I was beginning to grow handsome. My coat was bright and black, I had one white foot and a pretty white star on my forehead. When I was four, Squire Gordon decided to buy me. Then Farmer Grey began to break me in.
Like all horses that have grown up, I had to wear gears(用具). The first is a bit and bridle. I hated wearing a bit in my mouth. It was horrible, like a metal finger between my teeth. The saddle was not so bad. One morning, my master rode me round the meadow. I was proud to carry him, and I soon got used to it. But I didn’t like the iron shoes. They were very stiff and heavy on my feet. But in time I got used to that too.
My mother told me, “There are good men like our master, but there are bad men too. I hope you have good masters. But remember: always do your best.”
Early in May, a man came to take me away to Squire Gordon’s house, in the village of Birtwick. My new stable(马厩) was large and comfortable. There was a little fat grey pony next to me. His name was Merrylegs. And I also found a tall chestnut horse at the comer of the stable, quiet.
“That’s Ginger,” Merrylegs told me. “She bites. One day she bit James, the groom(马夫). She says no one was kind to her before. But James and John, our grooms, are very good to us, and Squire Gordon doesn’t whip (鞭打) his horses, so I think she’s going to like it here.”
The next morning, John took me for a ride. On the way back, we met Squire Gordon and Mrs.Gordon.
“Well, John, how does he go?” the Squire asked.
“Excellent, sir.” John answered.

Because of a sudden rise of COVID-19 cases in several Chinese cities, the country is making COVID-19 antigen test kits (抗原检测试剂盒) available (可获得的) for self-testing, CGTN reported. All made by local companies, the kits can be bought in stores and online.
Antigen tests are used to test for COVID-19. But they work differently from the nucleic acid tests(核酸检测) that we are all familiar with. “Antigen is like the ‘clothes’ of the virus, while nucleic acid is the gene (基因) of the virus,” said Zhang Wenhong, head of the infectious disease department (感染科) at Fudan University’s Huashan Hospital.
The antigen tests are beneficial (有利的) because they produce results faster, in around 15 minutes, and don’t require a lab. People can use them in their own homes at their convenience.
But they aren’t as accurate (准确的). “In the early stage of infection, the amount of virus can be very low,” Zhang said. “The nucleic acid test can detect (检测) it but an antigen test cannot.”
According to the National Health Commission, three categories (类别) of people will be able to take an antigen test. They are people who have had a fever or respiratory symptoms (呼吸道症状) within five days, people undergoing centralized or home isolation (隔离), and other people who just want to take a test.
People who test positive (阳性) with the antigen kits will be treated as COVID-19 cases and must contact local authorities (当地相关部门) immediately, said the State Council. They will need to undergo centralized quarantine (隔离) and have regular(常规的)nucleic acid tests, reported China Daily.
At this time, China is sticking to its zero-COVID policy. With the Omicron variant (奥密克戎变异株) producing more asymptomatic (无症状的) cases, it is hoped that the introduction of antigen tests will help authorities to find infected people more rapidly, said Zhang.
56. Antigen test kits are available to ______.
A. reduce test costs B. speed up testing
C. make the test more comfortable D. make results more accurate
57. In Paragraph 2, Zhang Wenhong explains ______.

B. what kind of people can use antigen test kits
C. the advantages and disadvantages of antigen tests
D. the difference between antigen tests and nucleic acid tests
58. Compared with nucleic acid tests, antigen tests ______.
a. produce faster results b. should be done in a lab
c. can be done on one’s own d. are more accurate
A. ab B. ac C. bc D. cd
59. According to China Daily, ______.
A. COVID-19 cases can only be confirmed by nucleic acid tests
B. a positive result from an antigen test might be COVID-19
C. positive cases from antigen tests will not receive proper treatment
D. the results of antigen kits are not trusted
60. What is the purpose of the new actions?
A. To avoid the spread of the virus. B. To study the Omicron variant.
C. To develop more medical products. D. To recover China's connection with the world.

