W: Good afternoon, everyone. Welcome to the first lecture of our new course in Positive Psychology. While some people may associate psychology with looking at what’s wrong with us, and at what problems we have, there is much more to psychology than that. Positive Psychology, for example, looks at how to help people become happier.
This lecture begins with a question: what makes a happy life? According to Csikszentmihalyi, a famous psychologist of the theory of flow, happiness is not caused by external events or things that happen to us. If we want happiness, we have to actively look for it. He believed that our happiest moments happen when we are totally focused on what we are doing. Csikszentmihalyi got the inspiration for his theory of flow when he noticed how artists worked in a studio. They completely lost track of time, they didn’t notice they were hungry or tired, and they could work for hours without stopping. The best way to explain it is that it is like being in a river and the flow of the water carries you away.
For the rest of this lecture, I will explore this theory of flow in more detail.
    Right, let’s get started.

A few years ago, the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved jogging (慢跑), so I was really happy when I found out the apartment they had rented for us was next to Central Park.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park,I didn’t usually take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But this one morning my wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home so I put a $10 bill in my back pocket.
It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running, another jogger bumped into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, the warning of from others hit me. “It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became alarmed so I checked my pocket. I started shouting and demanding that he gave me the $10 bill. I’m not usually a hot-headed person, but I really lost my temper at that moment. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife the story. “You won’t believe what happened to me.” I started with pride. She immediately interrupted (插话).” I know you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.

26.How would the author feel after his wife mentioned the money on the table?
A.Confident and proud. B.Ashamed and upset.
C.Annoyed and curious. D.Pleasant and satisfied.
27.What can we learn from the author’s story?
A.Things are not always what you think they are.

C.Some problems can be solved by force.
D.Never bump into a stranger while jogging.

Playing tennis regularly could help keep people off death, but football, rugby and running may not help people to live longer, a study suggests.
A study followed more than 80,000 people for an average of nine years to find out if certain sports protected them against early death. It found that people who played racket sports regularly were the least likely to die over the study period, reducing their individual risk by 47 percent compared with people who did no exercise. Swimmers also reduced their chance of death by 28 percent, aerobics (有氧运动) fans by 27 percent and cyclists by 15 percent. Yet running appeared to have no impact at all on dying early, and neither did playing football or rugby.
Scientists say the difference may lie in the social aspect which goes alongside sports like tennis and squash (壁球), which often involve clubs and organized activities outside of the game. It means that people often have larger social net-works and tend to keep up activities into later life, both of which are proven to be good for health.
In contrast, people who play team sports often do not move onto a new sport once their teams break up for family, or injury reasons. They become watchers rather than participants in their chosen activity.
The researchers found that playing racket sports was associated with a 56 percent lower risk from heart death. Similarly, swimmers lowered their heart disease or stroke risk by 41 percent, and people who took part in activities like aerobics, dance or gymnastics lowered their risk by 36 percent. But again running, football and rugby had no significant impact on heart deaths.
However, other experts argue that this study must not be misinterpreted as showing that running and football do not protect against heart disease. In this study both runners and footballers had a lower rate of death from heart disease.
28.Which sport has hardly any impact on protecting people against early death?
    A.Cycling. B.Swimming.
    C.Rugby. D.Tennis.
29.According to the study, which makes a big difference in keeping healthy?
A.Playing basketball with their friends occasionally.
    B.Watching football games every day.
C.Taking up gymnastics and joining a club.
D.Doing running in the park every day.
30.What is considered more important to people's health?
    A.Social networks. B.Staying at home.
    C.Physical examinations. D.Setting up families.
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Thousands of people participated in a 9-year research.
B.Study finds playing tennis helps people live longer.
C.It is wrong to say running has no impact on heart disease.
D.There are differences between racket sports and team games.

The Himalayan Mountains are home to the highest peak in Mount Everest. Now the first complete study of this remote region shows that its glaciers(冰川)lost billions of tons of ice from 2000 to 2016.
This is the first comprehensive look at what's happened to glaciers in the Himalaya over a 40-year time, said lead author Joshua Masurer.
“Our study shows a strong signal of glacier ice loss linked to rising temperatures from climate change,” Maurer says. As much as quarter of the regions ice has been lost, he said, “Temperatures in the region have risen one degree, and one degree was indeed enough to produce such a great loss of glacier ice.”
The signal showing Himalayan ice loss linked to rising temperatures would not be so clear if it weren't for the U.S satellites that photographed the region. Declassified(解密的)photos from those satellites were turned into 3-D models to show what the glaciers' elevations(海拔高度)and sizes were in the 1970s, Maurer said. Those were then compared to more recent complex NASA satellite photos that show changing elevations of the ice over time.
The ice and snow in the region are the source for Asia's great rivers. The study did not include the huge neighbouring ranges of high mountains, but other studies suggest that similar melting is under way there as well.
This melting means flooding and the creation of many glacial lakes. In May 2012, one such flood killed over 60 people in villages near Pokhara, Nepal; it also destroyed houses. Some 800 million people depend in part on rivers from Himalayan glaciers for irrigation, making electricity, and drinking water. The more rapid melting appears to increase the river water during warm seasons, but scientists say that will decrease within decades as the glaciers lose mass.

