My father was 42 a strong man who loved being active, but a terrible illness 43 all that away. Now he can no longer walk, and he must sit quietly in a chair all day. Even speaking is 44 . One night, I went to visit him with my sisters, we started talking about life, and I told them about one of my beliefs. I said that we must always give things up 45 we grow — our youth, our beauty, our friends — but it always seems that after we give something up, we get something new in its place. Then suddenly my father said, "But, Peter. I 46 everything! What did I get?” I thought and thought, but I could not think of anything to say. Surprisingly, he answered his own question, “I 47 the love of my family." I looked at my sisters, and saw tears in their eyes, along with hope and thankfulness.
I was also 48 by his words. After that, when I began to feel angry at someone, I would remember his words and become calm. If he could replaced his great pain with a feeling of love for others, then I should be 49 to give up my small irritations(恼怒). In this way, I learned the power of acceptance from my father.
Sometimes I want to know 50 other things I could learn from him if I listened more carefully when I was a boy. For now, though, I am thankful for this one gift.

How do young children learn to have good values? How can parents teach their children about the importance of kindness and patience? At a time more and more parents worry about the violent images (暴力形象) their children see on TV, some are turning on fairy tales (童话).
It is believed that fairy tales have a great influence on children because they describe the two sides of good and evil (邪恶) very clearly. When children hear the stories, they learn to care about others’ feelings. In each tale, they can see that there are many different kinds of people in the world and that we all have a choice about what kind of person we want to be. We can choose to do good actions, rather than bad ones in our lives.
What kind of values can children learn from fairy tales? In The Princess and the Pea《豌豆公主》, a poorly dressed girl, who insists she is a princess, is given a difficult test by the Queen. When she passes the test, we learn that her dream comes true because she stays true to herself. In The Little Mermaid, the mermaid, who lives under the sea, wishes to be with the humans on land. Through her experiences, we learn about the importance of living with and accepting other cultures. In Pinocchio, a wooden puppet (木偶)turns into a boy when he finally learns how to tell the truth.
Teaching values is the reason most often given for encouraging children to read stories. These fairy tales can teach children lessons about human relationships that are accepted around the world for many centuries. This might be the reason why they have been around for so long and will not disappear any time soon.

Sadness and happiness are often talked about by people in their spare time. Most people want themselves to be happy forever, but few know how to find happiness. Others say if you own lots of money and success, you will be happy. However, money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. A famous Greek thinker, Aristotle, said, “Happiness depends on ourselves.” That’s to say, we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.
The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future, for example, getting into college or getting a good job, which we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favourite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.
Another secret to living a happy life is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activities.
Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping or help out with some things around the house for an elderly person.
If you do above, you will be happy.
59. How many suggestions of happiness are mentioned in this passage?

What time of day do you feel most alert (清醒的)? Are you more of a morning person? Or does your brain need a few hours to get going? A lot of research suggests that we should pay attention to our body clock. It can tell us what time of day we are best able to perform, according to the Wall Street Journal (华尔街日报).
When it comes to the human brain, many people work best later in the morning. This is because the body’s temperature takes time to rise through the day. Taking a warm shower when you wake up can help speed this up.
But everyone’s body clock is different. Morning people will rise early and work better early in the day. Evening people will wake later but their brain will work better toward the end of the day.
Research shows that we’re better at some activities at certain times of the day. Physical performance is at its best between 3 pm and 6 pm, so it’s better to exercise later in the day.
Between noon and 4 pm, people begin to get distracted(思想不集中的). This is partly because our brain becomes less alert after we eat a big meal. Research also shows that we become sleepy around 2 pm.
Finally, it is best to eat during our active periods. This allows our body to burn calories better and stops our blood sugar levels from getting too high.
63. Many people perform best later in the morning because ________.

B. We perform better after eating a big meal.
C. Sleeping at 2 pm is not good for our health.
D. Our body burns calories better at night.
66. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Research about time
B. The best time to do things
C. Different periods of a day
D. Brain activities at different places
D
The expression "down to earth" means being open and honest. It is easy to get on with someone who is down to earth. A down-to-earth person is the opposite of someone who are important (自负的) or proud.
Down-to-earth people could be important members of society. But they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. While a person who is filled with his own importance and pride is said to have his nose in the air.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some ways to down to earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality.
He may have dreams, but he does not allow them to have influence on his understanding of what is real. The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. Someone with his head in the clouds is a person whose mind is not on what is happening in real life. Such a person may be called a day-dreamer.
When we have both our feet on the ground, and when we are down to earth, we do not have our noses in the air. We act honestly and openly to others. Our lives are like the ground below us -- solid and strong.
67. A down-to-earth person could be .

“I will think of it.” It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking?
Sir Isaac Newton was sitting in his garden when he saw an apple fall from a tree. He began to think and tried to find out why the apple fell. Then he discovered how the sun, moon, and stars are kept in their places.
A boy named James Watt sat quietly by the fire, watching the lid of the kettle (水壶盖) move up and down. He wanted to find out why the steam in the kettle moved the lid. From that time he went on thinking and thinking. And when he became a man, he improved the steam engine (蒸汽机) so much that it could easily do the work of many horses.
James Ferguson was a poor boy. Once, seeing the inside of a watch, he wondered. “Why should I not make a watch?” But how could he get the materials to make the mainspring (钟表的主发条)? He soon found he could make it with whalebone (鲸骨). He then made a wooden clock which kept good time. His motto (座右铭) was “I will think of it.” And he made his thoughts useful to himself and the world.
Boys and girls, when you have a difficult lesson to learn, don’t lose heart, and don’t ask someone for help before helping yourselves. Think, and by thinking you will learn how to think to some purpose.

Do Yao Ming, Su Bingtian and Justine Henin have anything in common with people like us? You probably answer “No!”
It seems that top athletes (运动员) live in a world that is completely different from ours. However, if we could see into their minds, it would be clear that they are actually just like us.
To achieve their goals, sportspeople not only have to prepare physically, but mentally (内心地). They have to get to know themselves, manage stress and develop their powers of concentration (专注). So they can put all their effort into their events.
We may not be sports stars ourselves, but we have to face same problems. We set goals for ourselves and think about personal development. We have to manage our fears before big exams. We worry about our friendships with both classmates and teachers.
Like sportspeople, we try to be mentally strong and give our best.
Only few of us will be competing in the Olympic Games. But, all the same, there is much we share with sports heroes. Just like athletes, how we feel influences our decisions, behavior and achievements.
Top athletes show us that success isn’t simply down to chance. Remember: we can control the direction of our life’s journey.
