If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it’s still eatable? The easiest way is to check the use-by date printed on the cover. If that date has already passed, you’re likely to throw the candy away. But is that really necessary? According to a report, tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don’t fully understand what use-by dates actually mean and they think the food is not safe to eat.
Use-by dates were introduced in 1975 because customers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use-by dates only showed freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.
However, most customers mistakenly believed that use-by dates showed how safe the food was. But the truth is that these dates aren’t related to the danger of food poisoning (中毒). Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after being bought, even though the use-by date is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, cookies may lose their delicious taste, but they are not harmful.
“It’s an unclear subject, the difference between food quality and food safety,” said Jena Roberts from a US food testing company. Even workers in the food factory are not sure about it. This is why the use-by dates must be printed on the covers of products. “We hope it can help customers understand the information so that they won’t waste a lot of food.”
But this won’t be a mistake that is easy to correct, because people have believed it for so long. As a result, food factory officials are now thinking about turning the use-by date into a date which can show when food is most likely to be thrown away.
    54. What can we know from the first paragraph?
A.Every year most factories produce too much food for people.
B.People throw away food because they think it is unsafe to eat.
C.It’s necessary for people to throw away tons of food every year.
D.The use-by dates are wrongly printed, so people throw away food.
    55. Which of the following information can describe the use-by date?
    A. SN66015972306795500 B. 806725A166949
    C. BETTER IF USED BY Apr. 11th, 2023
    D. Energy: 549 KJ 7%  Protein: 1.4 g 2%  Fat: 7.4 g 12%
    56. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
    A. Food factory officials are planning to change use-by dates.
    B. Most people care more about food freshness than food safety.
    C. Eggs cannot be eaten three to five weeks after people buy them.
    D. Workers in the food factory know clearly about food quality and food safety.

    A. Different kinds of food. B. Food freshness and quality.

Tons of people enjoy listening to different types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many believe that music helps get the creative juices flowing, but an international new study is challenging that view by putting volunteers through a series of tests.
The study was performed as a joint partnership between psychologists at three universities in Europe. The results suggest that any task that relies on verbal (与文字有关的) creativity was impaired(削弱) when listening to any type of music.
Subjects (受试者) in the project all spoke English as their first language, and had no problem in their sight or hearing.
The tasks were simple word games. For example, subjects were given three words, such as dress, shine, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word which could be connected with all three to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunflower, etc).
Subjects completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while they were played background music with foreign lyrics (歌词), English lyrics, and instrumental music with no lyrics at all.
The research team also tested the library background noises, but found that such noises had no great difference in subjects’ creativity. The study’s authors believe that was the case because library noise is a “steady state” environment which is not as disruptive (扰乱的). Music with or without lyrics is characterized by changes in pitch or tone.
It’s worth mentioning that even familiar music with well known lyrics impaired subjects’
creativity, even when subjects declared that they worked or studied with music on regularly and the music improved their overall mood.
So next time you sit down for a study session with those lo-fi beats, you may be giving your brain something else to focus on rather than your work.
    58. What does “that view” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
    A. Listening to music while working is so common.
    B. People enjoy listening to different types of music.
    C. Listening to music impairs creativity.
    D. Music helps improve our creativity.
    59. According to the word game in Paragraph 4, if volunteers are given three words “foot, base, basket”,what is the single word?
    A. Case. B. Line. C. Print. D. Ball.
    60. Which of the following had no great difference in performance of the verbal tasks?
    A. Familiar music with well known lyrics. B. The quiet and library noise conditions.
    C. Background music with foreign lyrics. D. Instrumental music with no lyrics.
    61. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
    A. Music cannot disrupt the verbal working memory of the disabled.
    B. Different kinds of music impair different parts of our brains.
    C. You may do your work better without listening to music.
    D. Library noises are characterized by changes in pitch or tone.

