Due to social events in recent years, the relationship between social media and teenagers mental health has been under heated discussion.
On Sept 30, a British court decided that content on social media platforms contributed to the depression of 14-year-old Molly Russell. Russell interacted with 2,100 posts related to pessimistic, self-harm in the six months, leading up to her depression, reported the Observer website.
The correlation has also been proved by science. A study in 2019 showed that the frequent use of social media by teenagers can lead to a decrease in their mental health.
So, how can we make sure that teenagers won’t get hurt while using social media? Chan, 18, from the University of Macao shared her experience. Chan said that she once came across short videos romanticizing mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. She immediately reported them to the platform.
But she said that the users’ power to regulate videos is still limited. “It is ultimately the responsibility of the social media platforms to filter out content that is potentially harmful.” She also noticed that the age of social media users has become increasingly younger. Society should pay attention to this, she said. “Since it’s not possible to cut off access to social media for younger users, why not introduce a ‘supervision mode’ with which parents can regulate the content to be viewed by teenagers beforehand?” she said.
Wu Chengyu, 18, studies at Tianjin Experimental High School. He said that several years ago he came across a game that lures teenagers to self-abuse and depression. He quickly chose to ignore it so he wouldn’t be influenced. This is the same way he reacts when exposed to negative content on social media.
In Wu’s opinion, teenagers today should improve their social media literacy(素养), telling real from fake and good from bad. “Also, everyone can be a content creator on social media.” he said, “We should all strengthen our awareness of ethics”.
4.What led to Russell’s depression according to a British court?
    A.Her interaction with others online.
B.Negative information on social media platforms.
C.Short videos she watched on the Internet.
    D.Her addiction to online posts.
5.Which of the following statements does Chan probably agree with?
A.The number of younger social media users should be limited.
B.Parents should monitor the content to be viewed by teenagers in advance.
C.A supervision mode ought to be introduced by parents.
D.It is the responsibility of the society to romanticize mental illnesses.
6.Who should be ultimately responsible for removing negative content according to Chan?
    A.Parents. B.Internet users.
    C.Content creators. D.Social media platforms.
7.What does Wu suggest teenagers should do?
A.Use social media wisely. B.Reduce social media usage.
C.Stay away from online games. D.Learn more about social media.

China’s birthrate has dropped to its lowest level since 1978. Data released by the country’s national bureau of statistics shows there were 8.5 births per 1,000 people in 2020, the first time in decades that the figure has fallen below 10. The statistical yearbook, released at the weekend, said the natural rate of population growth-taking in births and deaths—was at a new low of 1.45.
The government is under pressure to prevent a potential population decline after decades of policies on childbirth and more recent pressures including high living costs. It did not give reasons for the dramatic drop, but demographers (人口统计学家) have previously pointed to the relatively low number of women of child-bearing age and the rising cost of raising a family.
Governments and local authorities have introduced a series of policies seeking to turn around the trend, from relaxing limits on having children, to easing costs associated with education and child raising, and introducing mandatory (强制的)“cooling off” periods for divorces. China’s yearbook revealed a fall in divorces for the first time since at least 1985, to about 4.3m, though there were also fewer marriages, 8.14m, compared with 9. 27m the year before.
But it appears the government’s policies have so far failed to adequately address young people’s concerns about the costs associated with having children. What the Chinese government is doing has already been done by the Japanese government, and the former is not as rich as the latter. Japan can provide free healthcare and education, but China can’t.
Yao Meixiong, a demographics expert and adjunct professor at Huaqiao University’s school of economics and finance, told the local outlet Jiemian that the low levels of desire to have children was a wake-up call for China’s development.
“The response to the population crisis is in a race against time, and measures to encourage childbirth must speed up,” Yao said.
8.According to the text, what might be a cause of the potential population decline in China?
A.High costs of child raising. B.The decreasing family income.
C.Relaxed limits on having children. D.The low number of women wanting children.
9.Why is the Japanese government mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To stress the importance of a country’s wealth.
B.To praise the success of the Japanese government.
C.To show the weakness of the Chinese government’s policies.
D.To compare the Chinese and Japanese government’s welfare systems.
10.What is Yao Meixiong’s attitude towards the low birthrate in China?
    A.Tolerant. B.Concerned. C.Hopeful. D.Favorable.
11.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Chinese Government Seeks to Increase Population
B.China’s Yearbook Shows Low Population Growth
C.Experts Analyze the Reasons for the Low Birthrate
D.Chinese Birthrate Falls to Lowest Level in Decades

