Optical(光学的)fiber is a flexible line f glass capable f carrying infrmatin ver lng distances. Scientists Dr. Rbert Maurer. Dr. Peter Schultz, and Dr. Dnald Keck invented the first lw-lss ptical fiber in 1970. Inspired by their belief that infrmatin culd be sent thrugh light, they spent fur years experimenting with different kinds f glass until they succeeded.
Optical fiber was an answer t cnsumer demand fr increased bandwidth (带宽). Beginning in the 1960s. the telecmmunicatins industry realized that the existing cpper wire infrastructure(基础设施)culd n lnger keep up as cmmunicatins traffic increased. Optical fiber changed the telecmmunicatins industry greatly because it, unlike cpper, ffered limitless bandwidth. Because f thse qualities, ptical fiber has becme the backbne f the netwrks that we use tday t send vice, data, and vide arund the wrld.
The first ptical fiber was celebrated fr having a ttal attenuatin f 17dB/km. Tday, there are ptical fibers with attenuatin as lw as 0.17dB/km, which translates t signal lss being 100 times better than the first ne. As a result, ptical fiber is the preferred medium fr fast, reliable cmmunicatins netwrks.
Tday, ptical fiber prvides the infrastructure fr bradband cnnectivity all arund the wrld. Optical fiber supprts all the cmmunicatins and interactive technlgy we use every day.
