t therwise have had — maybe with a friend frm whm they’ve been apart r a neighbr they dn’t knw.
Obviusly, it takes mre than a bit f small talk ver garden fences t unite strangers tgether. Mre peple live alne than did s a generatin ag, and the rise in freelancing (自由职业) means mre f us wrk alne t. We scialize increasingly thrugh screens, sending texts instead f bthering t call.
It’s true that the “Tube Chat” campaign f a few years back failed in its attempts t make Lndners talk t each ther n public transprt. But even city peple wh wuld nrmally die rather than make eye cntact with strangers still happily gather in large numbers by the Thames fr the New Year’s Eve firewrks. They wuld get a far better view at hme n televisin — it’s nt really abut the firewrks, but abut being part f smething cmmunal (公共的).
There’s n guarantee (保证) that this latest campaign t recnnect will succeed wherever thers have failed. But if there ever a mment t stp scial disbelief it may start a fire t warm a wrld that smetimes feels cld. Wherever my train friend is nw, I hpe he’s still talking.
    19. The authr intrduced her train friend t .
    A. share her mst memrable but bring jurney
    B. express her deep regret fr lsing tuch with him
    C. shw that talking t strangers can add interest t life
    D. explain why peple are becming indifferent

    A dubtfulB. supprtiveC. cnfusedD. disappinted
    21. The example f Lndners gathering fr the New Year’s Eve firewrks is used t shw that .
    A. “Tube Chat” failed in its attempts t unite strangers tgether
    B. it’s hard t break the scial rule abut nt talking t strangers

    D. “Tube Chat” made sme difference t recnnecting peple
    22. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Keep ur desire t cnnect.B. Avid talking t strangers.
    C. Shw respect fr scial disbeliefD. Scialize with ur friends.
    C
If yu seek happiness, then yu need t knw what happiness is fr yu. I dn’t believe there is ne universal definitin f happiness. Happiness is a very subjective emtin, accrding t me. Put tw peple in identical situatin: same amunt f mney, life experiences, etc. and yu can be pretty sure that they bth wuldn’t feel equally happy r equally sad. I believe this is s because there are tw kinds f happiness. There is ne kind f happiness, which is kind f universal and then there is the ther kind, which is very individual t each ne f us. It is this kind f happiness that I find mre interesting.
The secnd kind f happiness that I talk abut cmes frm ur expectatins ut f ur lives, which vary frm persn t persn. Fr example, a persn wh expects a lt ut f his r her life may find that happiness is hard t find. They are cnstantly in search f these things in life, which always seem t elude (逃避) them. Thse things may be mney r fame r pwer r any f the ther pursuits (追求) that humans have, but it wuld be likely that such peple are less likely t be happy, if their gals are nt met. In mst cases, even after their gals are met, they dn’t find happiness, because they seek mre—new gals, new wish lists, and it’s a seemingly never-ending prcess fr them!
On the ther hand, a persn wh takes life as it cmes alng and makes the best f each day is mre likely t be happy every day. They have n pressure r gals t ccupy their minds and they can achieve happiness frm the simple pleasures f everyday life, finding lve, making time fr the family and kids, seeing their kids grw, etc. Of curse, that desn’t mean that yu shuldn’t have any expectatins at all. Yu shuld keep thse expectatins reasnable and manageable.
    23. Which f the fllwing is the authr’s pinin accrding t Paragraph 1?
    A. Happiness has ne universal definitin.
    B. Every individual has his wn happiness.
    C. There are n peple wh are really happy.
    D. Happiness means having mney and pwer.
    24. Even if their gals are met, sme peple still dn’t feel happy because .
    A. they gave t much fr their gals
    B. they dn’t knw what happiness is
    C. they have new gals that need achieving
    D. they think sadness is a never-ending prcess
    25. What kind f persn is likely t be happy in the authr’s pinin?
    A. He wh has few expectatins.B. He wh has n pressure r gals.
    C. He wh has a great ambitin r dream.D. He wh can find fun frm his daily life.
    26. The authr writes this passage mainly t tell readers .
    A. the definitin f happiness
    B. the imprtance f happiness
    C. t enjy every day t the fullest
    D. t give up their dreams and be practical
    D
Scientists say they have develped a system that uses machine learning t predict when and where lightning will strike. Researchers reprt the system is able t predict lightning strikes up t 30 minutes befre they happen within a 30-kilmeter area. Lightning is a strng burst f electricity in the atmsphere. Since it carries an extremely pwerful electrical charge, it can cause very deadly results. Eurpean researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 peple are killed by lightning wrldwide each year. Fr this reasn, climate scientists have lng sught t develp methds t predict lightning.
The system tested in the experiments uses a cmbinatin f data frm weather statins and machine learning methds. The researchers develped a predictin mdel that was trained t recgnize weather cnditins that were likely t cause lightning.
The mdel was created with data cllected ver a 12-year perid frm 12 Swiss weather statins in cities and muntain areas. The data, related t fur main surface cnditins: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity (湿度) and wind speed, was placed int a unique machine learning algrithm (算法), which cmpared it t recrds f lightning strikes. Researchers say the algrithm was then able t learn the cnditins under which lightning happens.
The researchers test-ran the system several times. They fund that the system made predictins that prved crrect almst 80 percent f the time. “It can nw be used anywhere,” the Swiss Federal Institute f Technlgy said in a statement.
The researchers plan t keep develping the technlgy in partnership with a Eurpean effrt that aims t create a lightning prtectin prgram. The effrt is called the Eurpean Laser Lightning Rd prject. Scientists wrking n the prject are experimenting with a laser technlgy that culd smeday cntrl lightning activity, transferring lightning charges frm cluds t the grund. They hpe that such technlgy can ne day be used as prtectin against lightning strikes. Pssible uses culd be at statins, airprts r places where large crwds gather.
    27. Why was the system develped?
    A. T keep track f lightning deaths.
    B. T meet peple’s curisity abut lightning.
    C. T prtect peple frm lightning strikes.
    D. T take advantage f the energy f lightning.
    28. What is special abut the system?
    A. It cllects data samples frm arund the wrld.
    B. It invlves the use f a machine learning algrithm.
    C. It was test-run several times befre being put int use.
    D. Its success wes greatly t a Eurpean effrt.
    29. What will the researchers d in the next stage?
    A. Prevent the frmatin f lightning.B. Get lightning striking under cntrl.
    C. Inspire the study f a laser technlgy.D. Raise the accuracy f lightning predictin.
    30. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. A system f Cntrlling LightningB. A Thery f Emplying Lightning
    C. A Methd f Frecasting LightningD. A Mdel f Creating Lightning
