It’s perhaps the wrld’s mst famus underwater attractin that remained in film and in legend: the Titanic. But nw experts say the cean liner, nce a wnder f the high seas, is falling t pieces.
Capt. Alfred McLaren, the scientist wh in July led the mst recent expeditin t the ship’s underwater grave, said his team saw clear signs f the accelerating damage f the wreck (残骸). There was damage likely caused by rust and sea life, and the captain’s cabin had cllapsed.
“I was abslutely astnished,” McLaren said.
Wrse still, the fallen mast (桅杆) that crushed the ship’s deck is believed by many t be the result f an unapprved salvage (打捞) peratin. “It was almst depressing t see hw quickly she was getting wrse,” McLaren says. “I wuld be really surprised if there’s very much standing up frm the bttm, tw decades frm nw.”
Ed Kamuda, wh runs the Titanic Histrical Sciety in Springfield, Mass., says adventure turists ― wh pay $36,000 each t visit the wreck ― are als cntributing t the destructin f it.
“This is smething I expected. I just didn’t expect it t happen s quickly,” Kamuda said. “Peple are ging dwn just as an eg trip t say ‘I was there.’ All this takes a fare n the ship.”
The Titanic has sat at the bttm f the Atlantic since it sank after hitting an iceberg n its maiden vyage n April 14, 1912. Mre than 1,500 peple died that night. The ship came t rest at the bttm f the freezing Nrth Atlantic, mre than 2 miles beneath the waves. The wreck was discvered in 1985, and since then it has been repeatedly visited by treasure hunters.
But still sme scientists say thse divers, and ther thrill seekers are nt necessarily t blame fr the Titanic’s current prblems.
Capt. Craig McLean f the Natinal Oceanic and Atmspheric Administratin went n an expeditin t the Titanic in June as part f a gvernment study that is mnitring the cnditin f the ship. He says it’s unclear what part f the damage is frm Mther Nature and which is frm human nature.
“It’s t early and there isn’t enugh evidence t put ur fingers n anything,” McLean said.
Regardless, mst agree there’s little that can be dne fr this mst famus f wrecks. And sn, the mighty Titanic culd well be lst again.
McLaren expected that in twenty years _______.
Only a minr part f the wreck wuld remain as it is
The wreck wuld be getting wrse at a faster speed
Only salvage peratin with the purpse f research wuld be apprved
The wreck wuld be cmpletely destryed by unapprved treasure hunters
What is the turist’s purpse f visiting the wreck, accrding t Kamuda?
T cntribute t the breaking dwn f the Titanic.
T help finance the preservatin f the Titanic.
T satisfy their curisity and adventurusness.
T better understand the histry f the Titanic.
Craig McLean is ne f the scientists wh believe _______.
Visitrs shuld nt be prhibited frm the Titanic and ther famus wrecks
The influence f the thrill seekers n the wreck will finally be determined
The gvernment shuld cntribute mre t the mnitring f the Titanic
The damage f the Titanic is nt necessarily attributed t the adventure turists
The authr is mst likely t agree that the future f the Titanic is _______.
    prmising B. discuraging C. cntrllable D. vague
    C
In department stres and clsets all ver the wrld, they are waiting. Their utward appearance seems rather appealing because they cme in a variety f styles, patterns, materials, and clrs. But they are eventually the biggest deceptin (欺骗) that exists in the fashin industry tday. What are they? They are high heels ― a wman’s wrst enemy (whether she knws it r nt). High heel shes are the dwnfall f mdern sciety. Fashin myths have led wmen t believe that they are mre beautiful r stylish fr wearing heels, but in reality, heels succeed in creating shrt as well as lng term trubles. Wmen shuld fight the high heel industry by refusing t use r purchase them in rder t save the wrld frm unnecessary physical and psychlgical suffering.
Fr the sake f fairness, it must be nted that there is a psitive side t high heels. First, heels are excellent fr aerating lawns (草坪通气). Anyne wh has ever wrn heels n grass knws what I am talking abut. A simple trip arund the yard in a pair f thse babies gets rid f all the need t call fr a lawn care specialist, and prvides the perfect-sized hles t give any lawn xygen withut all thse messy blcks f dirt lying arund. Secnd, heels are quite functinal fr defending against ptential enemies, wh can easily be scared away by threatening them with a pair f these sharp, deadly fashin items.
Regardless f such practical uses fr heels, the fact remains that wearing high heels is harmful t ne’s physical health. Talk t any pdiatrist (足病医生), and yu will hear that the majrity f their business cmes frm high-heel-wearing wmen. High heels are knwn t cause prblems such as defrmed feet and trn tenails. The risk f severe back prblems and twisted r brken ankles is three times higher fr a high heel wearer than fr a flat she wearer. Wearing heels als creates the threat f getting a heel caught in a narrw sidewalk gap and being thrwn t the grund ― pssibly breaking a nse, back, r neck. And f curse, after wearing heels fr a day, any wman knws she can lk frward t a night f pain as she tries t cmfrt her aching feet.
