Screams f jy appear t be easicer fr ur brains t cmprehend than screams f fear, a new study suggests. The results add a suprising new dimensin t scientis’ lng-held belief that ur brains are wired t quickly respnd t fearful screams as a survival mechanism.
The study lked at different scream types and hw listeners perceive them. The team asked participants t imagine “yu are being attacked by an armed stranger in darkness” and scream in fear, and t imagine “yur favrite team wins the Wrld Cup” and scream in jy. The participants prduced six emtinal screams-pain, anger, fear, pleasure, sadness, and jy.
Separate sets f study participants were then required t tell the different scream types apart. In ne task, 33 vlunteers were asked t listen t screams and given three secnds t categrize them int ne f the six different screams. In anther task, 35 different vlunteers were presented with tw screams, ne at a time, and were asked t categrize the screams quickly while still trying t decide what type f scream it was, either alarming screams f pain, anger r fear r nn-alarming screams f pleasure, sadness r jy. It tk lnger fr participants t cmplete the task when it invlved fear and ther alarming screams, and thse screams were nt as easily recgnizable as nn-alarming screams like jy, the researchers reprt nline April 13 in PLOS Bilgy.
In a fllw-up experiment, 30 different vlunteers underwent fMRI（功能性磁共振成像）while listening t the screams. Less-alarming screams caused mre activity in the auditry（听觉的） and frntal brain regins than mre-alarming screams, the team fund.
