I think supermarkets are interesting places. They are packed with thousands of different kinds of goods and products. There is an army of workers making sure the shelves are stocked and everything looks nice. And the prices are usually cheap. The only thing I don’t like about supermarkets is when I have to pay. I hate waiting in line at the check-outs. Another thing I hate is when I get a trolly with a wobbly wheel. I really like going to supermarkets in different countries. Each country has very different things. In England, you’ll see a huge cheese section; in Japan, you’ll see a whole aisle selling seaweed; in the Middle East, you’ll see shelves and shelves of dates and olives; and my favourite is India and the hundreds of colourful spices.
    Part B——Shopping
Shopping must be one of the world’s most popular hobbies. I hate it. There’s nothing more boring than wandering around shopping malls. What a waste of time. I know a lot of people who like window shopping – just walking around shops without wanting to buy anything. Crazy! My plan for shopping is ‘quickly in, quickly out’. If I have to go shopping, I go in the morning on a weekday. This is when the stores are empty and you can get what you want quickly, without thousands of other shoppers getting in your way. The worst time to go shopping is on a Saturday afternoon during sale season. It seems as though all of the world’s bargain hunters are in the same store as you. I was happy when online shopping came along. This is very relaxing.

M: I’ll go to work by subway from tomorrow on.
W: Why? You always drive to work.
M: It’s so convenient to take a subway though it may not be as comfortable as a car.
    Text 2
W: So much rubbish! See it?
M: But where do these go?
W: These are household food wastes. You need to put them in the green bin outside.
    Text 3
W: The room attendant delivered some laundry to my room, but it’s not mine. Mine is a dark blue silk dress.
M: Sorry about the mistake. We’ll deliver the right one to you right away.
    Text 4
W: Come in, please, Jack. I’m just getting ready to go home.
M: Sorry, Ms. Kim, I forgot to hand this in just now.
W: That’s OK. Put it here and remember to review what we’ve learnt today.
    Text 5
W: So you work in London. What do you do there?
M: I am an assistant at a government office.
    W: Oh, sounds important.
    Text 6
    W: Hello, Qin Dynasty.
M: Hi. I want to get some takeout.
W: Yeah, what would you like?
M: The Kung Pao Chicken and fried eggs.
    W: No problem.
M: Does that come with rice?
    W: No, I’m sorry.
M: Add one serving of rice, please.
W: OK. Is that all? Some drinks?
    M: No, thanks.
W: No problem. That will be 30 dollars.
M: When will it be ready?
    W: About twenty-five minutes.
    M: Alright, see you then.
    Text 7
W: The weather report says it’ll turn fine this weekend.
M: Good news! I really don’t like the rain. So glad that the weather will finally clear up.
W: Yes. What about taking the kids to the West Lake this weekend?
M: What can kids do there?
W: It is home to the West Lake Kids Market. The Kids Market is home to both shops and an indoor adventure playground. There is also an outdoor playground for sunny days.
    M: Anything else?
W: There are also theaters, live performances and the free West Lake Park. In one word, there are lots of activities for kids of all ages in all types of weather.
M: Good. Let’s tell Tom and Eliza about that tonight. I’m sure they’ll be wild with joy.
W: Yes. They really hate staying at home on the weekend.
    Text 8
M: Hello, again, everyone. Last week we invited the American writer Norah Levy to talk about how our position in the family affects our personality. She discussed the first born child’s personality with us. Today we invite her to continue the topic. Now let’s welcome Norah.
    W: Thank you, everybody.
M: So, Norah, what are the personalities of the middle children?
W: Well, they depend on themselves and they are usually competitive.
    M: Competitive?
W: Yes, because they have to fight with their brothers and sisters for their parents’ attention. And they like being with people because they always have other children to play with.
    M: And the youngest children?
W: If you’re the youngest in a family, you’ll probably be quite a relaxed person. On the other hand, the youngest children are often unwilling to do something for other members. This is because they always have their older brothers and sisters to help them.
M: That’s interesting. Thank you, Norah.
    Text 9
M: How can I get to the downtown movie theater, Rose?
    W: You’re going to watch a movie?
M: Yeah, I have asked Jennifer out for the coming Saturday night.
W: Good. But why not ask her out for the live concert? It’s on this Thursday and Friday night, and it’s much more interesting.
M: She doesn’t have time on weekdays, you know.
W: Alright. Anyway, the directions: first, drive down 1st Street, going west until you reach Pine Street. Then turn left, and the movie theater is the second building on the right.
M: Got it. Can you recommend any nice restaurants?
W: The Blue Flamingo serves excellent Spanish food. Starting from the movie theater, go south on Pine Street, cross 2nd Street, and you’ll get to Palm Street. The restaurant is there.
M: Okay. Is it open late?
W: It’s open on weekdays from 9:00 in the morning to 9:30 at night, but it stays open half an hour later on weekends.
    Text 10
M: The Boryeong Mud Festival takes place during the summer on Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, about 190 km southwest of Seoul, South Korea. It attracts about 2.2 million visitors around the world to Boryeong every year. The festival was first held in 1998, and its 24th 10-day version was held here, which began on July 23, 2021. Many tourists took part in the grand festival. This year’s festival mixed online and offline events, which were different from the ones held before. Every year, during the festival, visitors take part in activities such as mud sliding and swimming in the mud pool. A large stage is set on the beach, which is used for music performances, competitions and many other activities. Boryeong is famous for its wide mudflats formed along the western coast, with its high-quality mud that is rich in minerals known to help prevent skin aging. Making use of this, the central South Korean city has organized the mud festival as part of efforts to promote its natural materials among international tourists.

