If you could choose, would you rather be a genius or a common person? This was the question our teacher asked us after we watched a movie called Gifted. Honestly, it took me a while to think about the answer. But as it turned out, I was still not sure.
In the movie, a girl named Mary shows mathematical talent at the age of 7 and feels bored at school. Her uncle Frank thinks that she should stay in her normal school. However, Mary's grandmother Evelyn believes that Mary is a genius who should be tutored(辅导)in mathematics.
The reason for their conflict comes from Frank's sister. She was also a promising mathematician, but killed herself when Mary was six months old. She suffered from Evelyn's suppression(压制)throughout her life. Frank doesn't want the same thing to happen to Mary. After many talks and struggles, Mary goes to stay with Frank and takes college-level courses while playing with kids of her own age.
The narration(叙事)of this movie is not complex, but the theme it tries to express is very controversial(有争议的). We can't say the Evelyn-style education is wrong. It can help gifted children to maximize their ability. But a natural gift can sometimes be a source of stress, as it can make children feel too different from kids of their own age. The emphasis(强调)on their talent can lead to social isolation(社交孤立)and mental health problems. Many historical geniuses, including English mathematician Sir Isaac Newton and English writer Virginia Woolf, had similar problems. I'm glad that by the end of movie, Mary finds a way to balance her talent and her childhood.
58. What does the writer think about being a genius?
A. She wants to be a genius.
B. She doesn't want to be a genius.
C. She doesn't know if she would want to be one or not.
D. She wants her sister to be a genius.

A. Trouble with Talent. B. A Girl's Story.
C. A meaningless Movie. D. Grandma's Education.

One day at noon, a 10-year-old boy was walking along the street with his uncle. Suddenly, the boy disappeared—he fell into manhole(井). His uncle called for help, but it was too late. The boy was already dead. There should have been a cover over the manhole, but it had been removed. This tragedy(悲剧)happened in Wuhan last year. And it was not the only one.
The theft(偷窃)of manhole covers has been a big problem in China. According to CCTV News, there were over 70 injuries or deaths due to broken or stolen manhole covers from 2017 to 2019. To prevent such tragedies Chinas' top judicial(司法)bodies introduced strict punishments in April or those who remove or damage manhole covers. The maximum sentence(最高刑罚)is the death penalty(死刑), Xinhua reported.
"This move will better ensure people's safety when walking on roads or driving, " Xu Hao, a lawyer from the Beijing Jingshi Law Firm, told China Daily.
"Many of those who have stolen manhole covers have done so in order to sell them for scrap(废弃的)metal. Some taxi drivers have also removed the covers to get water to clean their cars, China Daily noted. If people know removing manhole covers will be seriously punished, it is possible that it will happen less often and prevent tragedies, " Xu added.
In fact, this kind of theft doesn't only happen in China. The problem is also common in other developing countries. For example, people in India also suffer from manhole cover theft, as the covers can also be sold for scrap metal there. The country has huge need for metals that are used in industries like construction(建筑), Vox reported.

When talking about how children spend their free time, most children choose to spend their down time in many ways.
Active Play
73 For younger kids this can mean just going outside and literally running around in circles. Games are popular for the younger set(一伙人). For older children, active play might be a little more focused(专注的). Some kids are going to go into sports; they might spend their time playing football, baseball or basketball. 74
Inactive Play
Even the youngest kids aren't going to be able to run around all the time. 75 Parents should allow kids to play as much as humanly possible, as long as they are doing it in a healthy way. When they have free time, this kind of play should always be encouraged. Of course, even the most active mind also needs a break every now and then.
Rest and Relaxation
76 Resting and relaxing can mean a whole host of(许多)different ways to while away(消磨)the hours. Settling down with a good book is certainly one way to spend some time in a fun and productive way.
Of course if kids don't feel like they have the time to read a book, there are always audio(音频的)books. 77 However, allowing children to watch a movie on the sofa isn't going to be good for them. The same goes for playing video games.
A. This way they can do something else while they listen to their favorite author.
B. Kids choose to play these sports because they have free time.
C. Watching a movie is another way in which kids might spend their time.
D. This is more than just lying down and taking a short sleep.
E. Because it will mean making it harder when the free time is over.
F. Depending on the age of the children, active play is going to take different forms.
G. Once their energy is burn out(耗尽), they can play inside with toys and games.

As we grow, not only did I have happy time, but I had many kinds of problems. I used to have difficulties with my parents. They wanted me to spend all my time on my lessons. They didn’t allow me to play computer games or have outdoor activities with my friends.
I couldn’t stand the strict rules! So I wrote a letter and told my parents I knew it was important to do well in schoolwork. I would make good use of the time and try to do well in schoolwork first. After a long talk with my parents, they agreed that I could have spare time and do something I like.
Now I have realized communications with our parents is a good way to solve our problems.
