“My mther, wh wasn’t well-educated, had t wrk fr ₹500 per mnth.” But what hit her hardest was her struggle t cntinue her educatin. The memry f her grade 7 teacher refusing t allw her t attend classes ver unpaid schl fees still hurts.
One day in 2007, while travelling with tw visually impaired(有缺陷的) cllege students by bus, she heard them talk abut hw difficult it was fr them t cntinue their educatin. “I remembered my wn struggle t finish my studies s I seized the pprtunity t help them.”

Researchers believe they have accurately estimated Antarctica’s Weddell seal ppulatin fr the first time—using images frm space and the eyes f citizen scientists.
Previus estimates f their ppulatin were “mre back-f-the-envelpe type calculatins”, said Dr. Michelle LaRue, a prfessr f New Zealand’s University f Canterbury. “The previus research was dne by traditinal surveyrs, but yu can’t physically get t the entire Antarctic cntinent all at ne time,” she said.
The results were “inaccurate”, s in 2016 LaRue created the first estimate f the seals’ baseline ppulatin, using satellite imagery and the keen eyes f 330,000 curius vlunteers. “We cmbined the imagery with a web platfrm t cnduct a citizen science campaign t find ut where seals are present, their abundance, and the envirnmental factrs that influence their habitat preferences,” LaRue said.
They discvered that, at the time the satellite images were taken in 2021, the glbal ppulatin was actually just 40% f the 800,000 animals previusly estimated. The study, published in late 2021, estimated that there were abut 202,000 sub-adult and adult female Weddell seals in Antarctica. Male seals were generally nt captured in the satellite images because they were typically under the ice, guarding their territries, LaRue added.
The study als fund that Weddell seals lived n abut 1% f the ice and were picky abut where they settled. The prject relied heavily n vlunteers t search the satellite images fr signs f seals. Participants were given images f an area in Antarctica t scur and asked t tick a bx saying if they believed they culd see a seal r nt. The mre peple t click yes, the mre efficient the narrwing dwn f habitats became.
“The methd is nw being emplyed by ther scientists t help determine the ppulatin f walrus(海象) in the Arctic,” LaRue said, “Lking at brader ecsystems and the relatinships between animals and their envirnment was imprtant in the lng run, but t d that, it was helpful t have ppulatin guides fr single species.” Once scientists have that infrmatin, they “can start adding it all tgether and putting tgether the puzzle a little bit better”.
8. What is Paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A. Limitatin f previus studies. B. Significance f previus estimates.
C. Inspiratin fr LaRue’s research.D. Difficulty in explring the Antarctica.

The schl hallway between classes may seem disrdered. But there’s likely mre rder in the crwd than yu think. In a heavy crwd with peple ging in ppsite directins, there’s ften a pattern. Peple tend t srt themselves int lanes(队伍) that run parallel t each ther. If a space is wide enugh, tw grups f peple passing each ther head-n will frm multiple lanes. Each lane will be abut the width f tw peple. If tw grups crss paths at right angles, they still frm lanes. But these lanes behave differently. Each persn stays in their lane, but the lane shifts t the side as the grups crss. Attempts t direct the crwd may nt help, and it will mess up this natural flw. This slws everybdy dwn.
Tim Rgers and Karl Bacik reprted these results in a jurnal. They began wrking n crwds during the pandemic. They were wrking t design spaces where peple culd stay scially distanced t prevent viral spread. Decades ag, Dirk Helbing, a physicist in Switzerland, created a mathematical mdel that describes the directin a walker plans t g. Rgers and Bacik added factrs related t crwd patterns t Helbing’s sftware. The resulting mdel describes lane frmatin as a result f tw prcesses.
The first prcess is drift. As sn as a line f peple starts t frm headed ne way, thers ging the same way are drawn t it. This encurages lane frmatin. The secnd ne is diffusin(扩散) which causes peple t spread ut frm a crwded space. In a crwd, the end result is lanes abut tw peple wide—just big enugh t resist diffusin.
The mdel’s predictins std the test f a real crwd. The researchers filmed a grup f 70 peple walking thrugh an pen space. Peple cnsistently rdered themselves int lanes as expected, while past wrk has shwn that crash and ther prblems are mre cmmn where mre rutes intersect(交叉) . Public spaces can be designed t help prevent such disasters. The takeaway: When peple are traveling tw ways, trust the wisdm f crwds. When there’s a three-way r fur-way intersectin, watch ut.
12. What is Paragraph 1 mainly abut?
A. The benefits f attempting t direct the crwd.
B. The different behaviur habits f human beings.
C. The autmatic frmatin f a pattern in a crwd.
D. The pssible cause f mess in the schl hallway.
13. What d we knw abut Rgers and Bacik’s research?
A. It lacks a clear cnclusin.B. It is aimed at detecting viruses.
C. It is cmpleted by bservatin.D. It is based n previus research.
14. What can we learn frm the tw prcesses?
A. Diffusin causes increase f crwd density.
B. Lanes may nt be erased when wide enugh.
C. Fllwing thers ccurs in ppsite directins.
D. Mving n the right cntributes t lane frmatin.
15. What can be inferred frm the passage?
A. The mdel’s predictins failed t be prven by the real situatin.
B. The natural flw f crwds can speed up if directed intentinally.
C. The width f lanes in a crwded space is determined by diffusin.
D. Public spaces with multiple intersecting rutes are mre dangerus.