    28. Wmen dn’t take the disadvantages f high heels t seriusly because f _______.
    A. their attempt t shw ff their status
    B. the rich variety f high heel styles
    C. their wish t imprve their appearance
    D. the multi-functinal use f high heels
    29. What’s the authr’s tne in presenting the psitive sides f high heel shes?
    A. irnicB. favrable C. sympatheticD. bjective
    30. The writer uses “thse babies” (Paragraph 2) t refer t high heels _______.
    A. t shw their fragile characteristic
    B. t shw wmen’s affectin fr them
    C. t emphasize their small size
    D. t indicate their trendy appearance
    31. It can be inferred frm the passage that wmen shuld _______.
    A. refuse t buy the prducts f the fashin industry
    B. g t a pdiatrist regularly fr advice
    C. avid fllwing fashin t clsely
    D. see thrugh the very nature f fashin myths
    D
Carried by the wind, dust particles (微粒) frm places such as the Sahara Desert can flat halfway arund the wrld befre settling t the grund. As the plastics abandned by humans break dwn int tiny pieces in the envirnment, they, t, travel thrugh the atmsphere. Nw scientists are a step clser t understanding hw these micrplastics travel in the glbe ― bth lcally and n lng-distance flights.
Researchers spent mre than a year cllecting micrplastics frm 11 natinal parks and wilderness areas in the western U.S. They examined the particles that settled n dry days and thse that fell alng with rain r snw. In additin t making clear hw micrplastics mve arund, the results, published n Thursday in Science, reveal the seriusness f the prblem: mre than 1 millin kilgrams f micrplastics ― the weight f 120 millin t 300 millin plastic water bttles ― fall n prtected lands in the cuntry’s western regin each year.
The new findings add t scientists’ cncern ver micrplastic pllutin’s ptential impacts n the envirnment and human health. “We’re nt suppsed t breathe in this material,” says Steve Allen, a micrplastics researcher at the University f Strathclyde in Sctland, wh was nt invlved in the new study. Plastics in the envirnment “carry all srts f pesticides (农药), heavy metals and all the ther chemicals that we’ve made ver time,” he adds. “They’re ging t carry them directly int ur lungs.”
Since their discvery in ceans in the 1970s, micrplastics ― which can be as large as a grain f rice r smaller than a particle f dust ― have been fund nearly everywhere researchers have lked: in cities, in Arctic snw, n remte muntaintps. Their presence in areas distant frm the place where human live has pinted t them being carried by winds.
What d the scientists further understand nw?
    A. Why Sahara Desert is expanding t the suth f Africa.
    B. Hw plastic particles travel n the wind.
    C. Why it is hard fr plastics t break dwn.
    D. Hw dust particles are spreading thrugh the wind.
    33. What d we knw abut the new study?
    A. The results shwed the amunt f micrplastics is huge.
    B. Researchers cllected micrplastics acrss the U.S.
    C. Researchers fcused n plastic particles in dry days.
    D. Numerus plastic water bttles were fund each year.
    34. What des Steve Allen say abut plastics?
    A. They shuld be recycled.
    B. They d harm t weather.
    C. They can be used t make all srts f pesticides.
    D. They carry harmful chemicals t human lungs.
    35. What wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    A. Dust Particles Is Harmful t Our Lungs
    B. The Envirnment Is Threatened by Plastics
    C. Micrplastics Are Falling frm the Sky
    D. Micrplastics D Harm t Health

Teenagers are spending mre mney than ever. Just last year, 31.6 millin teens spent 155 billin, accrding t the Nrth-brk, Illinis-based market research grup Teenage Research Unlimited. 36
Shcked at hw much mney kids spend? Maybe yu haven’t checked the price tags lately n sme f the yunger generatin’s must-haves. T sme, such luxurius spending n the changeable yung might seem unbearable. 37 Timthy Marshall, an assciate prfessr f develpmental psychlgy at Christpher Newprt University in Virginia, analyzed the widespread phenmenn after sme research.
One factr is surely the sheer pwer f marketing thrugh mass media. Teenagers are expsed t an estimated 3,000 advertisements each day. Cmbine the ads with prgramming itself, like the fashin-, music- and skin-filled shws n MTV, and yu’ve gt a large number f messages telling kids what they shuld wn if they want t fit in.
Many wrking parents prbably cmpensate by spending mney n their kids. 38 But als, spending mney is ften mre cnvenient in ur fast-paced sciety than ging t baseball games r ther activities.
Fr many families, f curse, keeping up with their children’s cstly demands fr designer clthing, CDs, and cncert tickets is a financial impssibility. Marshall says, even fr thse families wh can affrd such luxurius spending, striking a cmprmise between spiling the kids and denying them is tricky, but pssible.
39 Instead f just giving children the tys r clthing they desire, give them an allwance and shw them hw they can save up fr whatever they want. And dn’t be afraid t just say n. Mst f the parents are wrking nine-t-five r even wrking vertime t make ends meet. Therefre, shulder the respnsibility f instructing the kids t tell right frm wrng, and develping healthy habits f spending mney is f great imprtance. 40

Increasingly, ur wrld is being designed by machines and fr machines.
