Good evening, listeners. I'm Barbara Klein with EXPLORATIONS. Today we will talk about disappearing languages in the world. Experts say that one language disappears every two weeks.
Sometimes a language disappears immediately when the last speaker dies. Or, a local language might disappear more slowly. This happens when an official language is used more often and children stop learning the local language. For example, many native languages in the Russian area of Siberia are at risk. This is mainly because the country used Russian as the offcial language.
Experts say protecting languages is very important for many reasons. Gregory Anderson, an expert in protecting endangered languages, said, “Language is a window to the mind in many ways. These languages can show all kinds of ways that we build the world. Language is a way of storing the history of people. Languages reflect a different historical communication with other groups. For example, some words are borrowed from one language into another. And, for people that have no written history, language can be one of the ways to get to know the history.
Experts say bringing back disappearing languages is not easy, but it is very important. One example takes place in Hawaii. In the 1890s, the United States stopped the use of the Hawaiian language in private and public schools. The language began to disappear. Then native people protested ( 抗议) and the Hawaiian language began to be taught again in schools. Now about two thousand children speak Hawaiian and more importantly, many families now speak Hawaiian at home.
This program was written and produced by Dana Demange. I'm Barbara Klein. Join us again next week for XPLORATIONS.
