On April 6, 1909, six men claimed their place as the first explrers t reach the Nrth Ple. Their leader was Navy cmmander Rbert E. Peary. He phtgraphed the ther men as they held up flags. One f them was Matthew Hensn, the nly African American explrer f the Arctic at that time. The ther fur were Inuit hunters.
Many explrers had tried t reach the ple but Peary surpassed (超越) them thrugh clever planning. He had made fur expeditins (远征) int the Arctic. Each time, he learned hw t plan better fr the next trip. He als gave credit t Hensn, wh had jined him n three ther Arctic expeditins. The team needed the skills and knwledge f the Inuit, and Hensn was fluent in their language. Als, “He is prbably a better dg-driver than any ther man except the best Inuit hunters,” Peary said.
The travel was hard. Biting winds blew, and temperatures drpped t minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit. “Freezing f the whle frnt part f the face is an rdinary ccurrence,” Hensn said, “The skin keeps peeling ff and freezing until the face is like raw beef.” They culd lse fingers r tes. They had nly 50 t 55 days t cmplete the last leg f the jurney befre spring wuld melt the ice. An island spider decides which f its three kinds f webs t make depending n the lcatin. Spiders usually make nly ne kind f web, but the Wendilgarda galapagensis species-fund nly n Ccs Island, ff the western cast f Central America—can make three different webs.

Dark Ctras at the Califrnia Academy f Sciences in San Francisc wndered whether this flexibility indicates that the spider is underging speciatin (物种形成), branching int three species, each with unique behaviurs and expliting a different fd surce. S with his clleagues he ran genetic analyses n 142 f the spiders.
T their surprise, the results suggested they all belnged t the same species. This means they haven’t genetically diversified since they arrived at the vlcanic island up t 2 millin years ag.
The researchers then marked the 2-millimetre-lng spiders and mved them t different lcatins n the island t track their behaviur. Fr example, they tk water-web-making spiders away frm water surces and placed them in high bushes nearby. Again, the researchers were surprised t see that the spiders ften built a new web with the architecture suited t the new lcatin.
