A crow lived in the forest and was very satisfied with his life. But one day he saw a swan. “This swan is so white,” he thought, “and I am so black. This swan must be the happiest bird in the world!”
He expressed his thoughts to the swan. “Actually,” the swan replied, “I was feeling that I was the happiest bird around until I saw a parrot, which has two colors. I now think it is the happiest bird in the world.” The crow then came to the parrot. The parrot explained, “I lived a very happy life until I saw a peacock which has many colors.”
The crow then visited the peacock in the zoo and saw that hundreds of people had gathered to see him. After people had left, the crow came to the peacock. “Dear peacock,” the crow said, “you are so beautiful. Every day thousands of people come to see you. When people see me, they immediately shoo me away. I think you are the happiest bird on the planet.”
The peacock replied, “I always thought that I was the most beautiful bird on the planet. But I am trapped (困住) in the zoo. I have examined the zoo very carefully, and I realize that the crow is the only bird not kept in a cage. So for the past few days, I have been thinking that if I were a crow, I could happily travel everywhere.”
That’s our problem too. We do not value what we have. This all leads to the cycle of unhappiness. There will always be someone who has more or less than you have. A person who is satisfied with what he has is the happiest person in the world.

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. 36
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. 37
38 Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers or sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. 39 In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck.
For shy people it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. 40 They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget-if you are shy, you are not the only one.