When Mike Mushaw decided to join the national bone marrow registry (骨髓登记) he never thought much. He did it only because of his college football coach’s encouragement.
But about six months later, he did get a call. His bone marrow matched a patient in Virginia, a girl named Eleanor with a rare disease. She’d hardly left her house, except to travel to the hospital. As the days passed, her condition had become only more serious and she would die without the transplant (移植).
At first, Eleanor’s family had only hoped that she would have some improvement from the transplant, enough to lead a more normal life. But after a few weeks, the doctors came back with shocking news: Eleanor’s condition had just improved — Mike’s bone marrow had cured her!
Mike didn’t know any of this until Eleanor’s parents sent him an e-mail to thank him. “When they told me it was a five-month-old girl, I got a little choked up (哽咽).” Mike says.
But their surprising connection was only beginning. Mike asked whether he and Eleanor could FaceTime regularly. “It was amazing to watch her and be a part of her life.” he says. Eleanor kept tabs on him, too, by watching his football games on TV. Mike often invited her family to meet at his games in Connecticut where tiny shouts of “Mike! Mike!” could be heard from the stands as the little girl cheered on her very own hero. In January, Mike reunited with Eleanor, this time in Virginia, for her birthday. “As parent, it feels really great to watch someone love your kid as much as you do.” Eleanor’s mother says, “We were two complete strangers, and now we’ve become such a big part of each other’s lives!”
    62. From Paragraph 1-3, we can know that ________.
    A. Mike decided to donate his bone marrow for he felt so sorry for the young girl
    B. the only place Eleanor went to was the hospital because of her serious disease
    C. Eleanor’s family was certain that she could be cured with the transplant
    D. the doctors were not still very hopeful after the transplant
    63. Mike might feel ________ when Eleanor’s parents told him everything.
A.surprised and moved B.thankful and relieved
C.lucky and pitiful D.worried and helpless
64.The phrase “kept tabs on” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.
    A.paid a price for B.kept a record of
C.took pride in D.paid close attention to
65.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Eleanor could live a normal life now thanks to her love for life.
B.Eleanor was disappointed when watching Mike’s football games.
C.Eleanor first saw Mike when he went to Virginia to celebrate her birthday.
D.The donation had helped to build a close connection between Mike and Eleanor.

    七、阅读与回答问题 (本题共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Most people hope to have a memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can memory be improved? Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50 years have already given us a definite answer.
A healthy lifestyle keeps your brain and memory sharp. First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy diet. Eating more food rich in vitamin B and vitamin E, such as vegetables and lean meat(瘦肉) helps you have a better memory. Doing exercise can keep your brain alive too. Proper exercise provides much needed oxygen(氧) for the brain. Running, riding a bike, swimming and even walking two or three times a week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is of importance. Only when your brain gets a good rest can it work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become, but do not expect a sudden change--- it takes a long time to make a difference.
Memory skills help you remember things better. The following three are the most widely used.
Chunking is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it into smaller ones. For example, memorize a ten-digit telephone number 2127983630, you can separate the digits into three groups: first 212, then 798, and last 3630. This method is far more effective than remembering a string of 10 digits.
Organization means organizing information into groups of the same kind. For example, trees, grass and flowers are plants; tigers, pandas, horses and cows are animals.
Imagery is remembering newly learnt information by using your imagination and connecting it with something that you are familiar with.
However, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the information. Only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what they have learnt after one day and then after three days, and then use it as regularly as possible.
Human brains are like muscles(肌肉) that need nutrients(营养) and exercise to become stronger. If you make a few changes of the lifestyle and try some memory skills and you can certainly improve your memory.
    91. What does proper exercise provide?
    ________________________________________________________________________
    92. How can you remember the newly learnt information?
    ________________________________________________________________________
    93. Why are students always advised to go over what they have learnt?
    ________________________________________________________________________
    94. What is the article mainly about?
    ________________________________________________________________________
    95. What do you do to improve your memory? (请自拟一句话作答)