“Welcome to our new ‘classroom’!” said Chen Dong, one of the three astronauts of the Shenzhou XIV mission (神舟十四号任务).
They were giving a science class 400 kilometers above Earth on Oct 12. It was the third space class from the Tiangong space station, but the first one from the Wentian lab module (实验舱) since its launch in July. The former two classes were held in the Tianhe core module (核心舱).
What does the new “classroom” look like? Chen, together with Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, showed us around. “The beds in the Tianhe module are placed horizontally(横着), while our beds are kept upright,” said Liu. That means astronauts in the Wentian lab module need to sleep standing up! But as Liu explained, people don’t feel any difference because there’s no gravity (重力) in space. Astronauts can even sleep on the ceiling (天花板) or upside down!
The astronauts also showed their “space farm”, where lettuce, wheat(小麦), thale cress(拟南芥)and rice are grown. “Take a picture!” “Send the picture!” Through a voice-controlled camera, Chen already sent a picture of the thale cress to scientists on Earth. Then he used scissors to cut a sample(样本). “I’ll put it into a fridge at - 80℃ and later give it to scientists on Earth,” said Chen.Scientists will study how the environment of space affects the growth of plants.
“Can you see the water drops coming from the leaves? This is called ‘guttation’ (植物吐水现象),” said Liu, holding the well-grown rice. In space, the water drops are much bigger than those on Earth. So people can clearly see the guttation.
“We hope in the near future, we can harvest (收获) the food grown on our own,” said Chen. “Maybe one day, we can harvest food on the other planets like moon or even Mars!”
61. Where did the third space class take place?
A. In the Shenzhou XIV. B. In the Tianhe core module.
C. In the Wentian lab module. D. In the International Space Station.
62. How do astronauts in the Wentian module sleep?
63. How do scientists on Earth study the plants in the space station?
A. By watching them through real-time video cameras.
B. By taking and collecting pictures themselves.
C. By growing the plants in space themselves.
D. By studying the samples astronauts bring back.
64. What was shown in the third class in the Tiangong space station?
A. Cooking. B. The space farm.
C. Astronauts harvesting food. D. The surface tension of water.
65. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Farmers can get crops on moons soon.
B. Scientists will try to grow food on moons or even Mars.
C. Lettuce, wheat(小麦), thale cress (拟南芥) will be grown on other planets, too.
D. ‘Guttation’ can be seen from leaves of rice.

Do you know the importance of Chinese culture? In fact, the “rice bow!” culture of China has also played a role in some Asian 76 (country) such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam since human beings started to use chopsticks (筷子) 77 they are eating food.
Chopsticks are usually two long thin pieces of wood or bamboo. They can also be 78 (make) of plastic, animal’s bone or metal. The most important thing is that chopsticks are great inventions (发明) in ancient China.
When did people start to use chopsticks? Maybe five 79 (thousand) years ago, people usually cooked their food in large pots, using sticks to take 80 away. Later, people found it difficult to eat all the food and began 81 (cut) the food into small pieces. Food in small pieces could be eaten 82 (easy) with twigs (细枝) by people. And twigs were changed into chopsticks little by little.
Some people think that the famous Confucius (孔子) who lived 83 about 551 BC to 479 BC pushed the development of chopsticks. Nobody likes making mistakes. But, no one is perfect. If you can learn from mistakes correctly, they can move you forward. Therefore, we should find out how you can learn from them.
If you have made mistakes that harm other people, it is important to offer a sincere apology (道歉) in person. A good apology will likely make the other person understand you. If you refuse to apologize, the person hurt by you will hold it against you.
If you go through life afraid to make a mistake, you will spend most of your life doing nothing. People usually make mistakes. There is no harm in making mistakes, and it is a necessary part of going forward. The more duties you take, the more likely you will make mistakes.
Unluckily, it is our natural instinct (本能) to justify(为……辩解) our actions. When you make a mistake, you will first blame (责备) someone else. When mistakes are made, the boss is unlikely to be interested in your words. Sometimes it is best to say, very simply—yes, I made a mistake.
Mistakes happen for different reasons. To avoid repeating them, you need to find the main reason. For example, you may have made a mistake by saying some unkind words. If you make mistakes because you are tired, try to get more sleep; if you are stressed, look at ways to relax and keep away from the stress of work.
You should avoid feeling guilty about making mistakes, but at the same time, you should make a decision to learn from them. If you repeat the same mistakes, it shows you aren’t making progress and they cause repeating trouble. Often mistakes are caused by bad habits. To avoid making the same mistakes, you need to break these bad habits. The sooner, the better.

A book impressed me most
Books introduce me to a new world, which is colourful and wonderful, without limitation of time and space. I get most of my knowledge from books. They open my mind and bring me much joy. And the book which impressed me most is called the Ordinary World written by Lu Yao.
This book describes people struggling to live in a small village through simple words. From this book I learned people should maintain an optimistic attitude when they are in trouble and poverty. Although we are ordinary people, we can try our best to have a bright future.
I was attracted by the book as soon as I read it. It had a great influence on me. It gives me courage and confidence to take on challenges in my life. I believe anything in life is worth overdoing.
In the future, I hope I can improve myself by my own strength just like the main characters in this book. I believe the man who has made up his mind and put his effort into something will succeed at last.
