The shower, I find, is the best place to cry. The water covers the sound of my sadness, while washing away any evidence of my pain. I shower after the kids have gone to bed; it’s the only time I can be alone. I always did my best to protect my two children from my tears. If I needed to cry, I cried by myself.
Yet, I encourage my two boys to cry. My 7-year-old prides himself on never crying at school. “Oh, but you must cry,” I insist. “Crying’s good. It gets the sadness out. Never hold back your tears.” But then I did just that. What might it do to them to see their mother upset?
Then my father died, and there was no way I could schedule my grief and keep my feelings inside. The realization that my dad was actually gone hit me with an intensity that was impossible to cover up.
To my surprise, my boys didn’t seem too alarmed. They found me hiding in the bedroom one afternoon, weeping. “It’s OK, mommies get sad too,” I told them, smiling through my tears.
“Don’t be sad, Mommy. Grandad’s coming back as a baby,” my 7-year-old said, his tiny arm stretched across my shoulders. “Think about love,” he went on. “Think about all the people who love you.”
I realized that in hiding my pain, I was only denying what it means to be human. I felt as if I had led my sons to believe that “negative” emotions are only a concept, and not something they should possess. It’s one thing to tell my children it’s OK to cry. It’s another to show them how it’s done.
We owe that to our children, according to social researcher Brene Brown. During her TED talk The Power of Vulnerability, Brown said, “it’s imperative that we should let ourselves be seen – deeply seen”. “Our job is not to protect our children, to keep them perfect,” said Brown. “Our job is to look and say, ‘You’re imperfect, and you’re made for struggles, but you are worthy of love and belonging’.”
4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. She usually schedules her grief.
B. She seldom gets her sadness out.
C. She finds inspirations when she showers.
D. She believes boys should be tough.
5. What was the author’s reaction to the words of her seven-year-old?
A. She felt moved by his comforting words.
B. She was surprised he completely understood her sadness.
C. She was glad that her children didn’t worry about her sadness.
D. She realized how she handled sadness had misled her children.
6. Which one can replace the underlined word “imperative” in the last paragraph?
A. unwilling B. necessary C. modest D. thrilled
7. What does the author suggest parents do?
A. Parents should learn to get their emotions out.
B. Parents should tell kids never hold back their tears.
C. Parents should teach kids how to handle grief through examples.
D. Parents should try to push their children to work toward perfection.

British sculptor Jason Taylor has made it his mission to use his talent to conserve our ecosystems by creating underwater museums. Over the years, the environmentalist has put over 850 massive artworks underwater worldwide. On February 1, 2021, Taylor launched his latest work---The Underwater Museum of Cannes.
“The main goal was to bring attention to the fact that our oceans need our help,” Taylor told Dezeen. “Ocean ecologies have been destroyed by human activity in the Mediterranean over the past few decades, and it is not obvious what is taking place when observing the sea from afar.”
The Underwater Museum of Cannes contains 6 sculptures featuring local residents of various ages. They range from Maurice, an 80-year-old fisherman, to Anouk, a 9-year-old student. Towering over 6-feet-tall and weighing 10 tons, the faces are sectioned into two parts, with the outer part like a mask. The mask indicates that the world’s oceans appear powerful and unbeatable from the surface but house an ecosystem that is extremely fragile to careless human activities.
Though the waters surrounding the sculptures now appear a pristine blue, the seabed was filled with old boat engines, pipes, and other human-made trash when the project began about four years ago. Besides removing the trash, Taylor also restored the area’s seagrass. Just one square meter of the seagrass can generate up to 10 liters of oxygen daily. The seagrass also helps prevent coastal erosion and provides habitats for many ocean creatures.
“The idea of creating an underwater museum was to draw more people underwater and develop a sense of care and protection,” Taylor told Dezeen. “If we threw unwanted waste near a forest, there would be a public outcry. But this is happening every day in our surrounding waters and it largely goes unnoticed.”
8. What are the underwater museums intended to do?
A. To make huge profits. B. To raise awareness of protecting the ocean.
C. To show Jason Taylor’s talent. D. To draw attention to endangered sea animals.
9. Why does the outer part of the sculptures look like a mask?
A. To popularize the features of the locals.
B. To remind people to protect themselves.
C. To reflect people’s protection of the ocean.
D. To stress the sensitiveness of the ecosystem.
10. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How the project was started. B. How the seagrass was restored.
C. What recovery effort the project made. D. Why the surroundings were improved.
11. What can we infer from what Jason Taylor said in the last paragraph?
A The situation of the ocean is easily ignored.
B. The destruction caused to the ocean is noticeable.
C. Forests play a more important role in ecosystems.
D. People have zero tolerance to damage done to nature.

