2、    Research shows people have a tendency to seek out information during uncertain times — it’s a natural coping mechanism (机制). But is continuous information-seeking on social media, sometimes called doomscrolling (末日刷刷刷), helpful during a pandemic, or any time?
Research on the effects of bad news on mood suggests exposure to negative COVID news is likely to be dangerous to our emotional well being. For instance, one study conducted in March 2020 involving more than 6,000 Americans found that the more time participants spent consuming COVID news in a day, the unhappier they felt.
These findings are striking but leave a few key questions unanswered. Does doomscrolling make people unhappy, or are unhappy people just more likely to doomscroll? How much time spent doomscrolling is a problem? And what would happen if, instead of doomscrolling, we were “ kindness scrolling ” — reading about humanity’s positive responses to a global crisis?
To find out answers to these questions, researchers conducted a study where they showed hundreds of people real-world content on either Twitter or YouTube for two to four minutes. The Twitter feeds and YouTube videos featured either general news about the COVID, or news about kindness during COVID. Researchers then measured these participants’ moods using a questionnaire, and compared their moods with participants who did not engage with any content at all.
People who were shown general COVID-related news experienced lower moods than people who were shown nothing at all. Meanwhile, people who were shown COVID news stories involving acts of kindness didn’t experience the same decline in mood, but also didn’t gain the boost in mood they’ d predicted. These findings suggest that spending as little as two to four minutes consuming negative news about COVID-19 can have a negative impact on our mood.
Researchers are still working on what people can do to look after themselves, and make time on social media more pleasurable.

3、    It’s a simple yet effective message that appeals, and leads to a satisfying way of motivating us to promote environmentalism in our own way.
Born in Nairobi, Lesein Mutunkei is in his late teens, and his Trees4Goals is the means with which he intends to make the world greener. It unites two of his self-declared passions in life: love of the outdoors, with his love of football. Lesein enjoyed walking in the forest, but recognized his country was experiencing a serious loss of tree coverage. Between 2001 and 2020, Kenya lost an estimated 11% of trees, releasing as many as 176 million tons of CO2.
In a blog post for WWF Kenya, Lesein revealed that, once he started the Trees4Goals initiative, he originally planned to plant one tree per goal. By 2020, he wanted to take his efforts even further. What started as one tree planted per goal mushroomed into 11 trees planted per goal. Explaining the reasoning behind expanding the tree-planting, he said, “It represents team effort in football and the contribution by my team. I have managed to hit the 1, 000th tree milestone in the last two years.”
While it’s something of an own goal to destroy the forests and jungles providing enormous biodiversity, innovative initiatives like Trees4Goals are an assured way to score an environmentalist hat-trick. Football is popular. It cuts through cultural barriers regardless of the country it is played in. By increasing the trees planted per goal, with more such initiatives springing up, even more will be grown.
Like a seed, best ideas start small and change into something that can become far larger than anticipated. While Lesein continues planting 11 trees per goal, Kenyan government is aiming to ensure the planting of 1. 8 billion trees to reach 10% forest coverage. The science behind is clear: if 900 million hectares are devoted to half a trillion trees, the world can offset(抵消)half of all carbon released since 1960.
1.What gave Lesein the idea of launching the project?
A.Release of too much CO2. B.Dream of motivating others.
C.Passion for sports and nature. D.Habit of exercising in the woods.
2.What did Lesein do in 2020?
A.He created a blog for WWF. B.He multiplied his commitment.
C.He planted one tree for each goal. D.He extended his work to other teams.
3.What do the underlined words “own goal” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Aim that is intended to achieve. B.Action that harms one’s own interests.
C.Pursuit toward which effort is directed. D.Goal that is scored for the opposing team.
4.What can we learn from Lesein’s story?
A.United, we win. B.No pains, no gains.
C.Love me, love my dog. D.Small deeds, big difference.
4、    Ice-coated vines (葡萄藤) stretched across hillsides around Chablis, France, as the region woke Monday to the temperature of -5℃. Fruit growers are worried that the frost will kill off large numbers of early buds (花蕾) and disturb the whole growing season.
The frost is particularly disturbing after a similar phenomenon hit French vineyards last year, leading to some 2 billion euros in losses. Scientists later found that the damaging 2021 frost was made more likely by climate change.
Some growers tried to warm the vines with electrical lines, or set up special watering systems, or sprayed (洒) the buds with water to protect them from frost. The water creates a thin layer of ice that ensures the buds’ temperature remains around freezing point but does not drop much lower.
Daniel Defaix, whose vineyard has been producing wine for 400 years and lived through many climate disasters, calls what’s happening now “a very, very serious frost.” He placed candles on the soil to protect about five hectares of his most valuable grapes, but had to leave the remaining 25 hectares to face the forces of nature. At a cost of 10 euros per candle, and 600 candles per hectare, it was too costly to save the rest of the grapes.
