Chinese people call the Spring Festival "Nian”. But do you know that Nian was once the name of a monster (妖怪)?
A long time ago, the monster Nian lived in the mountains. It ate animals. But in winter, it could not find food. So it came to villages and ate a lot of people.

Some people believe that dreams can tell them what will happen in the future. Nobody knows why,But
there are many stories about people who have had dreams that came true. One of  these  people was a man 
called John Chapman, who lived in the small town of Swaffham in 
England. He dreamed that he was standing on London Bridge and a man told him how to become rich. John
 Chapman was a poor man and he needed money, so the next day he set off for London. He walked for three 
days and three nights and at last arrived at London Bridge. There were plenty of people on the bridge, but they were not interested in him.They all ignored him. After three days, he decided to go home, but before he could do this a shopkeeper approached him.

Yuan Longping，the “Father of Hybrid Rice”，passed away in Changsha at the age of 91 on May 22，2021.Yuan had spent his whole life doing research on rice.Now about one fifth of rice around the world comes from the hybrid rice he developed.

You often hear “New year, new me” in the UK on the first of January. It is very common to start a new year’s resolution on this day. This can be to give up something, like sweets or chocolate, so you can be healthier. People also like to start doing something new. There are so many things you can do! Many people I know decide to play sports and eat healthier food as their new year’s resolution. Many become heavier after the holidays as they often eat a lot.
I think new year’s resolutions are a great idea to give people motivation (动机) to do something good for themselves. When other people have the same resolution as yours, it helps you to stick to your own. For example, you could go jogging (慢跑) with a group of friends several times a week. That can be so much more fun and help you to keep the resolution.
Also, I think it is important for you to choose something realistic as a new year’s resolution. In the past, I have given up chocolate, stopped eating meat and started doing kungfu. Soon after that, I gave up some of these things, such as not eating chocolate. They were too difficult to keep. And some I kept on with and still do now.
This year, my resolution is to travel less by plane. Living in the UK, it was very difficult to travel without a car and not by plane, but now that I live in Germany I find it much easier to travel by another mode (模式) of transport. There are more environmentally friendly ways that I can choose like travelling by train or bus, though it’s more expensive, I know that I will do harm to the environment much less.
