The teacher spoke so 43 that almost everything he said flew right over my head. I sat in the front, took notes and even recorded every single word he said in class, but 44 helped. I had no idea what the class was really about...
Years have passed, but I still remember how it felt to struggle so hard at 45 another language. I think my failure that term taught me just as much as success.

March 2 is Old Stuff(物品) Day. You must have some old stuff around. And today is all about enjoying it. Because what’s better than finding something really great from days gone by?
It’s so easy to forget things you have. And that’s not just the things in your home—in the age of new information, we can have so many things easily. Today is all about remembering the things we sometimes leave behind.
We’ve learned to value(重视) what age can bring to things. Wines, for example, are more valuable and tastier as they grow older. It’s certain that old things still have their uses or charm(魅力). People today will pay a pretty penny for stamps, toys, video games, books, coins, and clothes of yesterday.

Old stuff could become a great gift for someone else, or you could always send your old things to a charity(慈善) shop. If you’re free, you could turn your old things like old clothes into new ones with just a little change.
Today could be a good day to visit your older family. You could ask your grandparents to tell you stories about family history, their childhood and their youth. Learn about what was going on in the world when they were growing up.

To us, it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But in fact the umbrella was not invented as protection against the rain. Its first use was as a sunshade(遮阳伞).
Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the Chinese were the first to use it, back in the 11th century BC.
We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing that connected with its use: it was a symbol of honor and power. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by those in the upper class or by royal people such as kings or queens.
In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. The umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece, but it is believed that the first people in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the Middle Ages in Europe, the use of the umbrella almost disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late 16th century. And again it became a symbol of power.
The umbrella has not changed much in style during all the time, though it has become much lighter in weight. It wasn’t until the 20th century that the umbrellas for women began to be made in all kinds of colors.

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st-January 1st. There are many holidays and festivals. Dads have Father’s Day Mums have Mother’s Day But do our grandparents have a special festival? Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for older people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect to their grandparents.
There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That’s because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.
In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called “seniors” instead of “old people”. They’d rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement (退休) they take up hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.
Westerners respect their older people, too. Usually, seniors don’t have to buy tickets for trains and buses. They are given discounts (打折) in stores and restaurants.
But Western seniors don’t often live with their children—they live alone. For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents’home, and a great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.
