Pasta and pizza were on everyone’s lunch menu in my native land of Italy. Everyone who had such a lunch was fair-skinned and spoke Italian. A few years later, my family moved to the US. As I stood in the lunch line with my kindergarten class in a school in Brooklyn, I realized things were no longer that simple. My classmates ranged from those kids with pale skin and large blue eyes to those with rich brown skin and dark hair. The food choices were almost as diverse (各种各样的) as the students. In front of me were a variety of foods I couldn’t even name in my native language. Fearing that I would pick out something awful, I tried badly to ask the boy ahead of me for a recommendation. Unfortunately, between us stood the barrier of language.
Although my kindergarten experience feels like a century ago, the lessons I learned will stick in my mind forever. For the past three summers, I have worked in a government department in New York. New immigrants (移民) —much like the little girl in the lunch line flooded our office asking for help. I often had to be an interpreter for the Italian-speaking ones. As I served the role of vital communication link, I was reminded of my struggle to communicate before I learned English. I watched with great sympathy as old Italians tried to hold a conversation in Italian with people who did not speak the language. It suddenly became very clear to me how lucky I was to be fluent in two languages.
In New York, a multicultural city, students like me are blessed with a chance to work with a diverse population. In my English to Italian translations, I’ve learned about social programs that I didn’t know existed. This work expanded my mind in ways that are impossible inside the four walls of a classroom. Walking through the streets of Brooklyn today, I am no longer confused by this city’s sounds and smells. Instead, I enjoy its diversity.
24. What did the author realize after entering school in Brooklyn?
A. English was hard to learn. B. She struggled to communicate.
C. She was an ordinary looking girl. D. The food was terrible and strange.
25. Who does “the little girl” underlined in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. An Italian teacher. B. A government official.
C. The author herself. D. The author’s classmate.
26. How did the summer job benefit the author?
A. It strengthened her love for school. B. It helped sharpen her sense of direction.
C. It opened her eyes to the real world. D. It made her childhood dream come true.
27. What can be the best title of the text?
A. English and Italian, Worlds Apart B. It Takes All Sorts to Make a World
C. Pasta and Pizza, All the Same to Me D. Don’t Judge People by Their Appearance
C
Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes? Let’s have a look.
People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are nervous have ants in their pants. Sometimes, people may get caught with their pants down, which means they are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say she wears the pants in the family.
Pants usually have pockets to hold things. Money that is likely to be spent quickly can burn a hole in your pocket. Sometimes you need a belt to hold up your pants. If you aren’t able to make ends meet and have less money than usual, you may have to tighten your belt.
I always praise people who can save their money and not spend too much. I really take my hat off to them. Yet, when it comes to my own money, I spend it at the drop of a hat, which means I immediately spend it.
Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are too big for their boots think they are more important than they really are. I dislike such people.
My father is a successful business man who runs a big computer company. He wears a suit and tie, and a shirt with sleeves that cover his arms. Some people who do not know him well think he is too serious and never shows his feelings openly. But I know that my father wears his heart on his sleeve.
28. What is this passage mainly about?
A. Some unfamiliar funny English expressions.
B. Some English expressions related to clothes.
C. The relationship between clothing and personality.
D. The symbolic meaning of pants in English expression.

A. Have ants in one’s pants. B. Burn a hole in one’s pocket.
C. Wear the pants in the family. D. Get caught with one’s pants down.
30. What do we probably mean if we say someone has to tighten his belt?
A. The person is short of money. B. The person used to live a rich life.
C. The person has done something wrong. D. The person has put on the wrong pants.
31. What does the author think of his father?
A. Shy and kind. B. Strict and distant.
C. Considerate and serious. D. Easy-going and outspoken.
D
This morning, 1 saw the shocking headline: “Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mode”. In the article, various people said that the public should oppose the idea of developing driverless cars. They said that some advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be dangerous. Hence, we should stop accepting technology just because it is new. The newspaper reported that the car company had already apologized for the accident, but the families of the deceased said it was not enough. Nevertheless, the company still claimed that most people would be travelling in driverless cars one day soon.
On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily in the absence of new technology. Probably the most well-known are the Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV, or use the Internet. They have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th century, and they will probably be living the same way in the distant future. They advocate a simple life with an emphasis on family and community. They think that it is better than caring about luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be argued that Christians’ life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities.
On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weather-tracking computer programs give people lots of warnings about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Moreover, the Internet has made it possible for friends and family to keep in contact easily even if they arc on opposite sides of the world. It has also made finding opportunities in life much easier, as it allows people to make larger networks of friends through using social media.
Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances. I found my career as an Al designer through a social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into the best shape of my life. Of course, when new technology changes the way we live, it can be a scary prospect (前景). Nevertheless, I will always look on the bright side of changes and accept it rather than resist it.
32. What’s the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To present the author’s attitude to technology.
B. To analyse the danger about new technology.
C. To show the present situation of society.
D. To introduce the topic of the passage.
33. Which life style do the Christians living in rural America support?
A. Caring about luxuries.
B. Living in a big city with family.
C. Focusing on the interaction between people.
D. Depending on new technology to change the life.
34. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To illustrate how it is better to use the driverless car.
B. To prove that the new technology will bring dangers.
C. To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of new technology.
D. To persuade people to stop continuing the new way of travelling.
35. What’s the author’s attitude towards technological advances?
A. Opposed. B. Positive. C. Disappointed. D. Doubtful.

If people aren’t shouldering their share of the work load, privately discuss this with them. In the talk you should let them know you’re hoping you can depend on them to contribute a little more. 38
Make good use of the available resources.
Difficulties and challenges are everywhere. 39 If you don’t know the answer to something, or notice that something needs to be done but you’re not sure how to do it yourselves, you’re the one to turn to your teachers, coaches, or who arc your available resources.
40
Sometimes the way things have been done is outdated or they could be done in a better way. You will be the one to decide if a certain rule or policy needs to be changed. Friday, 15 September
Finally, it’s Friday! I can’t believe this fabulous week is coming to an end.
At junior high, we had to take so many classes that we had no enough time to enjoy our school life. However, there are various after-school activities at senior high, such as Campus Art Festival. Earth panting, mint marathon, and the like. I have been enjoying my colourful school life.
The sports meeting held today impressed me most. I was doing the warm-up exercises for the men’s 200-meter race when a boy fell over accidentally and got bad injury to the knees. 1 rushed him to the medical area and helped him back to his classroom. Sadly, I missed my race. However, I made friends with the injured boy, Tom.
I believe I am to have a fascinating school life at senior high in the following days.