A recent study by University of Delaware researchers suggests exercise can help kids to learn and remember vocabulary. The article, published in the Journal of Speech Language and Hearing Research, details one of the first studies on the effect of exercise on vocabulary learning in children.
Children ages 6 to 12 were taught new words before doing one of three things- swimming , taking part in CrossFit exercises or completing a coloring sheet. The children who swam were 13% more accurate in follow-up tests of the vocabulary words.
It makes sense to the lead researcher, Maddy Pruitt, herself a former college swimmer. “Motor movement helps in learning new words,” she said, explaining that exercise is known to increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(脑衍生神经营养因子).Then why did swimming make a difference while CrossFit did not? Pruitt attributes(归因) it to the amount of energy each exercise demands of the brain. Swimming is an activity the kids could complete without much thought or instruction. It was more automatic, while the CrossFit exercises were new to them. The children needed to learn the moves, which required mental energy.
Pruitt conducted the research as part of her Master s Capstone Project and graduated in 2020. She now works as a speech-language pathologist (病理学家) at a primary school in South Carolina, where she puts her findings into practice.
“My sessions are very rarely at a table,” she said. “I’ll take my kids out to the playground or we’ll take a walk around the school.”
Pruitt’s adviser and coauthor Giovanna Morini is building on the findings in her lab. Morini said most research into exercise examined it from the angle of a healthy lifestyle, not much entering the area of language acquisition.
“We are so excited about this study because it applies to clinicians, caregivers and educators who can put it into practice, Morini said.” It’s simple stuff, nothing out of the ordinary. But it could help boost the outcomes.
12. What were all the children asked to do in the study?
A. Complete vocabulary tests. B. Teach others new words.
C. Identify different colors. D. Share swimming skills.
13. What does the author mainly talk about in paragraph 3?
A. The way of the study. B. The subject of the study.
C. The applications of the findings. D. The reasons for the study result.
14. How does Pruitt put her findings into practice?
A. By setting up clinics with other researchers.
B By training the students to swim regularly.
C. By adding physical exercise to her sessions.
D By asking the students to learn complex words.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Kids Are Supposed to Exercise Before Studying
B. Exercise Contributes to Kids’ Vocabulary Growth
C. Swimming Does Good to People’s Physical Health
D. Research Should Be Done on Language Acquisition

第二节(满分 25 分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I’m smaller than everyone else my age. When I walk in the halls at school, I have to squeeze in between the bigger kids to get by. At the playground, sometimes even little kids try to boss me around. Mia, my best friend, is so tall that when she walks, I have to jog to keep up with her.
I used to try to make myself taller whenever I could. My posture was perfect, straight as an arrow. I hung from the tree in our backyard to stretch out my arms and legs. I even ate all my vegetables. Every day I measured myself, but I was the same height every time. Frustrating!
“Don’t worry,” Mom always said. “Being small has its advantages.” “Really? I could never notice any.”
One day, Mrs. Alvarez announced to the class that we’d be putting on a spring play. I practiced all the lines. But at the audition (试演), when I walked up to the stage, Mrs. Alvarez cried, “You’ll be perfect as the elf (小精灵)! You’re just the right size for the costume.” I even never got a chance to deliver the practiced lines. Back home I grumbled (咕哝) to mum that I was made an elf. But she bet I would be the best elf. To please her, I went to rehearsals (排练), though I only had two lines.
Mia got the lead role-a girl wandering through a magical fairy forest in search of her lost dog. In the last scene, she finds a box under a giant mushroom, and when she opens it, her dog jumps out. Mrs. Alvarez’s dog, Prince, played the dog role. She brought him to all the rehearsals, and when he wasn’t onstage, we got to play with him, but he seemed to like me best.
The night of the show, my first line came early, “Let’s ask the Fairy Queen!” Since my only other line was toward the end, I waited offstage, playing with Prince.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, the grand end came, and Prince was brought onstage inside the box.

“How can we get Prince out from beneath the stage?” Mrs. Alvarez asked.
