If you want to know how to be a good listener, read on to get started.  Place yourself in other people’s shoes.  It’s easy to only consider the impact of the other person’s “telling” on you. But you must open out and look at the problems from the other persons view. 2  Avoid comparing the person’s experiences to your own. You may think that the best thing you can do to really listen is to compare the person’s experiences to your own. But this type of thinking actually makes the person feel like youre not really listening at all. 3 That means that youre focusing more on yourself than on the persons situation.   4 Some people think that, when theyre listening, they should find a quick and easy solution to the persons problem. According to the research, it is totally wrong to do so. Instead focus on absorbing everything the person is saying to you. Only after that can you really try to help.  Know what not to do. Knowing what to avoid when you’re trying to be a good listener can be almost as helpful as knowing what to do. If you want the speaker to take you seriously youd better not interrupt in the middle of a point. 5 Make eye contact with the person so that he or she realizes that you are listening with interest.  A. Don’t try to help immediately. B. Avoid saying “I” or “me” a lot. C. Try to solve the person’s problem quickly. D. Don’t try to change the subject even if it’s a little uncomfortable. E. If so, you would see your way through the problems much faster. F. Therefore,  you’d better listen to what the person is saying carefully. G. It enriches your understanding and expands your capacity for empathy (共情). Whether it’s a birthday or a wedding, we enjoy having a reason to relax and have a good time. This is especially true for festivals that welcome spring and summer. Here are some celebrations you may not know about. Carabao is a buffalo(水牛) found in the Philippines, and the Carabao Festival is a day of dancing and revelry(狂欢)in May that celebrates the strong animal that plays such an important role in Filipinos farming economy. The animals are cleaned before a parade in which 20 or more of them—many decorated with paint and colorful ribbons—walked through the streets. Coopers Hill is a steep, grassy knoll (小山) near Gloucester, England, which is longer than a football field. Cooper’s Hill is a late May event in which participants race one another to beat a nine-pound cheese round to the bottom of the hill. The event attracts lots of contestants but it is harder than it sounds. Lots of contestants bite the dust before they reach the finish line. The winner gets the cheese.
The Boryeong Mud Festival takes place each summer near Seoul, South Korea. Tons of mud is trucked from the Boryeong mud flats to a beach area near the event. People participate in lots of activities, including a mud pool, mud skiing and mudslides. By the time the celebration is over, anyone coated in soft or dried mud can take a short walk to the beach for a quick bath. La Tomatina is an organized tomato fight that takes place in Bunol, Spain, every August. The festival’s origins are unclear, but that hasn’t lessened anyone’s enthusiasm. The battle lasts for about an hour, and participants have to throw squashed(挤烂的) tomatoes to reduce the risk of injury. After the fight, both the people and the streets are covered with tomato guts. Fire trucks then begin the difficult task of washing everything. 1. In which celebration can people compete with each other? A. The Carabao Festival.              B. Cooper’s Hill Cheese-rolling Festival. C. The Boryeong Mud Festival.        D. La Tomatina Festival. 2. When will you go if you want to participate in La Tomatina? A. In May.    B. In March.    C. In July.   D. In August. 3. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. An unforgettable celebration.                      B. Exciting activities. C.