W: You look so excited. What is the good news?
M: I was informed that I was admitted to my dream university.
W: Congratulations to you. By the way, who told you the good news?
M: The staff in the university sent me an email.
    Text 2
M: Will you come to my birthday party?
W: Can I come a little later? I've got something important to work on tonight.
M: How late will you be? The party will begin at 8:00 pm.
W: I will be late for 20 minutes.

    Text 3
M: Do you like listening to music? And how?
W: Yes, I usually listen to music on my phone or my computer.
M: How much time a day do you spend listening to music?
W: As long as I am free, such as riding a bike, taking a bus and so on.
    Text 4
M: What do you think of Lily?
W: She's not only thoughtful but also very understanding. She's always by my side to cheer me up whenever I'm in trouble.
M: Do you share anything in common with her?
W: Yes, a lot. We both love shopping and playing sports.
    Text 5
M: Where did you stay last summer when you travelled in Xiamen?
W: I stayed in a family hotel near the sea.
M: Why did you choose to stay in that hotel instead of a five-star hotel?
W: It is comfortable, and all the reviews online about the hotel are positive.
    Text 6
W: Do you like going to live football matches?
M: Oh, yes, I love it.
W: Is it better than watching them on TV?
M: Well, you don't really see as much as you do on TV.
W: Oh, why do so many people go to live matches?
M: That's different. On TV you don't really feel the atmosphere. You can't sing along with the chants and songs at home.
    Text 7
M: Good morning. This is City Bus Company.
W: Good morning. I wonder if you could help me. I've lost my handbag.
M: Oh, when did it happen? Are you sure you've lost it on our bus?
W: Well, yesterday afternoon I went home from work on the No.22 bus. When I got off the bus, I left my handbag on the bus.
    M: Can you describe it?
W: Well, it's a brown fur handbag. Err, there is a bank card and some change in it.
M: I am afraid we haven't got anything like that. Perhaps someone took it away when you got off the bus. But we'll try our best to look for it for you.
    W: Thank you very much.
    Text 8
M: Mom, I have something to say. Can Spotty be in the family picture, too?
W: Oh, he cannot. You know, dogs are pets; they are not family.
M: But Spotty is older than I am!
W: So what? That still doesn't make him a human.
M: Sometimes it seems like he can talk. Why not regard him as a member of our family?
W: I said no, so the answer is no.
M: What if we put a hat on him?
W: Why would you want to do that?
M: Because if he puts a hat, he'll just look like my little brother.
W: You're really attached to him, aren't you?
M: Yes! I like him. And he's like a part of the family, too.
W: All right, he may be in the photo, but no hat!
    Text 9
M: Jenny, in another interview we were talking about foods that we don't like. Now let's talk about activities or things we don't like to do.
    W: Okay.
M: Washing dishes, ironing clothes, mowing the lawn, things like that.
    W: Alright.
M: Are there any other activities you really dislike doing?
W: Well, you mentioned washing dishes. I don't like that one.
    M: Oh, really?
W: I'd much rather mow the lawn than wash dishes.
    M: Why?
W: I guess, it's just the idea of touching dirty plates that everyone ate off and then they sat at the sink for a couple of hours. And, it grosses me out.
    M: Yeah. That's interesting because I'm actually… like… I don't like cooking. I hate to cook but I don't mind doing the clean-up.
    Text 10
Everyone has a natural sleep routine. You go to bed and wake up at a certain time. But everyone's routine is not the same. Some people--the early birds--go to bed early at night (around 9:00 or 10:00 pm). In the morning, they wake up easily and are energetic. Others--the night owls--stay awake late (until midnight or later). For them, it is difficult to wake up early. What do we know about early birds and night owls? Here is what studies show.
Teenagers are natural night owls. Also, most need nine to ten hours' sleep a night. But in many places, the school or work day starts at 8:00 am. For this reason, only one in five teenagers sleeps enough. More early birds get good grades in school, but night owls do better on some intelligence tests, according to a study of 1,000 Spanish teens. People with high scores on these tests usually get good jobs.