Memories are such an important part of us. Some people are more forgetful by nature. Others may start having difficulties remembering things as they get older, especially when there are memory-related diseases like Alzheimer’s(阿尔茨海默症) in their family. That’s why classes like Breaking Grounds in Drumming, a program by Tony Bennett and Chris Lavidas that uses instruments and music techniques to help senior students drum up memories are so important.
The process of creating a memory, preserving it and being able to recover it as needed is a complex one. Our brains need to get the information, translate it into a usable piece of data and then store it in a way that allows us to access it when necessary. Sound frequency, explains Making Music Mag, published by a community that connects music makers, is the internal communication system of the brain. Different frequencies activate particular parts of the brain. By tapping areas of the brain linked to memory and emotions with the correct technique, in this case through music-and drumming, a person can then gain access to past events that would otherwise be lost.
Bennett and Lavidas created their program specifically for seniors in assisted living residences and memory care communities. Through this program, some of the seniors with Alzheimer’s can start to recover and preserve some of their lost memories. No experience is necessary to join these classes, and the benefits include intellectual and cognitive stimulation as well as enhanced hand-eye coordination. Besides, it is also an enjoyable hobby and allows the seniors to get some much needed social interaction too. The drumming sessions are engaging and require constant participation, from the students, which helps to stimulate their minds in many ways.
The organization estimates it has educated thousands of seniors over the past ten years. And although Alzheimer’s and dementia are conditions whose causes are still currently unknown, they have been able to find a helpful and enjoyable way for patients to make the most of living with their conditions.
12.What is the purpose of the program?
A.To inspire the elders’ love for music.
    B.To spread knowledge about Alzheimer’s.
C.To assist seniors in recovering their memories.
D.To design instruments to help with students’ studies.
13.What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.Music can help prevent memory loss for most people.
B.Music has a close link with the memory parts of our brains.
C.Highly emotional stimulation may lead to memory disorders.
D.Sound frequency decides how long a memory can be preserved.
14.According to the text, what does the underlined word “stimulate” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A.change B.wake C.control D.weaken
15.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The popularity of the music program. B.The difficulties of seniors living alone.
C.Benefits of the program for participants. D.Ways to improve memories for the elderly.

Thanksgiving Foods That Are Poisonous to Cats and Dogs
Thanksgiving is a time to feast and spend time with family-which includes your cats, dogs, and other pets. 16
Can cats and dogs eat turkey? According to the American Kennel Club, it depends. As it turns out, turkey isn’t actually “poisonous” for your companion, rather, its additional flavorings like butter, oil, stuffing, herbs, and spices are what may result in an upset stomach. 17
18 “No matter what form they’re in (dry, raw, cooked, powder, or within other foods), onions are some of the absolute worst foods you could possibly give your pup (it’s poisonous for dogs, and it’s even worse for cats),” says Sadie Cornelius, Marketing Director for Canine Journal. Your safest bet? Skip the onion altogether.
One of the best parts of Thanksgiving? Dessert! 19 . An ingredient in chocolate called theobromine, which is similar to caffeine, is extremely poisonous for cats and dogs. This may result in vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures (痉挛)—it can even be fatal.
Mushrooms? Well, at least wild mushrooms. Store-bought mushrooms are OK to feed to your pet, but stay away from wild mushrooms. “Just as the wrong mushroom can be fatal to humans, the same applies to dogs and cats,” says Cornelius. “Don’t mess with them.” 20 .
Make sure you properly dispose of food wrappings like aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and wax paper. While licking up food left on these wrappings pets can ingest some of the wrapper, leading to intestinal obstructions.
A.Stick to dog biscuits and kitty treats instead of this sugary food.
B.Unfortunately, you can’t share your chocolate bar with your pets.
C.But before you let them eat something off your plate, you may want to think twice.
D.Just take a good care of your pets during the festival.
E.Of course, all meat should be well cooked and always boneless.
F.Instead, check out the food before feeding your pets.
G.Onions are a huge no-no when it comes to cats and dogs.

