Nature has inspired researchers t develp a rbtic gripper (抓取器) that behaves like an elephant’s trunk (象鼻) t pick up and put dwn bjects withut breaking them. The University f New Suth Wales (UNSW) Sydney researchers said the technlgy culd be widely applied in industries where breakable bjects are handled, such as agriculture, fd and the scientific explratin industries — even fr human rescue peratins.
Dr Thanh Nh D, UNSW Medical Rbtics Lab directr, said the gripper culd reach cnsumers in the next 12 t 16 mnths if his team fund an industry partner. “Our new sft fabric gripper is thin, flat, lightweight and can grip varius bjects — even in narrw ces — fr example, a pen inside a tube,” Dr D said. “This gripper als has an imprved real-time frce sensr which is 15 times mre sensitive than traditinal designs and detects the grip strength required t prevent damage t bjects it’s handling. These animals can d this because f a cmbinatin f highly sensitive rgans, the sense f tuch and the strength f thusands f muscles withut bne — fr example, an elephant's trunk has up t 40,000 muscles. S, we wanted t cpy these gripping abilities,” he said.
Dr D said the researchers’ new sft gripper was an imprvement n existing designs that had disadvantages that limited their applicatin. “Many sft grippers are based n human hand-like structures with multiple inward-bending fingers, but this makes them unsuitable t grip bjects that are strangely shaped, heavy r big, r bjects smaller r larger than the gripper’s pening. Many existing sft grippers als lack the ability t prvide sensry infrmatin and flexibility, which means yu can’t use them with breakable bjects r in narrw ces,” he said. “Our technlgy can grip lng bjects and get them frm narrw ces, as well as get int hles t pick up bjects.”
    12. What is Dr Thanh Nh D’s team trying t d at the mment?
    A. Perfect the gripper. B. Partner with agriculturalists.
    C. Put the gripper n the market.D. Increase their new prducts’sales.
    13. What is a characteristic f this rbtic gripper?
    A. It is quite hard. B. It can change t meet needs.
    C. It cmes in different shapes.D. It is able t send real-time warnings.
    14. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
    A. Hw the researchers carried ut the study.
    B. What the researchers want t achieve.
    C. Where the researchers gt the idea.
    D. Why the researchers lve nature.
    15. What is the prblem with the existing grippers?
    A. They are very weak. B. They are big and heavy.
    C. They have limited applicatins. D. They wrk differently frm human hands.