The 2021 April frost led to what French government officials described as “probably the greatest agricultural disaster of the beginning of the 21st century.” The pattern was similar: an intense April 6 – 8 frost after a lengthy warm period in March.
The researchers concluded that the warming caused by humans had coaxed the plants so that they exposed their young leaves earlier than usual, before a burst of Arctic cold reached Europe in April.
1.What did Daniel Defaix do to protect his vines?
A.Heat the vines with electrical lines. B.Spray the buds with water.
C.Set up special watering systems. D.Warm the vines with candles.
2.What can we infer from the text?
A.Growers can save most of their crops. B.The 2022 frost is the worst in history.
C.Humans are to blame for the damage. D.The weather last March was normal.
3.What does the underlined word “coaxed” in the last paragraph mean?
    A.Protected. B.Dried. C.Tricked. D.Delayed.
4.Which is the best title of the text?
A.Causes of Early Budding. B.Late Frost Threatens Vine Crops.
C.Creative Ways to Save Vines. D.Global Warming Brings Extreme Weather.

根据第二段“It unites two of his self-declared passions in life: love of the outdoors, with his love of football.(它将他生活中自诩的两种激情结合在一起:对户外的热爱和对足球的热爱)”可知,正是对于足球和户外的热爱,才使他开创了这个项目。故选 C。
根据第三段“By 2020, he wanted to take his efforts even further. What started as one tree planted per goal mushroomed into 11 trees planted per goal.(到 2020 年,他想进一步努力。一开始,每个目标只种一棵树,现在变成了每个目标种 11 棵树)”可知,他加大了自己的投入。故选B。
    3.词句猜测题。根据划线单词下文“to destroy the forests and jungles providing enormous biodiversity(破坏提供大量生物多样性的森林和丛林)”和常识可知,破坏森林和丛林的行为是对自己不好的行为。选项 B“Action that harms one’s own interests.(损害自身利益的行为)”与“own goal(乌龙球)”意思相一致。故选 B。
根据最后一段“Like a seed, best ideas start small and change into something that can become far larger than anticipated.(就像一粒种子,最好的想法从小事开始,然后变成比预期更大的事情)”可推断,文章主要表达的是从小事做起,往往能带来大的影响。选项 A“United, we win (团结,我们就会赢)”;选项 B“No pains, no gains (不劳则无获)”;选项 C“Love me, love my dog. (爱屋及乌)”;选项 D“Small deeds, big difference (小事成就大事)”。故选 D。
    4、答案:1.D; 2.C; 3.C; 4.B
解析:1.细节理解题。根据第四段“He placed candles on the soil to protect about five hectares of his most valuable grapes, but had to leave the remaining 25 hectares to face the forces of nature.(他在土壤上放了蜡烛,以保护大约 5 公顷他最珍贵的葡萄,但不得不留下剩余的 25 公顷面对大自然的力量)”可知,Daniel Defaix 是用蜡烛来温暖他的葡萄藤的。故选 D 项。
根据最后一段“The researchers concluded that the warming caused by humans had coaxed the plants so that they exposed their young leaves earlier than usual, before a burst of Arctic cold reached Europe in April.(研究人员得出的结论是,人类引起的气候变暖诱导这些植物比往常更早地露出了嫩叶,早于 4 月份北极的寒冷侵袭欧洲之前)”可知,是人类造成的气候变暧对植物产生了影响,所以这些损害应该由人类负责。故选 C 项。
根据下文“so that they exposed their young leaves earlier than usual, before a burst of Arctic cold reached Europe in April.(因此它们比往常更早地露出了嫩叶,早于 4 月份北极的寒冷侵袭欧洲之前)”可知,这些植物误以为已经到了温暖时节,可是后来寒冷又来了,所以说是人类造成的变暖诱导了这些植物。
根据第一段“Ice-coated vines (葡萄藤) stretched across hillsides around Chablis, France, as the region woke Monday to the temperature of -5℃. Fruit growers are worried that the frost will kill off large numbers of early buds (花蕾) and disturb the whole growing season.( 冰覆盖的葡萄藤横跨法国查布利斯周围的山坡,该地区周一的温度为-5℃。
【1题详解】空格前说“You will see many people standing around the tables.(你会看到很多人围着桌子站着)”,空格后说“Once there is the slightest indication that the customers are leaving their table, you will see a few people diving for it.(一旦有顾客离开餐桌的微小迹象,你就会看到一些人去抢)”。 F 选项“They will be on the watch for a table most likely to be empty.(他们会密切注意哪张桌子很可能是空的)”能够承上启下,符合语境,故选 F。
【2题详解】空格后说“You next have to get the attention of the busy waiters rushing about to attend to the customers.(接下来,你必须引起忙碌的服务员的注意,他们忙着为顾客服务)”,空格处应说占到桌子以后还有事情,D 选项“But having found a place to sit is not the end of the wait.(但找到一个坐的地方并不是等待的结束)”说明了占到桌子以后还要继续等待,因此 D 选项承上启下,符合语境,故选 D。