On Dec. 20, Mello called his mother on FaceTime, which he does every day after school. That afternoon, Mello broke down in tears the moment his mother, Anita James, answered the phone.
“Mello, what happened?” James asked her son on the phone while typing something in the computer.
“I’m getting tired of them bullying (欺凌) my friend about his shoes. It’s making me so upset,” he responded in a serious voice, explaining that his classmates made fun of his friend Melvin for having worn-out muddy sneakers.
James listened to Mello’s narration with a thoughtful expression. Then, Mello earnestly asked, “Can we go buy him some shoes?”
James told her son they would talk about it when she got home from work. During their in-person conversation a few hours later, James found her son still upset. At last, Mello decided to buy his friend a fresh pair of sneakers to get rid of bullies and remind him that he has people who care about him.
“Can I use my pocket money, or you can take something away that I would get for Christmas?” Mello asked his mother.
The sincere request from her son hit James for many reasons, including that when she was growing up, her older brother used to buy her sneakers when her parents couldn’t afford them. Now, in their adult lives, James buys her brother a pair of sneakers for his birthday every year to show her gratitude. James was so touched by her little boy’s. genuine care for his friend and she knew how it would matter to the poor kid, Melvin.

根据第三段中“Through this program, some of the seniors with Alzheimer’s can start to recover and preserve some of their lost memories. No experience is necessary to join these classes, and the benefits include intellectual and cognitive stimulation as well as enhanced hand-eye coordination. Besides, it is also an enjoyable hobby and allows the seniors to get some much needed social interaction too. (通过这个项目,一些老年痴呆症患者可以开始恢复并保留一些失去的记忆。参加这些课程不需要经验,其好处包括智力和认知刺激以及增强手眼协调能力。此外,它也是一个令人愉快的爱好,并允许老年人得到一些急需的社会互动。)”可知,本段讲述了该项目对参与者的好处。故选C项。

This may result in vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures (痉挛)—it can even be fatal.(巧克力中有一种叫做可可碱的成分,类似于咖啡因,对猫和狗来说是剧毒的。 ,因此不能给猫和狗吃巧克力,B选项“Unfortunately, you can’t share your chocolate bar with your pets.(不幸的是,你不能和宠物分享你的巧克力棒。)”
20.空前说“Store-bought mushrooms are OK to feed to your pet, but stay away from wild mushrooms. “Just as the wrong mushroom can be fatal to humans, the same applies to dogs and cats,” says Cornelius. “Don’t mess with them.”(商店里买的蘑菇可以喂给你的宠物,但要远离野生蘑菇。科尼利厄斯说:“就像错误的蘑菇可能对人类致命一样,这同样适用于狗和猫。”“别惹它们。”)”,说明有的蘑菇可以给宠物,有的不行,因此要在喂之前搞清楚,F选项“Instead, check out the food before feeding your pets.(相反,在喂宠物之前检查一下食物。)”

    Dear Tom,
Delighted to know that you expect to experience Chinese culture during this summer holiday trip in China, I’d like to recommend the following activities to you.
Visiting a Chinese school is a great way to catch a glimpse of what’s like to study under the Chinese system which is quite different from yours. Never miss the chance of cooking Chinese dishes in a local home to experience the differences in meal preparation, cooking techniques, and even the way food is eaten. Some traditional Chinese games like Chinese chess, Chinese jump rope, Jacks passed down from ancient pastimes are worth trying in a park.
I do hope you can immerse yourself in the culture tour based on my recommendation. Welcome to China!
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    47.One possible version:
Before class began, Mello handed his friend the orange Nike box in private. When told it was a gift for him, Melvin was totally shocked and immensely touched at such a nice gesture from his friend. Mello beamed with a warm smile on his face, as if he had anticipated Melvin’s reaction, and whispered in his friend’s ear that there would be no more teasing from other kids about his worn-out shoes. After weeks of getting constant smirks about his sneakers, Melvin couldn’t wait to put on his new shoes. Looking at the shiny Nike shoes on Melvin’s feet, Mello was overjoyed.
Bryant Brown, the school’s social studies teacher, spotted the shoe box on Melvin’s desk. He asked Melvin for the backstory. It brought the teacher to tears. After asking for the two boys’ consent, he decided to share the story on Facebook, hoping it might inspire others. The post got thousands of likes, shares and comments. Brown was stunned by the response. He is now planning to launch an anti-bullying campaign in the coming weeks. Hundreds of students, parents and teachers have signed up for the activity with the hope that there’s no place in the world for bullies and Mello’s helping hand always lives on.
