Sasha Olsen went n a trip last summer with her family t Vietnam and Japan. She was frightened at the cean’s pllutin levels and dying sea animals.
“We went n this trip and I was s excited,” said Sasha. She is 10 years ld and lives in Bal Harbur, Flrida. “But when I saw the way the ceans had becme, I gt anxius. I wanted t knw why things were this way but culdn’t find an answer.”
When she returned hme t Bal Harbur, she grew even mre disturbed. She learned hw sme f the beaches in Suth Flrida had been clsed by The Health Department because the water had t much bacteria in it.
Sasha sught the help f her cusin, Narmina Aliyev. Aliyev is 23 years ld and a recent graduate f Nva Sutheastern University with a bachelr’s degree in business. Tgether, they started a nnprfit Iwantmyceanback in Octber.
Originally, the grup started small, with friends cming tgether n the weekends t clean the beaches in Bal Harbur. Millins f bees have been destryed t help cntain the spread f the deadly mite, which reappeared in the cuntry last week near the Prt f Newcastle. If the mite became established in Australia, it culd cst the natin’s hney industry mre than $70 millin a year, in additin t its effect n the crps that rely n bee pllinatin.
The mites, which are reddish-brwn and abut the size f a sesame seed, can spread frm bee t bee and thrugh beekeeping equipment. If left untreated, the mites culd kill an entire clny f hney bees, the gvernment has said.
