In England, people used to stand on the right of escalators(扶梯), allowing others to walk on the left. But there is some change to this rule. People can stand on both sides of escalators at Holborn station. As one of the busiest stations of London Underground, Holborn was the first station in the country to ask travelers to stand on both the right and left sides of escalators. The test which lasted for three weeks showed that standing on both sides actually reduced(减少)congestion by 30 percent—16 , 220 people an hour are able to travel on the escalator during rush hours compared to the usual 12 ,745 when both standing and walking are allowed.
Transport for London (TfL) hopes the new standing rule will make the most of wasted space on longer escalators, where most people choose to wait on the right. Your parents might often tell you that strangers can be dangerous. That’s true. Some strangers are bad and you should be careful around them. But some strangers are good. They can help you when you are in trouble.

    (四)(2022·河南信阳·统考二模)
Imagine you’re taking an exam, and that you find it difficult to answer those questions. And time’s running out. Would you waste the little chance that you get to cheat? Probably, some of us have once cheated in the test.
Certainly, it’s not correct. It’s important to follow the rules because the world would turn into a total mess without rules. However, with time passing by and the development of the society, some rules have become barriers(障碍) to people’s success. A famous person once said, “We have so many rules in life about everything. But it’s impossible to be a creator if you’re too well—behaved. You have to think outside the box.” Some are created to restrain people, and some become old and boring. So sometimes, it’s okay to break the rules. In 1823, William Webb Ellis was a pupil at Rugby School. He was tired of playing football in the old way, so the player took the ball in his arms and ran with it during a school football match, In this way, he started a new sport: rugby(英式橄榄球), named after his school.
Since you’ve already known why someone wants to break the rules, now you need to learn how to do it.
Learn the rules first. Qi Baishi is a talented Chinese artist, but he spent much time learning traditional drawing and painting skills before he found his own styles. Master it before you break it—that’s what you can learn from great minds.
Evaluate(评估) if the result is worth it. Each person has his own values. Before breaking the rules, think over whether it will go against your values. And the moment you decide to do that, you must be ready to have a wise thought to face the bad results.
41.How does the author develop the passage?
A.By asking questions. B.By giving some examples.
C.By telling stories. D.By introducing some facts.
42.What does the writer think about rules?
A.Rules are created to support people. B.All of the rules go against our values.
C.Some rules can stop people’s success. D.Rules don’t become old and boring.
43.What does the underlined word “restrain” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A.Save. B.Control. C.Care. D.Trust.
44.What can we know from “Qi Baishi” according to the text?
A.We should master the rules before we break them. B.It’s important to follow the rules.
C.We have to think outside the box. D.Why someone wants to break the rules.
45.What is the best title for the passage?
A.How to Break the Rules B.Ways to Follow the Rules
C.Think Outside the Box D.Think Twice Before Breaking the Rules
    四、阅读填表(每小题1分,共10分)(2021春·江苏南京·八年级期中)
    阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容,在文章后的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
    注意:每个空格只填1个单词。
Nowadays, many people in China and Japan are racing against time. They put a lot of value in “being on time”. However, in some countries of the world, people have different opinions on “being on time”.
    Germany
Thanks to its industrial past, in Germany you are expected to arrive at least ten minutes earlier for any planned meeting. In Germany, being on time is risky enough because your hosts will probably already be there waiting, wondering how on earth you could be so stupid. What will you do if anything unexpected happens, like heavy traffic or a sudden rain? So remember to arrive early in Germany.
    Saudi Arabia
Some countries care little about time and Saudi Arabia is one of them. It’s because of their long history of desert living where time is not the first thing to think about. It could be that it’s too hot to do anything on time. So don’t expect them to be on time. Moreover, looking at your watch during an event is even considered as bad manners. So don’t get angry with them, either.
    Ghana
Most meeting times can be changed, even if an exact time is given. Ghanaians are very easygoing. They think that if everyone is late, then no one is late. After all, what can’t be done today can get done tomorrow. If you find it difficult to deal with, prepare to be unhappy.
    Russia
Patience is considered a very important quality in Russian culture but being on time is not. When doing business in Russia, do be on time. Otherwise, it will be considered disrespectful. But Russians won’t hold themselves to the same standard. So, again, patience can be key.
How differently people ______46______ “being on time” in different countries