    【答案】32.A 33.C 34.B 35.A
根据第三段“Our study shows a strong signal of glacier ice loss linked to rising temperatures from climate change”(我们的研究显示了一个强烈的信号,冰川的冰流失与气候变化导致的气温上升有关)可知,喜马拉雅山脉冰川融化的原因在于气候变化导致的温度上升。故选A项。
根据第四段“The signal showing Himalayan ice loss linked to rising temperatures would not be so clear if it weren't for the U.S satellites that photographed the region. Declassified(解密的)photos from those satellites were turned into 3-D models to show what the glaciers' elevations(海拔高度)and sizes were in the 1970s, Maurer said. Those were then compared to more recent complex NASA satellite photos that show changing elevations of the ice over time.”(如果不是美国的卫星拍摄了这一地区,显示喜马拉雅冰川消融与气温上升有关的信号就不会如此清晰。
根据第五段“The ice and snow in the region are the source for Asia's great rivers. The study did not include the huge neighbouring ranges of high mountains, but other studies suggest that similar melting is under way there as well.”(这个地区的冰雪是亚洲几条大河的源头。
根据最后一段“This melting means flooding and the creation of many glacial lakes. In May 2012, one such flood killed over 60 people in villages near Pokhara, Nepal; it also destroyed houses. Some 800 million people depend in part on rivers from Himalayan glaciers for irrigation, making electricity, and drinking water. The more rapid melting appears to increase the river water during warm seasons, but scientists say that will decrease within decades as the glaciers lose mass.”(这种融化意味着洪水和许多冰川湖的形成。 故选A项。

根据后文“For example, a travel partner can provide practical support and celebrate in the rewards of first-hand experience with unfamiliar locations and cultures.(例如,旅行伙伴可以提供实际支持,并庆祝亲身体验陌生地点和文化的收获)”可知,后文提到旅行伙伴可以对你提供实际支持,并在你不熟悉的地方帮助你,可见与同伴旅行有其好处。故D选项“但结伴旅行也有好处”符合语境,与前文“Traveling alone gives you the freedom to create your own schedule and do as you please.(独自旅行可以让你自由地制定自己的时间表,随心所欲)”所讲的独自旅行的好处形成转折关系,故选D。
根据后文“Traveling should be fun. When you are on a trip, you will want to do lots of activities that you enjoy. Preferably, your companion will want to do the same things as you.(旅行应该是有趣的。
根据上文“Have an honest conversation. If you are thinking about traveling with a companion, take some time to have an open discussion. Schedule a time to sit down and talk. Try saying, “I know we’ve talked about the idea of traveling through Europe together. Let’s have a coffee this week and actually talk that through.”(进行一次诚实的对话。
根据后文“Maybe it will rain on the day you planned to visit the Grand Canyon. Or you might not be able to get reservations at that French restaurant you’ve been dying to try. (也许你计划去大峡谷的那天会下雨。又或者,你一直想去的那家法国餐厅可能订不到位子)”可知,后文提到因为也许天公不作美,当你想去大峡谷旅行时却下雨了,表明无论你多么小心地计划你的旅行,都很可能会出错。故G选项“不管你把旅行计划得多么仔细,还是有可能出差错”符合语境,故选G。

    【答案】
    Should English stay or go?
While some people advocate that English be excluded from the college entrance examination, I firmly believe that English should continue to be a major subject within the Gaokao.
First and foremost, English is considered the universal language of the world, and therefore, possessing a good command of the language is essential in today’s globalized world. Moreover, English is also a gateway to higher education. Many universities and colleges worldwide require applicants to have a certain level of proficiency in English. Removing English from the curriculum would put our students at a disadvantage. Lastly, English is a subject that opens up avenues for personal growth and self-improvement. Studying English helps students develop critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills, all of which are vital in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing society.

“I can’t like it.” My daughter made a face and spit her spinach (菠菜) back onto her plate. “I want nuggets (鸡块)! All my friends at school get whatever they want for dinner. I hate you!” She was screaming while throwing her food on the floor.
Annoyed, but bound and determined not to be one of those moms who gave in to her child’s picky (挑剔的) eating habits, I gathered myself and tried a different approach. I gave her a serious “don’t-mess-with-me” look and said, “Come on, you know the rule.”
“Yes, I should try everything three times,” she replied with a roll of her eyes.
“That’s right,” I said in my sweetest mom voice. “So two more bites.”
When I was a child, my mother said I had to try every food three times. Her reasoning was this: one time to try it, the second time to get over the fact that you had just tried it, and the third to make sure that you don’t like it. After those three attempts, if I still hated the taste, she would never make me eat it again. Her reasonable and supportive approach worked almost every time.
I was raising my daughter with this same reasonable rule. A small smile crept onto my face now as I saw her swallow her second bite of spinach and then open her mouth for the third. She slowly chewed her final forced bite, and my thoughts returned to how the “three things rule” had affected my life.
As I grew older, I brought that three-times philosophy into my daily life. Every time I was faced with something outside my comfort zone, I repeated to myself that I should try everything three times, and it gave me the strength to move ahead. From public speaking to job interviews, all my major fears had somehow been faced by one simple idea: Try everything three times.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
My thoughts wandered back to the time when I tried jumping off the terrifying diving board. I had been frightened of the diving board at the pool, but I had managed to make the first attempt. Though I breathed in some water, I was up and out of the pool, heading back to that diving board. I barely paused before I jumped off with a flourish the second time. More coughing was followed, but I was determined to beat this fear. The third time there was no fear and no water in my nose. Actually there were cheers from the others at the pool. At that point, I found myself fascinated by diving.
“Mommy, I can like it now,” my daughter said, her voice pulling me out of my memories. I smiled, pleased to see that my “three-times philosophy” also worked with my daughter. We are all afraid of the unknown. But how can we be sure that something won’t be enjoyable unless we give it a shot? After all, if I hadn’t tried everything three times, you would not be reading this. In my mid-thirties, I left a successful job that did not fulfill me to pursue my dream of being a writer. After two rejections, I tried for a third time. I have been happily living the life of a writer ever since. And my daughter the picky eater? Spinach has been one of her favorites.
