Ask just about any 12-year-old what their favorite time of the day is and you'll get a resounding answer: lunch! But for Alejandro Buxton, it's a bit different. He can't wait to get home to dive into his candle–making business. Alejandro has a goal of being a bright light in the world.
It all started when Alejandro discovered that commercial candles gave his mom headaches. He figured there must be a way to make an all-natural candle that was safe. So he dug into the world of wax(蜡) and found a soy-based wax that is chemical-free. He also found natural oils to add scent(香味), and Smell of Love Candles was born.
Alejandro sells his candles at local fairs and to his neighbors. Then his online orders began picking up. In the fall of 2022, he started seventh grade—and opened his first retail store at Tysons Corner Center, a regional mall outside Washington, D.C. As his candles become a much bigger operation, he is always experimenting with new scents like Donut Kill My Vibe, the perfect after-school scent that gets you in the mood for a snack.
Alejandro started his business to build his college fund. But running a business is about more than making money for him. He sets aside a portion of the profit to give back to the community. Some of the money supports the local homeless shelter, and some goes into a scholarship fund for kids who need a little help with college.
His mother, Patricia, is impressed with her son and loves to spend time with him as his business grows. She says it has strengthened their bond to be together and see how his mind works, adding, "It's been really inspiring."
Alejandro has big goals and an even bigger heart. With all the problems that seem to rob many of us of the motivation to move forward, Alejandro has chosen to focus on a solution that works, not only for him, but as an inspiration to others, no matter their age.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are widely considered a strong weapon in efforts against global warming. But are they like what people believe? The Radiant Energy Group (REG) stated effects of EVs vary with countries. In some nations, EVs lead to the release of more carbon gases than gasoline cars. The group reckoned gas emissions(释放) caused by a gasoline vehicle and from charging an EV. Countries where charging an EV is cleaner than driving a gasoline-powered car use a lot of nuclear or solar power.
Sales of electric cars are rising the fastest in Europe. Data from REG suggests EVs in Poland actually create more carbon emissions because their electrical systems depend so much on coal. In other European countries, however, EVs result in fewer emissions. The countries with the biggest carbon gas reduction use much clean power. The first was Switzerland at 100 percent carbon reductions over gasoline vehicles.
Germany and Spain create lots of electricity from the sun and wind. But the sun and wind don't add to a country's electrical system equally throughout the day. For this reason, carbon emissions saved by driving an EV aren't fixed. Charging in the afternoon, when there's more sun and wind, saves 16 to 18 percent more carbon than at night when electrical systems are more likely to be using gas or coal.
The gap in emissions between electric and gasoline-powered vehicles has narrowed in recent years. In Europe, carmakers have been required to meet EU CO2 emissions of performance standards. They've made their gasoline engines more sufficient. As a result, carbon emissions of new gasoline-powered cars in Europe have fallen an average of 25 percent in the past years. But EV sales in Europe are backed by government spending and rules against new gasoline engine cars after 2035. Major automakers have set targets to sell mainly EVs in Europe in the coming years.
8、What does the underlined word "reckoned" mean in paragraph 1?
A. Increased. B. Calculated. C. Banned. D. Prevented.
9、What affects carbon emissions of EVs according to paragraph 3?
A. The country where they're made. B. Facilities producing clean power.
C. The time they are being charged. D. Technology used by electrical systems.
10、What causes sales of EVs to rise quickly in Europe?
A. Support of official policies. B. Concern about global warming.
C. Standards of gasoline cars. D. Advertisements from carmakers.
11、Which can be the best title for the text?
A. What Benefits Do EVs Bring?
B. Will EVs Replace Gasoline Cars in Europe?
C. How Do EVs Affect Carbon Emissions?
D. Do Electric Cars Really Help the Environment?
Is my article mid or valid? If you can answer this question, you already are accustomed to what we term “algo speak.” As more and more online users join social media platforms such as TikTok(抖音), algospeak continues to grow. But what is it, what do these words mean?
Algospeak is a coded language or slang(俚语) used online. For some communities it is the only way to talk safely about sensitive subjects. Due to the rise of algorithmic censorship(算法筛查) in media, algospeak developed as a way to prevent robots from deleting their videos and messages. Users had to get creative to avoid deletion. This means that as long as there is censorship, there will be a new language to avoid it.
Further, new slang created on social media platforms fits itself into everyday life. Even if you are not writing a message on TikTok, you may have caught yourself using phrases from the app in your daily life. This connection between people all over the globe allows for shared vocabulary. It also has the potential to completely change the way we as English speakers speak. Here is some new slang popularized by TikTok.
Bussin'(adj.)—something is really good, usually referring to food
Mid (adj.)—ordinary, not good or bad
Sheesh (ex.)—response either meaning disbelief or surprise, can be positive or negative
Valid (adj.)—something very good or meets a very high standard; a respectable opinion
No one would have suspected artificial intelligence(AI) would be the catalyst(催化剂) for change but it is. The combination of not only censorship but also high connectivity birthed a new language. Some older generations can't even understand what the youngest generation says because of the lack of exposure to the new language. The gap between English before social media and English as it is now is giant, and it continues to grow.
So, what should we expect for the future? Will censorship loosen or will the English language continue to evolve from digital media? Time can only tell.
12、What contributed to the emergence of algospeak?
A. The need for netizens to escape censorship.
B. The desire for a shared vocabulary around the world.
C. The authority's demand for creating a new language.
D. The social media's intention to catch public attention.
13、What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. AI needs catalyst to develop.
B. Social media birthed a new language.
C. Algospeak may cause communication obstacles.
D. Strict censorship is a barrier to interpersonal relationships.
14、What is the author's attitude towards the future of algospeak?
A. Expectant. B. Intolerant. C.Skeptical. D. Unclear.
15、What can we infer about algospeak?
A. It offers a new outlook on life. B. Its evolution is associated with AI.
C. It has reshaped the digital media. D. It has won popularity among all ages.
