Last week my yungest sn and I visited my father at his new hme in Tucsn, Arizna. He mved there a few years ag, and I was eager t see his new place and meet his friends.
My earliest memries f my father are a tall, handsme, successful man devted t his wrk and his family, but uncmfrtable with his children. As a child I lved him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I gt straight A’s and unhappy with my byfriends if their fathers were nt as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went ut with him n weekends, I used t struggle t think up things t say, feeling n guard.
On the first day f my visit, we went ut with ne f my father’s friends fr lunch at an utdr café. We talked alng that afternn, did sme shpping, ate n the street table, and laughed ver my sn’s funny facial expressins. Gne was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Wh was this persn I knew as my father, wh seemed s friendly and interesting t be arund? What had held him back befre?
The next day dad pulled ut his childhd pictures and tld me quite a few stries abut his wn childhd. Althugh ur times tgether became easier ver the years, I never felt clser t him at that mment. Jim suffered heart prblems. In cnversatin he expressed little jy and it seemed that his life was drawing t a clse.
When his heart prblems led t peratin, Jim went thrugh it successfully, and a full recvery was expected. Within days, hwever, his heart was nt beating prperly. Jim was rushed back t peratin, but nthing was fund t explain the cause f his illness. He died n the perating table n the day befre his 48th birthday.
Dr. Bruce Smller, a psychlgis(t 心理学家), had had many cnversatins with him, and the mre he learned,
the stranger he realized Jim's case was. When Jim was a child, his father, a teacher, suffered a heart attack and stayed hme t recver. One mrning Jim asked his father t lk ver his hmewrk, prmising t cme hme frm schl at nn t pick it up. His father agreed, but when Jim returned his father had died. Jim's father was 48.
“I think all his life Jim believed he killed his father,” Dr. Smller says. “He felt that if he had nt asked him t lk at his hmewrk, his father wuld have lived. Jim had been trubled by the idea. The peratin was the trial
(判决)he had expected fr frty years.” Smller believes that Jim willed himself nt t live t the age f 48.
Jim's case shws the pwerful rle that attitude plays in physical health, and that childhd experiences prduce far-reaching effect n the health f grwn-ups. Althugh mst cases are less direct than Jim's, studies shw that childhd events, besides genes, may well cause such midlife diseases as cancer, heart disease and mental illness.
Jim was sent back t peratin because .
    A. his heart didn't wrk wellB. he expected a full recvery
    C. his life was drawing t a clseD. the first ne wasn't well perfrmed
What made Dr. Smller feel strange abut Jim's case?
Jim died at a yung age.
Jim died n the perating table.
Bth Jim and his father died f the same disease.
Jim's death is clsely cnnected with his father's.
Frm Smller's wrds, we can infer that .
Jim's father cared little abut his study
Smller agreed that Jim did kill his father
Jim thught he wuld be punished sme day
Smller believed Jim wuldn't live t the age f 48
    Which f the fllwing culd have strng effect n ne's physical health accrding t the text? A.a, b, dB.a, b, eC.a, c, eD.b, c, d

When a rather dirty, prly dressed persn kneels at yur feet and puts ut his hands t beg fr a few cins, d yu hurry n, nt knwing what t d, r d yu feel sad and hurriedly hand ver sme mney? What shuld ur attitude t beggars be? There can be n questin that the wrld is full f terribly sad stries. It must be terrible t have n idea where ur next meal is ging t cme frm. It seems cruel nt t give sme mney t beggars.
Certainly, mst f the wrld’s great religins (宗教) rder us t be pen-hearted and share what we have with thse less frtunate than urselves. But has the wrld changed? Maybe what was mrally (道德地) right in the ld days, when ne knew exactly wh in the village had suffered misfrtune and needed help, is n lnger the best idea. Quite a few peple will nt give t beggars. Let us lk at their arguments.
First, sme believe that many city beggars dress up n purpse t lk pitiable and actually make a gd living frm begging. Giving t beggars nly encurages this srt f evil (恶行). Secndly, there is the wrry that the mney yu give will be spent n beer, wine r drugs. Thirdly, there is the pinin that there is n real excuse fr begging. One might be pr, but that is n reasn fr lsing ne’s sense f pride and self-dependence.
Related t this is the pinin that the prblem shuld be dealt with by the gvernment rather than rdinary peple. Sme peple think beggars shuld g t the lcal gvernment department and receive help.
It is hard t cme t any final cnclusin: there are varius cases and we must deal with them differently. A few cins can save a life in sme situatins, and even if the mney is wasted, that des nt take away the mral gdness f the giver.
What is mainly discussed in the passage?
    A. Mral deeds f peple.B. Religius activities f the church.
    C. Mral gdness f the giver.D. Arguments n giving t beggars.
What can we infer frm the sentence “But has the wrld changed?” in the secnd paragraph?
Peple n lnger knw wh suffers misfrtune in the village.
Sme peple will nt d what was mrally right in the past.
We dn’t meet with thse wh need help any mre.
Nw it is the gvernment’s duty t help the beggars.
Which f the fllwing is NOT mentined in the passage?
Sme peple dress up t pretend t be beggars.
Sme beggars want mney t help their children g t schl.
Sme beggars use the mney t buy drugs.
Sme beggars have n excuse fr begging.
In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that it is hard t cme t any final cnclusin, because .
    A. the cases can be s differentB. there are s many beggars
    C. there is s much mney wastedD. there are s many different arguments

The next time yu pick up a glass, ntice the place where yur fingers have tuched it. D yu see patterns f these lines? 36 If yu lk clsely at the tips f yur fingers, yu will see the same raised patterns n yur skin.
Fingerprints( 指 纹 ) begin t frm lng befre a baby is brn. 37 Even if we injure ur fingers, the lines f ur fingerprints grw back the same way, as lng as the injury isn’t very serius.
N tw peple have the same fingerprints—nt even twins. Because fingerprints are unique, they can be used t identify peple. 38 Fingerprints can als act like a key, unlcking a phne if a persn’s fingerprint matches ne that has been stred in the devices.
39 They might help us imprve ur sense f tuch. Or they might help tell a dctr whether a patient is prperly absrbing the medicine they’ve been given. Als they might help plice slve crimes(破案). If a thief stle gld watches frm a stre and left his fingerprints behind, the plice can check thse fingerprints. They cmpare them t their database t find wh has a matching fingerprint.
Just imagine ur life withut fingerprints! It’d be difficult fr us t read infrmatin and interact with
whatever we’re tuching r hlding in ur hands. 40Hw d yu feel when yur fingers are interacting with the buttns f the cmputer while wearing glves? Or did yu find difficulties in unlcking yur phne?
    Thse are yur fingerprints.
    Why d we need fingerprints?
Why dn’t peple have the same fingerprints?
Having n fingerprints is like wearing glves!
Well, a fingerprint is frmed when a finger makes cntact with a surface.
Investigatrs lk fr fingerprints left t help figure ut wh had been there.
